2nd visit with some Thai Hoteliers and needed a bit of a wow factor, so once again 1821 delivered! Great food, superb service and just a great evening. My clients loved it and one of them was a non-lamb fan, but left the restaurant fully converted. Thanks 1821, will be back and have since recommended it for my colleagues for similar occasions
Our booking was at 6:15pm - we had not finished our entree when our main course was unceremoniously dumped on the table. Despite protests, our plates were cleared away and we were left with the main course. It was obvious that they wanted us out of the place as soon as possible for the next seating. The toilets are a store room - go at your peril.
We really enjoyed the shared plates that we tried and there was sufficient food to share. The tables were very close together so it's not a place for a romantic dinner and the noise level was high. We thought that being charged $5 per person for still water was high. Wasn't it just water out of the tap? There was also a credit card surcharge already added onto the bill (when we wanted to pay cash) Staff were helpful and didn't mind splitting the bill. All in all we enjoyed a very pleasant evening.
Food was amazing.
When I first got there, no one acknowledged me for about 10 minutes, wasn't very busy.
I also asked for a high chair was told there were none, but saw another family with a high chair for their baby.
Otherwise, good place, good food, would recommend.
Fabulous food but one major disappointment was that we ordered two mains and made it very clear to server that one couple in our party was having the lamb and the other couple was having the chicken. Despite this the lamb dish was finished, and we had waited until it started to get cold, before the chicken dish even appeared - we asked several times and were just told it was coming. So, apart from starters, we didn't get to eat together which really took the shine off a special celebration evening.
Whilst I recognise the food was outstanding and good value, the issue we had was we ordered a bottle of red and a bottle of white from the wine list. The red came and we ordered a merlot, the waitress explained that the bottle she had wasn't a merlot and said it had been mis printed on the wine list, the white was nowhere to be seen. After I requested the white as we were eating our entrées ($110 per bottle), someone eventually came up and said that bottle was no longer on the list. I selected a second bottle ($120 per bottle) at which stage it took them 10 minutes to come to me and say they had run out of that wine. They then offered me a $65 complimentary, which I declined and ordered a second bottle of red($140 per bottle) We had some complimentary desert and the ordered a 'cleanser' - an Ouzo, an espresso martini and a Canadian club and dry. After 20 minutes nothing had arrived and the waitress came back and said the drinks had been forgotten and she would order them again, we decided not to bother, paid our bill and left. The waitress did explain she had been in Australia for four days and was obviously new to the scene, it would have been better if the Maitre D had looked after her and her customers better, but that wasn't to be. Good food is one part of an essential lunch, but that can go wrong every now and then due to quality etc, but service from my experience is very hard to get wrong when it relies on people and their skills.
Unfortunately I wouldn't rush back for this experience.
Great venue and fabulous food but everything just seemed to so rushed...little time to review menu...entrees arriving before pre-dinner cocktails, etc!
Obviously, because there are staggered 2 hour dining sessions, table turnover is important but this could be handled just a little better with more coordinated and "paced" service.
That said, we will be giving it one more try purely on the strength of the food alone...
Food is sensational. The lamb shoulder is to die for.
Beware the tables and chairs at the back of the restaurant near the kitchen as they are raised on a weird platform. I face planted when getting off my chair to leave as did another guy at the table next to me. If it had have been someone elderly it may not have ended well. My knee is still sore.
Just seemed ridiculous and dangerous to have them set up that way.
It was an awful and unsettling end to an otherwise fabulous lunch.
very disappointing being told @ 7:45pm can not be served even a coffee, to leave. This place is not able to accomodate fast enough to serve meal and sweets. We were there 6:10pm so 10min late but been to many places, can easily accomodate 3 course meal & leave by 8:15pm. Surely having a coffee can't take 15-20min. When we asked it is 7:45pm & coffee should not take that long was told sorry have to leave. Very poor. same thing happened to my husband week before there @6pm.NEVER AGAIN
The food was amazing. BUT the service was very disappointing. We had a booking for 8pm and were not seated until just before 9pm.
The menu wasn't explained as being designed to share. We only discovered this after only one diner received their main first and the rest of us had to wait at least 5 minutes to receive ours.
The wait staff were not friendly and they were bickering amongst each other in full view of diners.
Very disappointing experience.
We had a wonderful night but I was surprisingly unimpressed with the service. Our waiter was pleasant enough but not very experienced, had no knowledge of the Greek wines.
The food is modern Greek, quite expensive for the portion size, tasty and pretty. We had 2 small, 4 medium and 3 large dishes, 2 delicious desserts (the highlight)for 5 of us and didn't feel full.
Service was terrible. Our waiters didn't know much about the Greek wines that we asked about, they weren't attentive we were flagging or getting up to get them for a wine pour and to order more. Overall, we were disappointed. i had mentioned an allergy (no dairy) in the booking which the waiters were really baffled by and they made us feel as though we were being difficult rather than accommodating client needs. i think when you're paying over $100 a head for dinner, which we did for a table of
The absolute worst greek food that I have tasted and am astonished how they can serve burnt rice in meals that is so hard that your teeth hurt.. octopus that is beyond burnt and then to be charge $5.00 pp for WATER! what an absolute joke and they should be embarrassed. The restaurant has a fantastic fitout and beautiful however its SPOILED with the horrific food and price paid!
Wonderful light and airy restaurant that makes you think of a Greek temple. Service was friendly and reasonably attentive. My girlfriend and I had the $55 per head lunch set menu. We both loved the dips -- especially the eggplant -- and the salad, a slaw with crunchy bits of spice corn was amazing. The sesame haloumi was also very good, although heavy and very filling, as you'd expect. The slow-roasted lamb was melt-in-the-mouth tender and absolutely delicious. Unfortunately, it was too much for us two ladies to finish so had to take the leftovers home, which was no problem at all.
Overall the food was absolutely delicious!
The 2 items on the menu I found to be only ok were the dips; the fava and eggplant dips were a little disappointing in comparison to everything else we enjoyed. They were not very tasty in my opinion.
Dessert was amazing though!
We booked a reservation for a work lunch and decided to go with tasting menu which was 55 per person for the 5 of us. The couple across from us also ordered the same tasting menu as did a couple in the corner of the restaurant easily in view. Both couples got the exact same portions as our group of 5. When one of the women in the group asked the waitress if we were getting any more food our dish for 5 people was the same as for 2 people, she said no, that was all we were getting.
Such a wonderful restaurant, on a short visit to Sydney we ate there twice. First night on a friends recommendation, the second time just because we were keen to return. Service excellent, food delicious and inventive, great ingredients, nice ambience....all in all a lovely night out. Everything we ordered was exceptional and there are more things for us to try on our next visit. We thought reasonable value for money and serves quite generous. Well done 1821.
We were celebrating my husband's birthday and the total experience was fantastic! From the moment we walked in to the restaurant we were struck by the absolutely stunning decor and fit out! We were warmly greeted and nothing was too difficult for the staff. We had the pleasure of chatting with the head chef who took the time to approach us. The sommelier was extremely knowledge and very attuned to our tastes and wine needs. Totally fabulous evening - highly recommend!!
Excellent standard of modern Greek, great for sharing. Lovely ambience - light, classic (love the booths). Great bar for a bite and cocktail. Didn't see upstairs but looks good from below. Only downside (ha) is having to go downstairs for bathroom (a pet peeve) - don't know if there is an option for mobility-limited diners? We'll be back!
