My wife and I have been going to Posillipo in Canterbury for the past seven years, and in that time no other establishment has been able to usurp its preeminence as our favourite restaurant in the city. Any reviewers who complain about the quality of the food (especially the pizzas and the homemade pasta dishes) are most likely not accustomed to authentic Italian cuisine. As a man of Italian descent (and with the whole-hearted agreement with my genuine Italian friends in Canterbury), I maintain that Posillipo offers the best, most authentic Italian food in the area. As is often the case with real Italian restaurants, the menu is also very reasonably priced. The staff is superb, always making my wife and I feel like honoured guests, attentively seeing to our needs, and never making us feel in any way rushed. The restaurant is conveniently located in the centre of town, close to both the cathedral and the Marlowe Theatre. In short, I cannot recommend this establishment enough, and I always find it difficult to understand why anyone would pass up Posillipo for one of the mediocre (at best) pseudo-Italian chains that populate the High Street.
We've lived in Canterbury for 11 years and when we fancy Italian always go for one of the obvious large chain restaurants, we didn't know about posillipo until a colleague at work recommended it. We're so glad she did, the atmosphere is great, so was the food, the service was perfect, attentive but without being in your face and the wine was wonderful. The perfect place to go before going to the Marlowe, no rushing or bringing your main when you're still enjoying starters, as experienced in the well known restaurants. A visit to Posillipo was the perfect start to a great evening. There's only one place we'll be going when we fancy Italian in future.
We were very impressed with the quality of the food here and at such a bargain price. We couldn't work out why they weren't over run with customers! They should be! Highly recommend!
Have visited twice now since our daughter has been at University in Canterbury. Food is absolutely fantastic, well presented and good quality. Service is attentive and friendly. Most recent visit was with family for Mothers Day and once again everything was superb.
This was our 2nd evening meal at Position. It was pre-theatre and so we were eating an early supper at about 5.00. Even at this time the atmosphere was good.
The staff were charming, attentive but not intrusive but what we particularly like is the menu which allows you to eat from basic pizza to moules or scallops and they always have a specials board of delicious seafood dishes. Swordfish was particularly good. We will be back!
Four of us came here for dinner on New Years Eve to celebrate mine and my partner's anniversary. We've been to the restaurant plenty of times so knew it was a good place to visit. The food was lovely as usual but the service wasn't as good as before. My friend waited half an hour for another glass of water after having asked for one & we waited quite a while to get the bill and be given the dessert menu. It was very busy however. All in all, a good choice though.
Great service - excellent craft beer - good food in a nice informal setting. Well recommended.
It was a quite huge pizza and a nice risotto.
We enjoyed our dinner.
Fairly ordinary Italian fare , but convenient for pre theatre meal
We ordered from the Canterbury Festival menu - why do you have to order veg as an extra! The chicken escalopes were ordinary, but all else was lovely
Food excellent as always, would always recommend and will keep going back.
I went to Posillipo as a student at UKC around 4 years ago. I remember it fondly. I went back this weekend for the first time since graduating and the restaurant didn't disappoint. There was an excellent selection of food. Our pizza bread starters were grgeous and my seafood pizza was spectacular; my boyfriends pasta was equally divine. The servie was attentive without getting in your way, and the atmosphere is cosy. I thoroughly recommend.
The location of the restaurant is great, a five minute walk from Canterbury Cathedral. The food was delicious, we ordered lamb, mixed fish platter and mixed grill with mushrooms and spinach and enjoyed it all. The children had Pizza and Pasta from the set children menu - along with garlic bread starter and a scoop of ice cream for dessert - and made a clean plate - high praise indeed. The service was fine as was the ambience. Prices are reasonable. I would return and recommend this restaurant.
Ate here the night before my daughters graduation, and wanted somewhere with ambience and good food and we weren't disappointed. Relaxed atmosphere with helpful and knowledgeable staff, and we weren't rushed either. A varied menu, something to suit all in our party. Good food and a decent wine list, reasonably priced.
Went there to celebrate my graduation, when we received our food, most of our dishes felt like they were missing something. Only once we got home and had another look at the menu, we noticed our meals all had some missing components.
Annoyed that we paid full price for incomplete meals
My boyfriend and I came here for a meal in the evening after a long day walking around. Food was very tasty and managed to sit outside which was nice as the weather was still warm. It was quite busy and after our mains had been taken away we were waiting approximately 20 -25 minutes for anyone to bring over a dessert menu and by then we had passed it and just asked for the bill. It was a little bit of a shame but didn't effect the overall evening.
We went there pre theatre and had a lovely meal - we both had yummy proper traditional thin pizzas.
We sat in the window so could see people dining outside and the world going by.
We got chatting to the people on the next table - so very friendly and informal place to eat Italian food.
Close to centre of Canterbury - so very convenient for shopping or the theatre.
We ordered from specials board
Pasta with scallops prawn s in a lemon sauce
we were dissapointed with the meal,as 2 prawns in dish and 5 tiny scallops.
to much pasta but at least this was fresh tasting.
I would say it was not very flavoursome at al,l a hint of lemon.
It was over priced at £15.95 a dish. Wine we ordered. tasted cheap not great.
So we will not return to this restaurant .
Lovely Italian food and wine sat just outside the cathedral. All for great value too.
Lovely food and great friendly service. Quiet so I wouldnt suggest taking children and the stairs to the toilet are a little precarious
It was our first time dining here, nothing was too much trouble, we had booked online and I wanted our table to be a little more special then usual as it was a special night for my husband and I, staff were very friendly and the food was amazing! We would definitely come back again!
A lovely place. Delicious food, great value for Canterbury. A nice position at the back of the City wall. Staff very nice
We spent a night in Canterbury so needed to decide where to eat. Online Posillipo looked and sounded good, but in reality this was different. The interior was rather old and cramped and the food offer, which was quite extensive, proved to be disappointing. It has taken a long time to get good pizzas in the UK and so we expect this standard now... Posillipo did not fulfil the promise particularly as the dough could have been better. The staff were attentive and concerned when we questioned this.
Having taken this from other reviewers recommendations I was not disappointed; what a little gem. Fabulous authentic fresh Italan food with a good varied menu and daily specials. All of our food was delicious, fresh and beautifully presented. The staff were attentive and professional . The wine list was also good without being overpriced. I would certainly recommend and return and thank the restaurant for a surprisingly truly lovely experience.
Very friendly staff! Food was delicious and great value for money! I will definitely be returning!
The swordfish was perfectly cooked as was the seafood spaghetti. My starter of rocket, Parma ham and parmesan shavings was the perfect appetiser and my husband enjoyed his seafood salad too. We don't eat desert but the coffee was good.
We had a great evening. Varied choice of authentic Italian food. The menu catered for everyone. Very helpful and attentive staff. Whole atmosphere was relaxing and friendly .
Great lunch for Mothers day that the (teenage) children enjoyed too
Four of us recently had lunch at Posillipo on Mothers day. The restaurant was very busy because of the special occasion so we had to wait a bit for our food to arrive , but that was fine as when the food arrived it was very good . The menu is very varied and offers lots of choices for different tastes and the staff were very pleasant . Our only gripe is that we were seated at a table that had a slope in the ceiling so had restricted height . Mum sat there because she is tiny and was fine but anyone tall would have a problem I think.
Overall we were very pleased with our experience at Posillipo and would definitely eat there again .
We needed a good, informal meal in central Canterbury. Picked this from its reviews and were not disappointed at all - welcoming attentive service, lovely food and good value
On a rainy Saturday night at 7.0pm, Osteria Posillipo Pizzera, Canterbury was very busy - definitely a good sign. The four of us enjoyed a tasty, well presented meal - a clear step-up from the average 'Italian'. There was no attempt to 'move us on' and we did a good deal of talking in the 3½ hours we were there. Do be warned - portions are large! This was a second visit and we will be returning.
Osteria Posillipo Pizzeria offers great food, attentive and friendly service, and a good atmosphere. We really enjoyed our dinning experience and recommend the restaurant.
I normally been to the Broadstairs restaurant but never to the Canterbury branch, I have to say it is every bit as good as what I used to back in Broadstairs great food friendly team of people thanks to Mario
Visited Osteria Posillipo in Canterbury post-theatre. Nearly empty on a very wet night. Compared with the likes of Prezzo the pasta is much more authentic and served in very generous portions. Excellent value. Preferable to anything on Canterbury's High Street.
The Osteria Posipillo Pizzeria is a pleasant modern Italian restaurant in the middle of Canterbury serving uncomplicated but fresh and tasty Italian food at reasonable prices and with friendly and very efficient service.
The Osteria Posillipo Pizzeria restaurant in Canterbury is a lovely Italian restaurant with a local feel. The food was excellent - we had three courses very greedy!) and enjoyed everything. Highlights were the foccacia and pizza from their wood oven, also the mixed fish dish was gorgeous. The portions are very generous, especially starters, so be warned! The service was good, friendly and helpful. Will go again and recommend it to others.
Visited Posillipo, Canterbury. As usual we had a lovely meal in what we feel is the best Italian restaurant in Canterbury. Seafood bruschetta (special) and linguine ai gamberoni (be prepared to deconstruct the enormous prawns) were delicious. Timamisu was gorgeous. One gripe: Stop putting aerosol cream on the deserts, they don't need it (particularly panna cotta)!
The lunch I had at Osteria Posillipo in Canterbury was very good. The funghi risotto was very good. As the restaraunt is slightly out of the way it was empty but is well worth finding
The overall standard of food and service at Osteria Posillipo Pizzeria in Canterbury was very good. The starters and main courses were extremely tasty (especially the sauteed potatoes -yum!) It was however let down by two things: the first being the hot chocolate fondant, which was essentially just a reheated chocolate sponge. Don't order this if you are expecting an oozing chocolate fondant. The second thing was that we had to wait so long for our bill - only getting our coats on seemed to work
The food at Osteria Posillipo in Canterbury is delicious and the staff are attentive. Situated behid the cathedral it is not in the main part of the city but well worth discovering.
