The kitchen aims to cook very good produce, as simply as possible but with imagination and plenty of care. The menu is driven by what arrives from our suppliers each day.
Our wine list is international and offers roughly three quarters of our wines by the glass
What Insiders Are Saying
Portland is a great restaurant in the vein of so many in London that focus on simple ingredients and offer a reasonably priced tasting menu.
Great service, they placed a birthday card on our table, since it was my wife’s birthday. The food was one of the best of our trip.
Interesting food, well prepared. Friendly approachable service.
Best meal there ever
Fabulous and imaginative cuisine, very friendly and good service. Only 2 problems - noise level is too high and air conditioning too cold.
Very sorry to hear that Coline. We do try and maintain an equilibrium for all our guests, but can only apologise wholeheartedly if it affected your meal with us. I will make a note to always sit you in the quietest possible section in future. Thank you very much for your kind words on the food & service We look forward to seeing you again soon Patrick
We loved it, as always......it was a brilliant place to take an Australian friend.
I have been going to this restaurant since it opened.. although at the start it used to be incredibly difficult to get a table..
The food remains at the very high standard that it set for itself.. and quickly gained the reputation of being, since it opened..
Snacks are so good.. why don't more restaurants do this.. I guess they do in the form of amusebouches.. we had the chicken skin, the langoustine toasts and the gouda financier were delicious..
Starters kept the high standards and we had asparagus and chicken tartlet and some awesome gnochi with goats curd lard and courgettes.. I loved my main course.. smoked ricotta with some sort of pasta and the suckling pig was very tasty.. served in a rather innotive manner..
Desserts were a triumph with gariguette straweberries with a mascapone icecream.. just wonderful..
They have a tremendous selection of wines by the glass and i had a sicilian white.. a cracking St Romain.. which had beautiful rich nose and a fantastic long finish.. and I even snuck in an auslese to accompany the strawberries.
a special word to the service.. it was informative.. efficient.. friendly and fun..
thank goodness it's easier to get a table now.. FABULOUS
We both went for the tasting menu with wines. Overall probably one if the best tasting menus we have ever had. The food was excellent with the right balance between light but incredibly complex flavours.
Portion sizes all good.
The wines were an excellent pairing.
Good value for Michelin tasting in London.
Great food, amazing wine pairing and good service. Great night!
We tried a few months ago and thought the restaurent was great we revisted this week to see if it was as good as we thought it definitely was . service thats friendly, efficient and knowledgeable, a stunning taster menu, all courses good. Wine tasting menu was a real adventure.
I always enjoy my meals at Portland Restaurant on this occasion we tried the Pithivier of Duck & Pigeon, Hispi Cabbage, Morels & Truffle Jus and the Gloucester Old Spot Suckling Pig, Roasted Alliums & Baby Beetroots as mains. Thoroughly enjoyable! The starter to mention in particular is the Cured Mackerel, Baby Artichokes, Broad Beans & Old Winchester.
Dining here is always pleasurable, and this time was my first luncheon, a little more "manic" for the staff unlike dining at dinner.
First rate. Nothing amiss. Highly recommended.
Friendly, approachable restaurant (great for a date night!). The food and service were on point. Awesome wine list.. Happy days!
My husband and I had a fantastic experience at Portland. Fabulous food and the wine pairing was tasty and interesting. Great service. Will be visiting again!
Such a good restaurant. Such variety of flavours and a really calm and pleasing atmosphere. One of my faves in London.
From the moment we walked in we felt welcome and special. Staff were very attentive and the food was delicious. Bravo
Super helpful and accommodating
This is an excellent restaurant. Food - extraordinary. Considered, produced with exceptional craft. A rush of flavour taste and freshness. Service - Welcoming, intimate, thoughtful. Ambience - the place is simple, uncluttered, restrained. The idea being perhaps to let the food and service take centre stage. Tip - arrive earlier than your guest to give you time to drift through the beautifully presented wine list. Fascinating even if you don’t drink at lunchtimes. Have a lovely time if you go. My new office is 200m up the road. I couldn’t be happier. W
I’ve written really enthusiastically about Portland in the past, so this will be brief!
Another lovely evening - really a pleasure being here again. Very good food and such relaxing and pleasing service.
Thanks to all at Portland once more.
Outstanding dining experience. I dined at Portland with a friend who visited from abroad on a Monday night. All seats were filled, and the restaurant had a lively, but comfortable atmosphere.
I thought the tasting menu was great. Specifically, the "London stracciatella" on the menu was terrific.
My friend did not enjoy one of the dishes, but was given a beautiful alternative dish when she pointed this out to the waiter. The waiter was very attentive all night.
Overall, a great restaurant. I would highly recommend and will definitely be back!
Wonderful restaurant without being fussy. Service was spot on. We tried several items on a la Carte menu from snacks (loved the carrot financiers and laungostine toast) starters (mackerel was delicious and presentation was gorgeous) and mains (sirloin lovely but overpowered by sauce- but delicious nonetheless). Desserts also lovely-pink peppercorn gelato was a standout. One really nice feature was great selection of wines by glass and carafe so pairings are made easy. Thanks also for lovely birthday card and cute recipe (with ingredients).
Al in all super meal and great experience. We’ll return often.
Truly one of the best meals I've had in New York or London in such a long time! Portland is outstanding!
The service was friendly and attentive, food excellent. A superb meal
Their Lunch Menu was excellent value for this class of restaurant. We had one Vegan which we gave virtually no notice about. They were offered choices from the Vegan Tasting menu - which I am told were good. (Did not look so tasty as the main menu!) Would definitely recommend but give notice of Vegans!
Beautiful, elegant and contemporary restaurant with neighbourhood feel and good staff
Went with my father for an early Easter dinner and remained in awe of the quick and professional staff, great food and Michelin restaurant worthy presentation. Definitely a must in Fitzrovia.
Every dish we had was incredible
It’s a balance of all flavors in one dish. It may be salty or plain if you eat each ingredient separate. But when combine, it’s phenomenal!!! Hope this one will earn one extra Michelin Star soon!
Food was absolutely delicious and attention to detail was phenomenal. It is a small, understated and reasonably priced restaurant with outstanding, friendly service and beautiful food. I dined at lunch time to celebrate an upcoming birthday and the hugely attentive waiter noticed the birthday card and brought me a dessert, appropriately dressed with a pretty candle. On leaving, the restaurant gave me a beautifully presented gift box consisting of a house recipe for shortbread with the dry ingredients. It was most unexpected but says it all. An absolute gem.
Exceptional. Service is attentive, but not intrusive. My husband and I had one of the best meals of our lives. You can taste every component of dish. The vegetables really blew us away with a popping freshness. The pithivier was so good we couldn't stop talking about it. Thank you!
main is very sweet and delicious food. but the dessert a little bit bad.
It was my husband's birthday and the Portland tasting menu was perfect. Service is attentive yet relaxed and the food was delicious. They even gave him a lavender biscuit mix to make at home for a birthday present!
Great food, great service, great restaurant.
As always the guys and girls at the Portland put on a special evening
It’s my favourite spot for a business lunch and the evening menu was superb
The tasting menu was the perfect choice to get a bite of all the delicious food they make. Everything was perfectly well presented on arrival by the waitresses and after enjoying every bite my taste buns couldn't complain at all. The proportions every course were well thought through to make sure the overall amount of food was in line with normal dinners.
Giles Coren called this the perfect restaurant he was right!
Food was good but the service and hospitality were lacking.
We went for lunch with friends and three children but there was nothing in the menu or any attempt to cater for them.
Staff also seemed vacant and disinterested in making it a fine dining experience.
From the moment you walk in the door there is a warm welcome. This was our second visit and we were remembered from the first. The service was perfect, attentive without being intrusive. The food was beautiful. We had the tasting menu. The variety of texture, colours and flavours amazing. The wine pairings well chosen and the wines themselves eclectic and interesting. A great restaurant and as a result a wonderful evening.
Food, service and wine was amazing.
Confident and knowledgable staff who made great recommendation. Enjoyed every second in my dining experience at The Portland
Overall experience was excellent. We thought we had booked for 7:00 but had actually booked for 9:00PM. We sat at the counter for first part of dinner and when a table opened, moved there to finish dinner. Staff could not have been more accommodating and both food and wine were great. I'll definitely return.
Wow. Stunning tasting menu, are a broad variety of very seasonal products with specific provenance, each masterfully prepared. The staff is young, enthusiastic and unpretentious, the latter of which can also describe the wine list. Some highlights were pollock poached in a butter topped with squid ink sauce, and charred eel served under thinly sliced picked root veg. Even the petit fours were marvellous - a chocolate truffle with rosemary oil run through it. Hugely enjoyable, I recommend it strongly
