Oscar & Bentleys
We have an interesting selection of vegetarian, gluten & dairy free options available at all times.
Poor welcome despite booking
Poor attention to dietary questions
Vegetable served 15 minutes after main course
Poor choice dessert for dietary requests
Lack of response with questions raised
Lovely food and friendly staff as always. Only 4 stars following feedback from the 9 year old in our party. She didn't like the children's menu reporting, "it's OK if you want something with chips, but I don't." She said she was expecting an option like spaghetti bolognaise. She was tempted by the chilli on the adult menu but settled for the beef carbonade, which she really enjoyed but the portion was far too large. Perhaps a more adventurous children's menu beyond nuggets and chips would allow younger diners to enjoy the fabulous food prepared in this restaurant.
Food was really nice but service was quite poor. We discovered that we had a faulty table after a glass of wine fell over covering me and my 7 year old son. Had to ask for extra napkins and no effort was made to help. Closer inspection showed the table had a loose foot which I pointed out to the waiter who reattached it saying he had already done it that morning. A replacement glass of wine was ordered. When receiving the bill we had been charged fir a small glass of wine. I questioned this and was told that some of it had been drunk. I said that about two mouthfuls and that the waiter already said the table was faulty. It seemed very churlish for them not to just give us the wine for free.
Food was nice and the Australian waitress was really friendly.
Food was nice not amazing expensive for what it was. Female Staff were not great couldn’t get a please Thankyou or smile out of the younger waitress.
Food is lovely and reasonably priced. Excellent for allergies. Staff always friendly and service quick.
Oscar and Bentleys is nice but nothing special. We were in an upstairs room and it was hard to get staff attention unless they were coming up to deliver food or drinks. Felt more like a cafe than a restaurant but maybe the atmosphere is different downstairs
We ate as a family of four. The service was efficient and friendly and the food was very good. The deserts were a little under par but the main courses made up for them. The cocktails were also very nice. The atmosphere is very pleasant but closing the outer door would have prevented a draft everytime someone came in. Overall a couple of minor points but otherwise a great restaurant and I would happily eat here again.
We had yet another delicious meal at Oscar & Bentleys and was thoroughly enjoyed by 3 generations.
Excellent service as always and very reasonably priced.
Easy booking via the internet. Good traditional English food at a reasonable price. Very efficient service in a relaxing atmosphere.
The service was very disappointing as they were clearly keen to get rid of us. We felt pressured to finish up and it was clear they were not pleased that we ordered desert, even though the restaurant was still open.
We simply loved it. 3rd time we visited it. We do not need to worry about any allergies. What a pleasure. The kids were so happy. Will come back for sure. Staff very friendly and helpful.
Steak not rested. When challenged was told they were busy. Not acceptable.
Hi Stephen . I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your steak. However, our front of house manager did assure you that the steak was rested for 5 minutes. As a good will gesture we gave you complimentary desserts. Again, apologies the steak wasn't cooked to your liking. We hope to see you again soon
I have given Oscar and Bentleys 3 stars and I think that's generous.
The food was only average. I was hoping for a innovative Vegan meal but alas that was not to be. Starter was basically a mushroom soup which anyone can do, then onto Lentil cottage pie. Too much potato which made it a bit heavy. My companions were equally only ok about their food. I'm afraid the desserts were flavourless, the cheesecake and was told the espresso was revolting.
The service was again disappointing. We arrive on time at 19.30 but were being asked for our dessert choices before 21.00, immediately after our mains had been cleared away, unnecessarily quick.
All this disappointment was coupled with the restaurant being very noisy, it did have a Christmas party of 10 booked in which didn't help but in that case a choice of an upstairs table should have been offered. Even with the 10, they still insisted on playing the wrong type of music for the restaurant. If the customers are noisy then turn the bloody music off not turn the volume up.
Left after an hour and 40 mins to find somewhere quite to have a chat. I repeat, Disappointing.
I was excited to go to this 100% gluten free cafe - as a celiac, it is a rare treat to have a safe night out eating. I booked a table there prior to traveling to Canterbury. The night we had our table, they also had a large party next to us. We arrived about 15-20 minuted before the large party. I looked at my watch at one point and realized we had been there an hour and had only had the initial drinks and our appetizers had just been delivered to our table. We were never asked if we wanted more drinks, we actually had to refill our own water carafe at the sink. The food was great, it is just a shame that we came on a bad evening. I was so looking forward to having some gluten free treats for dessert, but I opted not to, as I was afraid of how long it would take and my children had gotten beyond tired of sitting there by the point I could have gotten dessert. The waiter was very nice and apologetic about the wait when we went down to pay the bill. The food was great and I loved the place, and it is just fabulous to see a 100% gluten free restaurant, but apparently we chose a bad night for the one experience we got to have there.
Overall good - nice food well cooked and presented . Desserts a bit pricey for choice and quantity . Restaurant very helpful and accommodating before we arrived . Little less upon arrival . Could have been more helpful re our coats and baggage as seated in quite a confined space .
Second time here and food was just as good as before. Great building in nice location.
Very nice place. the service was good and the ambiance of the restaurant was very nice
Lovely gluten-free bistro, so nice to be able to choose anything from the menu! My chicken burger was delicious, & so was the cheesecake!
What a lovely place with great food and staff who went above and beyond to accommodate my pushchair containing a sleeping baby, and to make my active 2.5 year old feel very welcome. One thing I would say is that the colouring pencils need sharpening!! Lovely lunch, great food, great place.
A lovely quirky place with great food and friendly staff.
excellent food, great for all diets and very reasonable for the high standard of their meals. service is quick and friendly. I recommend the chocolate orange tart!
Fab to find a truly Gluten free restaurant in East Kent.
Food was generally good and fairly priced. I splashed out on the steak which said it came ‘pink’. I asked for it to be on the rare side - it came medium rare. Squid rings to share as a starter were good with a nice little salad with lemony dressing (a bit heavy handed in the dressing). My daughter’s burger she declared very good and she also liked the bun - she is not GF, so this was high praise.
Service was mixed. Both members of staff were friendly but the younger woman who brought our main courses was so distracted by the next door table that she didn’t realise that she had put my plate/board only half on the table and it was teetering into my lap as I grabbed it. She never looked back to realise what she had done as she was already talking to our neighbours despite my daughter exclaiming and then laughing as I caught he board. However later on she was so friendly that she made up for that faux pas.
Disappointed that we were told that we wouldn’t be able to return for coffee after the concert we were going to, as no orders would be taken after 9pm. For a Friday night and a returning customer (my daughter was hoping for a pud), this was disappointing.
We will definitely be back. My daughter didn’t feel even slightly aware of the GF stratus of the food and staff were friendly.
Oh, but don’t use their loo as it is right next to their galley prep area and since I could hear their conversation completely I assume that they would also be able to hear.... well, you get the picture.
Lovely all in all best meal I have experienced for a very long time. Staff are lovely, food was beautiful. Will definitely be coming again.
They catered to a large group very well, food was wonderful and the staff were lovely. A great end to a team night out!
Staff friendly polite and welcoming, food excellent and quick service. Cannot wait to go back.
Super food, the battered prawns and fish were amazingly light and delicious, desserts were great and service was excellent.
good choice and very tasty food - all gluten-free so no worries! Portions were generous too.
Nice atmosphere, modern take on local food, an especially good place to eat gluten-free food. Helpful staff
What an amazing place. My husband is a coeliac and to be able to eat a meal in complete confidence without having to worry whether he will eat gluten was brilliant. There was a nice choice on the menu, something for everyone. When we visit my daughter again at university we will be making another reservation.
Superb hospitality offered matched by excellent food. An excellent evening.
Most of the service was great, at times our order didn’t get put through for drinks so we had to wait and re order. The food was good and a varied selection.
This is the best venue I have eaten out at that caters for my gluten issues including a great choice of beer which is the one thing I find hardest to get
We chose Oscar and Bentley's because my brother-in-law needs a gluten- and dairy-free diet. The kitchen is completely gluten-free and where dairy is used the menu makes it clear. This was so refreshing and reassuring, and we will certainly go there again.
Great food, great service- quite small so glad we booked. Would definitely go again if we lived in Canterbury.
We couldn't have felt more welcome and the food was fantastic. Looking forward to our next visit!
Warm and friendly service and ambience , delicious gluten free, vegan choice, great experience. Thank you.
Heel fijne no-nonsence restaurant, heel vriendelijke correcte bediening, voortreffelijk vers eten.
Een aanrader om in Canterbury informeel te tafelen !
Love Oscar and Bentkeys. However really sad that it is no longer open in the evenings on a Tuesday. We had to have pre graduation brunch rather than post graduation dinner as planned. Sadly it will probably be our last visit as we don't have a need to visit Canterbury any more and live 5 hours away.
Food was all very average.
Service was good.
Will probably not return.
