The dining room's lush red leather banquettes and dim, attractive lighting have restored the fizzy thrill of dining in a restaurant - both attractive and cozy - and harken back to a bygone era when a gentleman never left the house without a tie and a lady always had a pair of white gloves in her purse.
Monkey Bar's menu boasts American classics alongside seasonal dishes using sustainable and organic products whenever possible.
An NYC classic--and the prettiest bar in midtown. Highly Recommend!
Wonderful meal in cool setting. Our server Edward was outstanding!
It was good. Service was good, but only one waiter for the entire room, so a little slow.
Food was good, ambiance was very nice.
I would recommend.
We made a reservation for 9:30 and upon arrival to our table our waiter said very bluntly that we need to order soon because the kitchen closes at 10.
This isn’t how I wanted to start my meal and considering the prices...this isn’t how we should be greeted.
We let it go though.
The ceviche was CRAZY salty! We didn’t finish it.
The lamb was fatty and the wine was overpriced and just “so so”.
Honestly, I rarely give bad reviews but sadly this restaurant was a HUGE disappointment!
My favorite place in midtown when I want a fancy burger.
This is a beautiful room with excellent servers. And I'm usually favorably disposed to places that have been around awhile, and aren't trying to follow fashion but offer consistently high quality food and professional service in an elegant setting. Which makes it a shame that they delivered a "NY strip steak" that was not only disappointing but barely edible. Yes, it was overcooked, but even if cooked properly, it just was not a good cut of meat -- in fact, I've never seen a real NY strip that looked like that. In 21st century NYC, it is utterly routine for steaks to be priced at $50+, but there are tons of competitive options and the baseline level of quality that one can expect both at respectable steakhouses and good restaurants generally is quite high. I can't fathom how the Monkey Bar thinks it can get away with serving this piece of beef. The appetizer (tuna tartare) was much better, and the potatoes were fine. So were the drinks. I'd like to believe that this was an aberration, but it's a hard one to explain.
Took my kids out to dinner and had a wonderful meal and get together
Great prime rib special!
Having moved out of the City seven years ago, I was thrilled to re-discover one my favorite haunts, the Monkey Bar. I hosted a friend for lunch on her birthday and she too is now an enthusiastic fan of the place. The service/food/scene was excellent and the experience every bit as good as my fond memories of former ones.
The only surprising aspect of our meal at Monkey Bar last Saturday night was that there was no one else there... Why is this? The service was excellent, the drinks were fabulous, the food was delicious and the dining room itself is delightful. Can't find a single fault.
Solid choice for a good meal with good service. Was there on a rainy Wednesday and while the seating area was 70% full the noise level was very low and that made for easy conversation. The scallop ceviche was excellent. Well made cocktails. The bar was kind of hopping when I arrived, which was fun while I waited for my dinner guest.
The food was fantastic, the restaurant was beautiful, the hostess was very friendly. The waiter could have been friendlier and more attentive.
Classic old-school restaurant in a great neighborhood.
Overall from the reviews it sounded as if this was a hot spot but it wasn't even close. The crowd was very old...very. The food was basic considering the price.
Went there for early Mother’s Day w my sister My parents used to go there back in the day. We celebrated our parents who are no longer with us. A treat was meeting the original mural artist who happened to be dining at the sane time an over the top experience fir us! Food and service excellent
Bestie Trip 2019
Outstanding service as always and food was terrific. We had the halibut special.
Always great food and professional, terrific service in a wonderful quintessential old NY establishment. Love sitting in the booths. Private, quiet and cozy.
Wonderful as always. Quintessential NYC bar, never disappoints.
I do always lunches at the Monkey Bar, a classic NY City restaurant.
we had a wonderful time at the monkey bar. the service was great as was the food and ambience. we go there often and will continue to do so. the bar area is fun too. they have live piano music and it's very cozy. the main dining room is more formal and glamorous.
It was good about 10 years ago but I am sorry to say the menu was limited.....on a Saturday evening. Too dark to even read it! Offer small flashlights and reading glasses like Davios. My salad was extremely salty. Inedible. My friends liked their burgers. I expected better, frankly. I’ll be going to another restaurant next time. I think the Monkey Bar is a bit tired.
Did you change chefs? Owners?
Dining room was dead on a Thurs pm
bar was vibrant
food and service good
Beautiful and fun restaurant. Salads are expensive and uninspired. Main dish was fine. Salad course was a disappointment. Thank you. Service was superb.
The place was its usual excellent self, topped by a wait staff that left us discreetly alone when they understood that we were in for a long and romantic dinner, not an eat and run. The were observant, but stood back as needed. Superb. Tactful.
Enjoyed the ‘old New York’ ambience. The Monkey Bar is always enjoyable!
Lovely restaurant, perfect for an intimate meal or business dinner when you want to actually hear the other person.
Food was great?
Love the ambiance at Monkey Bar! Went for lunch with friends and had a lovely time.
Wonderful iconic NYC restaurant, whose baretenders mix the best cocktails in town. Lovely dining room with lots of "monkey" decor touches and a wonderful mural. Love that the tables are well spaced so that you never feel crowded. Food was excellent, service attentive without being in your face. Everything prepared perfectly, as ordered, with no mishaps from the kitchen. Classic NYC dining at its best.
Great ambiance, service and food. Can’t go wrong.
Lovely ambience and varied menu. We sat in the bar area, a bit less noisy and business like than main room. Prices at lunch were extremely high, however. $40 for 5 sea scallops a tad over the top. If money no object a nice piece of nyc history.
An overall great place to hang out. The piano bar was fun, the appetizers tasted great and the service was incredible. It was great in 2009 and just as good in 2019. I highly recommend it.
Great food, classy and dignified atmosphere, excellent service, too pricey.
we have been here a few times before and it's a wonderful place for a special occasion. the food was delicious and the rom has a wonderful 1930"s NYC vibe. Make a date!!!
It was a very good experience with good service and good food. My table for two was quiet and the decor, including the wonderful murals and monkey themed artisan pieces.
