It was ok. A hotel restaurant with over cooked food. Too much like an old hotel from the 70s. The service was really nice.
We had dinner at McKay’s on Friday night and it was great! We thought the breakfast buffet would be just as good if not better!! For $20/person it was more like an over priced continental breakfast at a hotel. Cold food, rock hard cinnamon roles, and a disappointing selection. Nothing about it was even warm and I would have rather had the option for more pastries or pancakes/waffles versus a chicken broth soup for the chef’s special on the buffet. The staff were very friendly and the restaurant is clean and well decorated but I would not recommend this buffet to anyone!
First time to McKay’s. We chose it because it was in between for a friend from Westchester and me from Pasadena. I decided to take the train because the website said the station was on the corner of Figueroa and Expo. Not. Really pretty underwhelming. The signage is poor so it’s really easy to pass it (and not so easy to turn around). Parking is nonexistent except in hotel garage. Food was OK to inedible. My fish and chips were OK but missing something green like coleslaw that usually accompanies it in most restaurants. Tons of fries though. My friend had rigatoni that looked dry and she didn’t eat. To their credit they removed her dish from the bill and did offer to bring her something else (which she declined). On the plus side it was quiet (very few people in there) and clean. If average is what you’re after it’ll be OK for you. Otherwise, drive a little further into downtown where there are better choices.
First time trying out McKay's for lunch. The food and service were good. The decor is a little underwhelming, but clean.
The food just isn't that good!! Our server was sweet and attentive and the prices are more then fair
I initially chose McKay's for a business lunch because I needed to meet someone who was staying downtown and I was coming in from Orange County. It was a great choice as he was able to get there easily using Uber and it was right off the Harbor Freeway and I could miss the downtown crush. Besides being a great place for a business lunch, the food was exceptional. I had an Asian-style Ahi salad which had some interesting spins and tasted great. The waitress was very attentive. Thanks!
We shared a crab/mango salad. It had minimum dressing so we found the salad with minimal flavor.
We were not happy about the salad and gave our feedback to the waiter. I thought my order of Fish & Chips was ok. The potatoes were excellent but I felt the fish was somewhat limited. Maybe there should have been more fish or a vegetable added to plate. My friend was not thrilled about her rib meal maybe because not enough meat. I thought rib meat was delicious with too much potatoes. This dish also needed a vegetable. I'm sure McKay's does better with burgers and sandwiches.
Even though there were regular seating tables available, they sat us in lounge seating. This made it somewhat difficult to eat. Waiter was slow to arrive, and even slower to take our full order. Waited over 30 minutes after placing order for any food to arrive, and appetizer arrived with regular entrees rather than beforehand. Food was average, and most items were very salty. About the only good thing about this place was the parking, which we should have just stayed in, as parking near the Shrine Auditorium was extremely expensive and traffic was horrid.
Excellent choice when attending events at USC. Convenient to Galen Center. Good food, fair prices, and great service.
Loved the grilled chicken sandwich.
Food is okay, nothing to rave about. Great choice if staying at the Radisson.
Good service, but food was just so-so. My grilled chicken sandwich was devoid of chicken.
Had a few friends in town and decided to give McKay's a try. We grew up in the area in the 70's and are big USC fans. The memorabilia, artwork adorned the restaurant and added to the vibe. The food was excellent; short rib hash, Burger was fresh, served on brioche bun. We will be back again.
Went there because it was close to the hotel. Not sure why the bad reviews. Food was good. Service was quick and friendly. No wait, and not many people there at 8pm on a Sat night.
This is a great place, especially if you're a football fan. Lots of USC memorabilia from John McKay era. Food is very good, menu features a good variety of items. Bar area is hopping in the evenings when sports are televised on big screen TVs in bar. It's not easy to get a table for dinner during football game days so plan ahead.
Family night out to concert at shrine
Make a reservation - especially if you are planning to dine before or after an event at the Galen Center. People are very nice there and food is good. Service is slow (including bringing the check) on game days as they try to juggle everyone trying to eat and get out at the same time. As long as you understand this going in, you will have a relaxed and enjoyable dining experience and be on your way in time to take the 2 minute walk to the Galen Center entrance and get to your seats.
Very convenient location if you are at USC for any event. Wait staff were very attentive and accurate. Sadly, though, we had both dinner and breakfast there and both were not good. Dinner was literally terrible, other than the asparagus, breakfast was not as bad, but still not good. Bright side? Full bar.
I remember McKay's as having a better menu with more steakhouse entrees, as opposed to sandwiches. There was a filet on the menu as well as a pesto fettuccine, but otherwise the menu seems more like The Lab (a few doors down). The wine "list" makes you feel like you are in the Midwest. This is California, and a nice restaurant needs to have more than one selection of each varietal and also needs to have some mid to upper level wines. This looked like wines that someone picked up from the local grocery store. The historical photos on the walls and the nice ambiance still make this a nice place to visit - but plan to bring your own wine and pay whatever the corkage is - because that's the only way you will be satisfied with your wine selection.
Steak salad had thinnest filet on the salad. It looked like a minute steak. No taste. No one in Restaurant.
Great location and atmosphere to go and catch up with friends, have dinner with family, or just have a nice meal. I loved the service and food. I will definitely come back.
Usually we go here for happy hour and would still highly recommend that, dinner...not so much. They were out of the daily soup special (clam chowder) at 7:45, not good planning. The dining room menu is over priced when you compare to what you can get in the bar. Also, the dining room was freezing. Go for happy hour, but save you money for another choice if you’re going for a nice dinner .
Food would have been five stars except I requested bacon extremely well done, (it was not) I had to send it back.
I liked your restaurant, but the cook failed to follow the instructions of my waiter "Scott", I imfasized that the bacon needed to be extremely well done or I would not be able to eat it, unfortunately it was not therefore I was unable to fully enjoy an otherwise delicious turkey sandwich. Once again "scott" my waiter was excellent!
I have not dined here in a couple years and now I remember why. There were only 5 tables of people and we all waited forever for our food. The staff stayed hidden until the food was brought out. Really disappointing.
We had a successful Happy Hour there and the food did not take forever then.
Not sure what the problem is but it is a shame. Beautiful restaurant.
We enjoyed dinner before the usc basketball game. We chose their hamburgers and sweet potato fries. Excellent choice. We loved the hamburgers.
Food listed on the menu on OpenTable was not listed on the menu at the restaurant. There was only two vegetarian options, a salad and a fried portobello burger. We were seated in the second half of the dining room--very bland, unexciting room--not what we were in the mood for when the other side was cozier and more lively. The food was meh. We couldn't figure out what was off until the bill came, and we realized the restaurant was part of the Radisson hotel. Not mentioned on OpenTable, so we felt pretty duped. Other hotel restaurants mention they are in the hotel, so this one should too. 5/10 do not recommend.
Always enjoy dining here. It's fun to see all the USC Trojan memorabilia and the food is very good. Not a lot of menu choices but enough. Nice bar area which is very busy on game days.
Food was good (pricey) and server was great, but it took forever for the food to come out from the kitchen. Our 1hr. lunch break took 2.5 hours.
Acoustics are quite loud when there's a crowd.
Great food! This was my first time eating breakfast at the restaurant. Typically, I always have lunch, but the breakfast burrito was delicious.
It is one of the few restaurants where you can actually hear yourself. Being an older person I especially appreciated that feature of McKay's. The food was mixed. My son and I split two sandwitches: a chicken, which was very good, and a lobster roll, which neither of us have ever had, and were disappointed at how it was mostly "roll" with not much lobster. The sweet potato fries were excellent.
Awful. They refused to serve us breakfast, since the breakfast service had allegedly just ended when we arrived at 11. There were only 4 people in the restaurant so they surely could have accommodated us. I ordered a BLT, the most breakfast-like thing I could find on the menu. My cousin ordered a salad, and it took about a half hour for us to get our food. It was the worst BLT I have ever had, barely any lettuce, and the "toast" was actually grilled bread slathered in butter. The waiter said the dish came with French fries, but they were actually waffle fries covered in cheese and some weird orange powder. I have never had worse food. Also, the restaurant's website said there was free validated parking in the adjacent Radisson garage, so I parked there. However, I had to pay $12...the garage attendant said there was no free parking on "game day," even though the Rams football game was at night and this was still morning. When I asked the restaurant about this, they said they had no control over the parking, as it was provided by a third party. All in all a terrible experience (though I got to see my young cousin who just started at USC and that part was great!)
They were worried about a concert at the shrine Auditorium nearby so they offered a limited menu which is kind of ridiculous cause the place was empty all night
Restaurant was empty Air conditioning was on so high that it was like an icebox. Since we were the only customers we asked if they could possibly dial back on the a/c and we were told that it can only be done by Radisson hotel engineering staff.
Food took forever for two burgers and a piece of fish. They feature a 1 lb burger. I asked how rare they would make the burgers and waiter said medium rare. I said as rare as possible and it came well done. Waiter had disappeared. At the end of the meal he brought a new server by and said that she would take over. Never saw her again until we paid check. On the way out the kitchen manager asked how everything was and we told her of our disappointment, she apologized but by this time it was too late and she didn't even give me a card or anything.
Nice USC John Mckay memorabilia, but a real disappointment for a huge burger lover like me.
Good food, well prepared and presented. Attentive waitstaff, helpful in providing neighborhood attractions to this out-of-towner. I would definitely recommend McKay's to anyone visiting the USC campus.
The restaurant had a funny smell
We were there before a concert told them so and they did a wonderful job getting us in and out. Exactly what we were looking for.
I would definitely go here again. We enjoyed our business lunch.
The staff at McKay's are always wonderful, attentive but not in an in-your-face way. The food is exactly what you expect, not great but big portions. The bar is excellent for happy hour drinks, with comfortable seating and excellent staff. The dining room is one of the better places for a work lunch - it's usually pretty quiet and the staff, seriously - the staff are fantastic about handling working lunches!
