We just love it there. We go every year for my daughters birthday. The brunch is amazing, the service, and the atmosphere can’t be beat! Highly recommend it.
Excellent ambiance and service, food was great. Only negative was no option for glass of wine...had to buy the entire bottle which was marked up substantially.
A beautiful historic setting, very warm and especially cozy with wood fireplaces burning nearby! The seafood buffet was excellent with many varied options presented at different stations ! Seafood was carefully and perfectly cooked with a very tasty selection of options, along with an ample array of salads and sides! Each station was attended and monitored for restocking and cleanliness!
Deserts were varied And included a chocolate fondue with fresh fruit! Wonderful, wonderful buffet! Kudos to staff for making a memorable meal!
Great service and food!
I always enjoy at this restaurant. Nice atmosphere and good food. Can’t go wrong. Sunday brunch is my favorite. Seafood buffet is great, offering lots of clam and shrimp options.
A beautiful setting and delicious meal. A great place to visit especially with your favorite Cadets!
The Hotel Thayer is a historic landmark that has been well preserved however our experience did not live up to expectations. It took a long time to get our order taken and once the food arrived we didn’t see any wait staff. We sat with our dirty dishes while other tables were served. Also, I made our reservation stating it was my friend's birthday. Nobody asked us about dessert and I had to find a waiter just to order tea which didn’t come until I asked another waiter to get it. The food was just meh but the service was a disaster and I would not recommend it.
Our waiter Justin was great. Filets done perfectly
Ambiance nice and quiet well worth the trip
After dinner drink cognacs complimentary - thank you
Natasha made our dinner experience especially wonderful. She was especially warm, polite and professional .. going out of her way to assure we enjoyed our dinner experience. Thank you!
I Have been to the Resturant several times, but wasn’t impressed this time. The prime beef was practically raw, the buffet food was cold. I think for the price your charging your should be leaving feeling you’ve had a great brunch. I don’t think I would come back. Very disappointed.
The good was pretty good overall. Problem it took a while to re stock cocktail sauce. They ran out if some cakes. They were under staffed. I don't think it's worth the money. Maybe $25 or $30.
We truly enjoyed the Sunday Champagne Brunch. It was a wonderful experience with attentive service that seemed to anticipate our every need without hovering. It was a special brunch with great friends. We enjoyed the food and drinks and never felt rushed. Overall, a terrific experience.
We were staying at the hotel for a friend’s Wedding be held at West Point. Service was amazing from greeting to farewell.... we partook in the Friday evening Seafood buffet. Quality of buffet was above expectations! Amazing selection!
While food choices were excellent the service was not. I think they forgot about us.
We had reservations for 5 but they were able to accommodate our changing our group to 8. The food was really tasty and quite varied for a buffet. Our server, Justin, was really nice and took excellent care of us. We love the history of this venue. Great place to meet and the views of the Hudson River are like no other.
Staff were exceptional and the food terrific!
We went to the highly hyped seafood buffet on Friday evening. It was just OK. They ran out of breaded clams - twice - and never replaced them. Also, many desserts ran out and were not replaced. The entrees were overcooked and left too long in hot plates. Salmon was good and the chicken and shrimp. I have been to MUCH better stocked and MUCH better tasting seafood buffets. Our waitress was sweet but failed to clean dishes as we used them. NOT good at a buffet.
1:05 hours for food to get to our table, steak was so cold the butter they put in top never melted. The fish they served as monk fish was Cod covered in a cold sauce. The side of rice sat so long in the plate I could lift it up off of the plate with my fork in one piece or flat glob.
Amazing historic spot. Food choices were fantastic and service was incredible .
While this historic hotel in beautiful West Point is a draw, we were quite disappointed with the service. We had a dinner reservation for 8 and were seated at a table set for breakfast for 10! The dining room was not crowded, but apparently they had not prepared a table for us. We were told they would take 2 place settings away but never did.
The service was slow, a salad was forgotten, as was a side dish. Chicken came out undercooked and the butternut squash soup tasted like maple syrup. We ordered decaf coffee to be told it was not fresh! Perhaps without telling us that a fresh pot should have been made. We were so looking forward to a nice evening out, and were expensively disappointed.
As a bunch for a special occasion it fit the bill. The live piano music was lovely, and the service was great. Some food however wasn’t as good, either not heated up all the way or lacking taste but the majority was well prepared and something to suit each pallet. At 1 hour they stopped offering us drink refills and it was made apparent that our time was up, which was poorly done.
I’m surprised they didn’t go the extra mile and include descriptions of the desserts, have a working fondue machine (instead of the chocolate staying clumpy and hard) or listing ingredients for at least those with food allergies. The location was pretty and worth doing it once.
The wait for our food was unacceptable. There were 2 weddings going on - so that could have been a part of it, but if that's the reason, you need to hire more or shut the kitchen down during events. Disappointing
Two of us went for a 1 PM lunch on a Saturday, and our visit at MacArthur's was miserable from beginning to end. We were walked through a dining room that had not been cleared since who knows when. There were dirty dishes stacked on trays at regular intervals. We were seated at a table not near a window, so our view was of dirty dishes continuously being stacked on the trays. In fact, the manager came and re-organized the trays of dirty dishes so more could be stacked! There was an available table for 2 next to a window that was never filled.
The service was unbelievably poor. The only words from our server were whether we were ready to order. She appeared to have been trained to serve in a diner, not a fine dining establishment. We asked for cocktails first. It took 22 minutes for them to arrive. The server had no tray, so some of my drink had spilled. My friend had ordered Prosecco which was served in a generic wine glass instead of a champagne glass.
We were never asked whether we wanted a second drink. We were only asked to place our orders. We each ordered a Caesar salad with chicken, and I also ordered French onion soup. Everything arrived at one time. I asked for ground pepper. The server took the pepper shaker from the table and placed it in front of me. The food was 100% nondescript - no flavor and only a few pieces of chicken on the salad.
We were never asked whether we wanted coffee or dessert. She came over with our 2 checks, reviewed them while leaning over my shoulder, decided they were incorrect, and returned with corrected checks.
I would have spoken with a manager on my way out if I could have found one. Never again!
Beautiful restaurant, but not worth the price. We got there at 530 when they opened. We werent offered bread, or even water at the table. We ordered steaks, potatoes and a side of green beans. The steaks were good, but the baked potatoes were hard and undercooked. We never got the grean beans. Service was extremely slow. All in all it was very disappointing.
Personally I think $10 and up for a glass of wine is a little excessive but the food prices are reasonable. We go for the ambiance. The wait staff is very friendly but need a little more training on service. We had to ask about specials, what the soup was, whether the prosecco was sweet or dry, etc., and some of these questions required them to check. No big deal, just not as polished as it could be. My rueben and one glass of wine was $24, not including tax or tip.
The food was good but it took 1 and 1/2 hours to get it and when it finally came it was cold and had to be sent back! Was very disappointed we were celebrating our 20th Anniversary and expected an exceptional experience. Unfortunately that didn’t happen.
Food and decor were very nice. Unfortunately, the kitchen staff must of been short staffed as our entrees were served barely warm and our dessert took over forty minutes to arrive. Our waitress was exceptional under the circumstances.
Beautiful setting. Comfortable dining room. Very nice buffet. Excellent attentive staff.
It was a great experience. Food was delicious and service was excellent.
5 Star General Name - NO STAR RESTAURANT! Over priced and under delivered. Very sad experience for my birthday dinner. Came with my family from the city. For starters, everything took forever to be brought to the table. The waiter Justin kept apologizing saying he didn’t know what was taking so long and would leave to check the basement. The service and food killed any ambiance that could’ve been there!!!
The appetizers weren’t bad but the entrées were a nightmare! 2 at my table had the pork chop (which was undercooked with a glaze like honey baked ham); Short-rib was ok; and one 14 oz. ribeye - 7 oz were fat & the other grisly meat. Very disappointing! The butter topping added no value to the steak.
We asked for substitutes for the sides; the order was all wrong. Everything was under seasoned. The creamed spinach was milk poured on spinach w/ no substance; the mashed potatoes tasted worse than instant potatoes. I cook so I know what mashed potatoes look and taste like. Horrible! The whole order took so long, my family begged me not to say anything as I was about to. We kept thinking it would get better but didn’t.
For my birthday dessert, I ordered the bread pudding. It took 20 minutes to heat the ‘hockey puck’ clump and put on a plate. Despicable! We asked for a few of the somewhat palatable things to be packed to go - the items never reached our table!
The clincher was when we arrived, we were the fifth table with 2 waiters on staff. Thruout the dinner, the hostess, the floor manger & others were assisting the wait staff. Poor planning. Then the other waiter Sandy, who never graced our table, saw my husband had an AMEX card in the guest check presenter and rudely and brashly stated as she passed by ‘WE DON’T TAKE AMEX!’ Was that necessary to be so rude? What happened to customer service?
Won’t be back and won’t recommend. Perhaps they are preparing the cadets for battlefield bad food and service.
The food was delicious, the service was impeccable, the ambiance was breathtaking. Thank you for a memorable day.
I am a grad, so it saddens me to see this place. Dishes piled up ridiculously high on a number of waiters' stations (middle of restaurant); buffet was a mess (could not order off of menu - which I will spot you, since football Sat.); food not replenished when buffet serving container empty, etc. Seemed to be poorly organized and without effective leadership. That said, wait staff was very pleasant - which makes this an even sadder leadership failure, since they appeared to want to do well. Someone in leadership (ownership) needs to CARE enough to fix this place; a few effective processes would solve 80% of your problems (Ex. put the disgusting dirty dish piles behind an artful, tri-fold screen in a corner of the restaurant; how hard is that to fix?) If it was not on West Point's campus, it would be out of business in six months. Football Weekends are your time to 'shine' (people in from all geographies); I assure you that you will never, ever become a destination restaurant in this current state - but perhaps that is just 'fine' for the owners (continue to limp-along like this, clearing the profit that you need to). If that is the case, shame on you; you bring ill light on the Academy (the general public does not make the distinction that the restaurant it privately owned). If I seem frustrated, it is because there has been very little change over the past few years (season ticket holders). I assure you that this is my one and only review, as I do not sense any interest nor sobriety in trying to improve this restaurant. MacArthur's name should be taken off of this place. Sad
Buffet after the game. Food was excellent and plentiful.
Arrived for the Saturday pre Army game breakfast. Found out only had a buffet available but web site indicated differently. Nothing special about buffet. Omelet station was disappointment. Servers stood around and talked and did not pay attention to guests. An historic and beautiful location however the decor needs refreshing.
This was our first dining experience at MacArthurs Restaurant and overall we were very pleased. The food was very good and the ambiance is great. The only hiccup was the service. For our party of four, one entree came out about ten minutes after the other entrees. The staff did apologize and offered free dessert to our party. That was nice of them but we ended up waiting about 10 minutes for the desserts at the end of our meal and we ended up taking the desserts to go. We plan on giving the restaurant a second shot next time we at West Point and I hope our experience improves next time.
Great waitress Nicole and an excellent meal. Took a bit longer to get meal but restaurant was very crowded
Poor service, mediocre food.
My husband and I dined there on Sunday for brunch and had a very disappointing experience. Our server was terrible, not engaging, took a long time to get me a cup of tea, seemed distracted when speaking to us. The food was also not enjoyable. The meat was dry, the bread was stale, cheese was slimy, just overall now edible. We will not return.
The service was abominable. It took over half an hour to get a cold roll, another half hour to get appetizers, and at least another half hour to get a simple salad. So, after nearly an hour and a half, the entrees had not been delivered. All the while there were two adjacent messy tables that weren't cleaned. The first glass of wine was incorrect and for each course we had to ask for the appropriate implements. The net effect was to lose our appetites so we paid for what we actually consumed and left.
Very nice ambiance and view of the river. Excellent food. Great service. Would definitely come back.
