Mawn is a noodle house with “no rules,” and the first restaurant for Chef Phila Lorn and his wife Rachel, who bring with them close to 20 years of experience in Philly’s restaurant scene. Phila, pronounced “Pee La,” broken English for Philadelphia, is a first-generation Cambodian-American chef. The first in his family to be born here, his parents and siblings came to Philadelphia as refugees in 1985 after surviving the war in Cambodia.Mawn, which means “chicken” in Khmer, the Cambodian language, represents more than one thing. To Phila, chicken was at every meal growing up, and to his parents, chicken represented peacetime. During the war and genocide of the Cambodian people, there was mostly only what was found in nature to eat, including rice and salt. If there was chicken, it meant no war. At the end of that dark time, recipes were lost, and culture was wiped out, but through survival, a new authenticity was born.

Passed through generations to our chef, who brought delicious meals to 15th and Sansom of Philadelphia. Then from 15th and Sansom to 1300 South St. We have delectable food that you fall in love with and will bring comfort to you, from our meat lovers to our vegans. Great evening at Mercato - first time back in a while. Pasta dishes were superb; grilled Caesar is top rate. Meatball app was very good - and substantive. First time seeing artichokes whole - peel off leaves - on menu. A bit surprised, but good. Eggplant tower was a little disappointing - skin was tough. Service was excellent; we expected the noise level, as it's small and busy - but seated next to the kitchen gave us a little more banging pots and pans. :-) Glad to be back - will return for sure.

The restaurant was out of a few menu items, possibly because we went in a Monday. Everything we ordered was delicious. The duck was amazing. If you’re on the fence about this place, just go.

My husband and I have come here for so long, and wanted to have one last brunch here before they shut their doors. We have to say the staff, between front and back, are just rockstars at what they do and provide. The food is always top notch, the cocktails perfect, and the service warm and welcoming. Truly a delight any time we can spend some time with our 2 dachshunds and enjoy the outside space here. We hope you and team have much successes going forward and we hope for the next iteration will be here soon. Happy New Year Hawthorne's!
