What Insiders Are Saying
Plenty of new restaurants are good, but few are actually memorable. Kali leave its mark.
We had a very nice birthday celebration and it happened to be dying in LA week. We opted for the dine LA tasting menu and everything was delicious. We loved the clear gazpacho, yellowtail Crudo, and the Black barley risotto. Deana was an awesome server and provided a lot of color and insight behind all of the dishes as well as the background of the owners and the restaurant. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening.
This place was amazing. The food was great, service was great, the entire experience was enjoyable. The ice cream with cured egg yolk was amazing. My friend and I had the Dinela menu and there wasn't a miss from the entire menu. Definitely had things here that I haven't had anywhere else or combinations I've seen before. Worth going to and worth going back.
It was good, everything had really amazing flavors. I just wished my entrees (all3 of them) came out hot and not luke warm. Service was great, chef was super nice. Would def come back!
The pork lion was heavily over-salted. Service was pleasant, but I would not give this restaurant a Michelin star. Nevertheless, lively experience, just wouldn’t recommend this place over others.
Service was kind of slow but everything f was overall phenomenal
I had high expectations for this place since it has a Michelin star, but I was disappointed. The waitress was great, but a 7 course meal ended up being a 3 hour dinner. The people around us came 30 min after we had started eating and ended up going through their courses quicker than we did. The food was innovative, but the taste was ok.
Watermelon Rush was very acidic did not enjoy it at all. Tasting menu was great and black barley risotto to die for. Gelato with cured egg yolk was great.
I absolutely love everything about this restaurant- the food, the chef, the staff, the ambience. They serve their Michelin Star!
Came here for the DineLA restaurant week but my friends and I ended up ordering the food from there regular menu. Our server is wonderful (forgot her name). She is very attentive. We ordered the uni pasta, oyster, duck breast and dry aged ribeye. My favorite dish is the ribeye, it’s a must try dish. Chef Kevin even came to our table to greet us and explained his Kali hot sauce and the oyster flower. I really like my first experience at Kali and plan to come back in the future. One more thing to note, our server even treated us with free dessert even we told her that we were full already. That was very sweet of her.
The food was exquisite and the service excellent . However the noise level definitely took away from the experience. Tablecloths and some fabric wall art would help. Since bread is not brought until after appetizers the tables next to us on their 2nd round of drinks just got louder and louder. Would love to return with friends but at this noise level will have to only be the two of us .
On the occasion of my birthday, a group of friends were excited to take me to Kali, where I’d never been but had wanted to try since it opened.
The service was among the worst I’ve ever experienced - let alone at a restaurant with a Michelin star!
The first example was when I asked for water from my waitress as soon as I was seated (it was a very warm day); instead of the water, the waitress took away the setups that were on the table, placed first the dining menus and then a second wine menu on the table. Finally, when she brought the new setups (black instead of white napkins), I mentioned that I was still waiting for the water. Then she snapped, “It’s right there”, pointing to the side table from which she then retrieved it.
When the other two (of a total of four, including me) diners arrived at our table, they tried to get the same waitress’s attention and literally had to stop her from going back to the kitchen so they could place their drink orders. (I joked that the service was strictly DIY, which got a good laugh from the group.)
A couple of different waiters attended to us, but the orders were consistently misplaced in front of the wrong person and had to be reshuffled, contributing to the feeling that the waitstaff just wasn’t paying attention.
Later, when we ordered for our last friend, who was stuck in traffic, her appetizer was placed at her seat before her arrival because, “The kitchen didn’t want to keep it back there.”
As far as the food went, my appetizer - a “risotto” made with barley and black tea - it looked wholly unappetizing and tasted like a barnyard. (The sea urchin spaghetti second course was much better.)
Afterward, I considered calling to speak to a manager about our experience but, considering the treatment we received, I doubted my comments would be welcomed.
To put it mildly, we were all disappointed and chagrined - and agreed that Kali wasn’t worth a second visit.
The food were just okay. The beef burger , beef was over cooked. CoD was fresh but it doesn’t have any taste. Uni pasta was good.
We had a lovely night at Kali
The food was delicious and extremely interesting and different
The service was warm and welcoming
Altogether a really good night out
Marvelous, innovative food, the uni pasta is incredible as is the duck breast with crunchy spaetzle, cherries and pickled raisins. Service is perfect also.
Exceptional. Aaron was fantastic!!
Staff was amazing food was best I’ve had in ages. Fancy but cool-you don’t feel uncomfortable!!
Excellent as usual
Lovely environment, good food - we did not have the tasting menu so perhaps we didn't have the Michelin star experience, but the steak was divine.
One of the best tasting menus I've ever had! Every dish nailed it for me, especially the beef tartare. Our server was super friendly and accommodating. Will definitely return!
was very good -waitress was great, had about 6 dishes-all great but did not like duck but everything else was reflective of their michelin rating-will go back for sure
The meal was super expensive and the wine pairing was mediocre. Our table had the chef's tasting menu & wine pairing ($185 person). The only dish I really enjoyed was the dessert - a meringue gelato with candied yolk shavings, very innovated. However, the rest of the meal was average and the wines didn't compliment the food. The portions were small and we ended up ordering more dishes...
What an amazing restaurant! Not only fantastic food...but incredible service. What could possibly be better. Michelin Star well deserved!
Very good!
Great place to eat ... and have fun... The wine pairing is a MUST !!!
The beef tartar on the chef’s menu is the best item! A must get!!!
The oysters and the duck was amazing! A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I have never had duck that tasted that good in my life, ever!
The Sommelier, Drew, was a patient gentleman and recommended some amazing drinks for us.
Absolutely stellar. Light years ahead of where it was when it opened 3 years ago. Well deserving of its Michelin star.
Tasty creative food. Great service. Merengue with shaved candied egg yolk the bomb!
Great meal and excellent waitstaff. A bit disorganized but always professional. Went with a la cart options and loved them all. Don’t skip the dessert!
Sensational food and service
An absolutely lovely experience. Delectable and gorgeous food. Perfect service...attentive and gracious. Great for either a special occasion dinner or just a casual bite out. Epitome of excellent California cuisine.
Absolutely lovely. Service was extraordinary!
Food was fantastic - well deserving of its one Michelin :) Had the tasting menu, ribeye and gelato were standouts!
Great ambience with good lighting. Unable to do chefs tasting menu due to earlier closure on Sundays (9pm vs 10pm usually) and our reservation was at 815/830.
It was excellent!
Innovative fresh seasonal California cuisine at it’s finest!!
We were seated half an hour late to our table, but the staff were lovely and tried their best, however the food definitely didn’t limit e up to the hype. Sorry kali..
Everything was incredible. There were four of us and we ordered 6 appetizers, four cocktails, 2 entrees, 3 desserts and it was all perfection. Service was wonderful as well. Attentive but not intrusive (shout out to Aaron)
We will be back.
Service here is a 10+!
Food is fresh, flavorful and beautifully presented. I can't wait to go back.
Our server Jessica was amazing and the food was amazing!
Booked this reservation for my birthday. They called 24 hours in advance to confirm. When my party arrived on time, they told us our table would be ready in a minute, and this was not true. They told us 20 more minutes 4 times, and we sat an hour and a half after my reservation time. Food was very good. The chef is excellent. The host needs to be fired and the restaurant needs to hire someone with some restaurant management experience.
