What Insiders Are Saying
Plenty of new restaurants are good, but few are actually memorable. Kali leave its mark.
The food was extraordinary but the service was abysmal. It took forever for someone to take our order. And, we were basically ignored the entire time. One of us asked the waiter for a glass of wine to match her next course (and literally said: bring any wine). She had finished her meal and he never brought the wine. She ended up having to order from another waitress who seemed annoyed. The waiter never returned to take a dessert order. Finally we were able to flag someone else who again became annoyed they had to take our order. The restaurant is not large so it is remarkable how ignored we were - it's almost as though they had to try to avert their eyes to wait on us. It is a very expensive restaurant - the food is amazing - wish the service was better especially given the recent Michellin star rating. The staff did not seem to care.
Amazing food and friendly service. We’ll be going back in the near future.
Fantastic Food! Flavour combinations spot on! Would highly recommend.
We went because it's got a Michelin star. The food was good, but we were very surprised by the noise level. Although many LA restaurants are noisy, this place is just unreasonably loud, people were literally shouting across the table. The staff said they were going to change the flooring and install more sound absorbing wall covering soon, before that happens I certainly will not go back.
We had an amazing waitress and the staff was very kind and helpful. We enjoyed the chefs menu. Will go back and would love to recommend it to friends!
The food was great especially when paired with the quality to price ratio. Highly recommend!
Our 43rd Anniversary
Fantastic sea urchin pasta dish! Service could be better,.
Staff, ambience, almost all of the food was top notch. Would go back. Wish there were more veggie entre choices.
Food was pretty good; but the music was much too loud and made it impossible to speak to each other without yelling and asking folks to repeat themselves. I’m not sure why these places have all hard surfaces and no sound absorption capability . Even my 30 something friends had trouble communicating in that environment.
Excellent food and impeccable service. Highly recommend Kali.
Great experience! Seasonal tasting menu was fantastic and the service was on point.
Kali never disappoints! We always receive a warm welcome, tasty cocktail, delicious menu and great service! Such a gem!
Honestly this was a huge disappointment for such a highly rated restaurant. The food was simply not that impressive for LA. Cool sounding dishes, but mediocre execution.
Plus, with a restaurant this expensive, adding a 5% "kitchen appreciation" fee is absurd.
Excellent lunch, food was fabulous, service attentive
We ordered the burrata/berry/tomato dish, charred avocado, barley risotto, pasta dish, boneless ribeye steak, and chocolate dessert. Everything was delicious, especially the burrata and pasta dishes. Great atmosphere
We love Kali. A neighborhood restaurant with a Michelin star!
A really fantastic experience for our first time at Kali. The food is well worth it's new Michelin star. The service was outstanding and and it was an overall great time.
This was my 3rd time at Kali, and my colleagues' first time at Kali. I recommended Kali to them, and it didn't disappoint. Unfortunately, being that it's summer, there were some flies around our table and food. So we did spend a bit of time trying to get rid of the flies, which was annoying. Still, it's hard to blame the staff for that. Food was great as usual. The staff did have to move us to a different table, which was slightly less convenient as well. After we were served our foods, the server checked on us much less, which is understandable but left us waiting to order more drinks. Overall, I'd definitely recommend!
I had high expectations for this Michelin star restaurant and they definitely hit the nail on the head! Our service was fantastic, and the waitress made sure my birthday meal was extra special! I loved the ambiance of the place and the food was delicious. We stayed deep into the night and loved every second!
Amazing food and service, extremely well sourced ingredients prepared with perfect classical technics. Very creative combinations without the all too often trendy ones that are overdone. The wine list is well balance, with well selected vintages and a great Riesling offering, Veyder Malberg being one of my favorite
The meal was outstanding, beginning with a Negroni that they make with an aged barrel whiskey, black cod that could not have prepared better anywhere else, ,oust, velvety texture, and the dessert, could have gone there just for dessert, meringue gelato with shaved egg yolk. Definitely a go to restaurant whenever I am in LA!
Bad experience. You don’t feel like you are welcomed. This server takes a long time to go around and come to your table.
Once we ordered the food and the wine, it took a while to get the wine on the table. I found a fly in the wine and I could not take it anymore and left. When I complain to the manager about the wine, the response was worse than the bad experience with the fly. Rather than a simple apology I was told that flies are common place in the restaurants at this time in Los Angeles. I guess the next time I’ll order flies as a side dish.
Kevin & Drew have been doing a great job from day 1, and they earned it! Strong recommend the uni pasta.
I very rarely write reviews but after dining at Kali twice now, I had to share my compliments. Celebrating my birthday here a few months ago was such a wonderful experience! It was the most incredible dinner I've had in a really long time so when it was my friend's birthday, I definitely wanted to come back.
We ordered the blini with caviar (little bites of heaven!), yellowtail, black barley risotto (one of my favorites with the little crisp on top), black cod and cavatelli pasta (my other favorite!) and ended the night on a sweet note with the meringue gelato.
Dining here both times, my friends and I never had to flag a server down for anything. We were constantly checked on, our water glasses filled, plates changed, napkins folded when we left to use the bathroom... we never had to ask for anything because all of our needs were anticipated. Chef Kevin visited us a few times during the night and having the chef come greet the guests speaks volumes because you don't see that at every restaurant and it's nice to talk to the creative person behind the dishes. Coming from a hospitality background, I can't help but pick up on these things, but even if you aren't in the service industry, you won't not notice this level of attention and service.
My friends and I had the most enjoyable evening ever and even though the restaurant was full of other patrons, we left feeling like we were the most important guests. Thank you so, so much Chef Kevin & the entire Kali team for your hospitality and amazing dining experience! Your Michelin Star is so well deserved. I can't wait to be back! :)
Dined at Kali for the first time during DineLA week. Our meal was so so delicious and the whole dining experience was really lovely. We'll definitely be back.
Amazing food! Will definitely be back!!
The worst service I have had at a fine dining restaurant. Our lady server was judgemental and not friendly at all. Not sure in the point of reserving a table when they put us in a corner right in front of the restroom while there's about three free booth tables.
Food presentation was decent but the taste was not what I expected from a Michelin Star restuarant. They definitely did not deserve that star. Even though the cod was drenched in sauce, it still had a very fishy taste. They over drenched all their food with sauce which defeats the point of fresh food. Sauce should bring out the essence of the main dish, not overpower it.
We went there because of their one star Michelin
I don’t think they are even close from that level of recognition
Having dinner in hundreds of Michelin star restaurant, this is why I review this place
First off , it’s super loud , don’t expect having a deep conversation their
Second we had a very ( even to much ) friendly service, but sadly not super clean
( the server would clean or table from the crumble of the bread with his bear hands and 2 min later would shaved food with his bear hand on the table next to us
Third , the food is really just ok , nothing unique or amazing
Finally, i think it’s a great neighborhood restaurant but to give them a 1 Michelin star status is way over the top
I consider myself a really good home cook and I love to try our LA’s great restaurants for special occasions. In my experience, it’s so rare that every course hits it out of the park. Very difficult to do. But that’s exactly what Kali did on my wife’s birthday. We just loved it. The service was exquisite, caring and attentive. One of the owners has created a really interesting wine list which definitely expanded my pallet. They truly did a remarkable job and are so worthy of their Michelin star.
The food was excellent but I felt that we were being rushed through our dinner because we chose the DineLA menu rather than pricier option - duh, that's why I'm here, to try the restaurant at a discounted price. They screwed up some of our courses, brought them out of order, and made up for it with free wine, but the whole dinner was totally rushed, and we wanted to order another dessert course at the end (after the totally amazing yolk dessert omg), but they didn't offer - was just like, you just want these five courses, well take em and be gone. Meh. I wouldn't go back for the full tasting because of these issues, but the food is great.
Food and service were so outstanding I feel a bit guilty only giving 4 stars. But, it was a little pricey and the decor looked a little cheaper than expected for the price and quality. Bathroom was a mess too.
I love this place. I've been several times before. It never disappoints.
very very good food !! seriously well put together
Came to Kali last night for my birthday and I was blown away! Chef Kevin definitely deserved the Michelin Star 2019. My review mentions my favorite dishes from the 2019 DineLA summer tasting menu, not in the order the course was served in:
Drinks, service, and the meal was absolutely amazing and they had the most friendly and hospitable staff. Our server was Deana and she is too sweet! She was so so accommodating throughout the entire night, and I really felt like I got the VIP treatment. We went with the DineLA menu which featured their famous Black Barley Risotto that is simultaneously rich, hearty, and subtle. I loved the crispy garlic crisp on the risotto. It really complimented the dish.
I also really enjoyed the gazpacho. It was served with a sesame crisp and heirloom tomatoes. Everything was so masterfully planned to be complimentary to every taste and texture. The heirloom tomatoes were sweet and gave the gazpacho a nice, light finish.
The Yellowtail Crudo was also so so delicious. Responsibly sourced from Santa Barbara, the yellowtail was a delight. The sauce was great and topped with seaweeds. You really have to try this place to really absorb all the amazing qualities this place has to offer! Receiving a Michelin Star is no easy feat and this place is well deserved! They also have the most delicious rosemary buttermilk bread! Hands down the best bread I've ever tasted.
Finally, the meal ended with the most delicious meringue gelato I've ever tasted, with cured yolk sprinkled on top. The sweet and savory finish is a dessert you don't want to miss. Easily one of the highlights of the menu, the gelato was light and the cured yolk really added depth and brought the entire dessert together!
I would totally recommend this restaurant. In fact, everyone needs to try this place and the DineLA tasting menu is so so worth it. Thank you Chef Kevin and Deana for our amazing experience here!
From a "no big deal" dead bug in the water to being poured the same water to being FORBIDDEN from sharing food this is a hard skip. Admittedly, the Sea Urchin pasta was an out of this world dish, which was the only savior of the night.
We had a very nice birthday celebration and it happened to be dying in LA week. We opted for the dine LA tasting menu and everything was delicious. We loved the clear gazpacho, yellowtail Crudo, and the Black barley risotto. Deana was an awesome server and provided a lot of color and insight behind all of the dishes as well as the background of the owners and the restaurant. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening.
Great dining experience ...... excellent service, the most amazing delicious food w/beautiful presentation and great ambiance. This is definitely one of my FAVORITE restaurants!
This place was amazing. The food was great, service was great, the entire experience was enjoyable. The ice cream with cured egg yolk was amazing. My friend and I had the Dinela menu and there wasn't a miss from the entire menu. Definitely had things here that I haven't had anywhere else or combinations I've seen before. Worth going to and worth going back.
