Since 1965, Joe Allen has been a quintessential New York restaurant serving a classic American menu in the heart of the Theater District. Just two blocks from Times Square, it has been a favorite of Broadway performers, locals, and tourists for almost 50 years.
Please note that we begin taking reservations 7 days in advance starting at midnight online and at 11 a.m. over the phone.
Parties of 6 or more should call the restaurant directly.
Due to the high volume of reservations we receive for pre- and post-theater, we can only guarantee a table for a maximum of two hours. If you would like more time, please contact the restaurant directly to make your reservation.
Atmosphere and service were very good. We were seated promptly for a Sat lunch reservation. The waitress was excellent. Unfortunately, there was a very limited menu due to kitchen repairs. The food was a let down. Caesar salad with cubed chicken and a lobster roll on an I grilled hot dog bun with potato chips from a Lays bag. Maybe another time but will probably not return.
As always, pre-dinner the bartenders were attentive, professional, and excellent drink masters. At dinner all staff (host, waitstaff, etc.) were friendly, welcoming and pros. We are lightly but the food was great. Thanks, all!
I love Joe Allen's and dine there any time I am in NYC. The experience wasn't its normal 5-star because the menu was limited due to a gas line failure. Nonetheless, we had a great time and excellent dinner.
Good as usual
We always stop in to Joe Allen for a pre show or après meal. Food is always consistently good, quick service and pleasant, convivial atmosphere.
Lovely late lunch for a friend's birthday.
Joe Allen makes the BEST dirty martinis...which is a problem because I'm spoiled for other places.
Always Amazing! Joe Allen the iconic Manhattan theatrical legendary place to be!
I loved the idea of this iconic place but the food was extremely disappointing. The chicken sandwich was an embarrassment. The crab cake was very small and somewhat bland. I realize that we were there when they had a limited menu but that is no excuse. Way overpriced - that can be overlooked in midtown but not this time. The service was very good - that made it bareable.
They are having gas line trouble. So their kitchen is compromised. Still a good meal, but a limited menu, not quite at their standard.
Everything was on point! Lovely restaurant well deserving of its long standing excellent reputation!
Lovely food in a lovely setting. Great ambiance, and love the food. Apple pie and hamburger was especially good
Limited menu do to technical issues. No gf. Menu. Service great.
Exactly what was expected. A great combination of; food, service, location and setting. Like a more traditional meal before a show. Not a meal to sit, relax and spend time. With an hour or so to eat before a show, it is the right combination of options. My go-to for a meal before a nite out.
Always great before or especially after theater. They don’t rush to turn over tables. Service is great
They are currently running a limited menu because of kitchen issues. This has been ongoing for awhile now. Come on Joe Allen... fix it!!!
Outstanding as always. We have eaten there many times - it is our favorite restaurant when we are in the city.
Joe Allen is one of our favorite places in the Theater District. Despite making repairs in the kitchen, the food was as good as ever. Our server - Jeffrey - was fantastic.
Based on this visit, I would not recommend Joe Allen. However, having been there dozens of times over the years, I would like to think that this last visit is an outlier. I was called earlier in the day to confirm the reservation, which I did, and nothing else was said. When we arrived, it turned out that they were operating without gas and only had a limited menu, which seemingly had been going on for a while as they were prepared with alternate menus etc. The restaurant should've informed me of that earlier the same day when they called me to confirm the reservation for that night. I find it shady that they did not do so, knowing that once we were in the restaurant for a late dinner, we would be unlikely to turn and leave. I ordered my usual roasted chicken, which was on the "limited menu"; it was not good and poor presented; it was more like something I would expect at a catered affair.
Sehr guter burger! Service gut aber auch einfordernd, wenn es um den Tip geht! Manuelle Rechnung war falsch!
Always a treat! Staff went out of their way to accommodate us when we were late arriving post-theatre and kitchen was closing at 11:45 p.m. and we came with more people than our reservation and this wasn't a problem at all for the staff. The service was excellent and food was consistent, as usual.
Just the best. Fave place in NY. Due to the people who work there and the atmosphere they help create. The best!!!
Always my favorite pre theater dinner place. Menu is small and constantly changing. Good simple American fare. Perfect for sitting in a theater afterwards.
Tried JA for its star offering - pre-theater dinner. We were in and out in 45 minutes....so had more than enough time before curtain. My teenage dates both really liked their burgers...so much so that they mentioned it to their parents the next night.
Great great after theater dnner location. Must do to talk theater over good food.
Great location for pre-theatre dining. Menu limited due to kitchen renovation, but we knew that going in. Great, friendly service.
They had a limited menu due to a pipe repair, so this rating is skewed.
The restaurant is lovely. We had a party of 6 dining before the show. This restaurant was recommended my a NY local. We were looking for a restaurant that had plenty of options for everyone however, the current menu is shortened due to kitchen limitations. That was disappointing however, the service was amazing. The food was ok. Not my favorite restaurant in the city but, it worked for a pre-show dinner. When I’m back in the city I will give the restaurant a 2nd try when the full menu is back in full effect.
Pre Theater dinner was great
I had been there years ago. still as good. Although some entrees were not available due to the kitchen being renovated... but I thoroughly enjoyed the place.
Awesome lunch! Never disappointed!
Sadly, Joe Allen is experiencing a utilities issue, and many of their staple menu items are not available! no steak frites! no meatloaf! Hopefully, this will be resolved in a months time... Good luck!
Nice wait staff and good food. We got to see a little of the first set of music. Only bummer was they had some electrical issues so no lights on bathrooms and we had to pay cash, which was inconvenient, for them too I’m sure
Extremely disappointing. Items on the website menu are not on the limited menu in the actual restaurant. We were told by our server that it was their "slow season" and that is why the menu was so small. Their website should reflect that, very misleading. When we asked if something we saw on the online menu could possibly be made (because that is what brought us there) we were just told "No" . It could not be done and our server refused to ask the kitchen. Our server was very uncooperative and not accommodating at all with much too much eye rolling. He acted as if we were bothering him. We inquired if they cooked on a charcoal grille as someone in our party is allergic, he answered "yes". So we asked if the burger could be cooked in a pan, to which he replied "No" with some crazy song and dance explaination that made no sense. At that point, we asked another server pasding by if the grille was charcoal. He confirmed it indeed was not. At this point, we asked to change servers. The food was horrible as well. I wish we would have left as soon as we saw the ridiculously limited menu.
Limited menu because of gas line problems. Still a reliable pre-theatre restaurant.
Joe Allen's is a NYC favorite of ours, and normally we would recommend it highly. While we're happy the recent gas leak issue hasn't closed it altogether, the limitations it has put on the menu -- and the kitchen's backward way of dealing with this -- mean we'll wait until things are back to normal (which I hope they'll announce loudly) until coming back. The servers are always full of personality and on top of things, so no problem there. But when we were craving the fries, it was one of the standards they currently cannot prepare, and only offer "steak fries", and would not even allow these as a sub for mashed potatoes with the chicken (the server checked and was shut down). The kitchen also wouldn't permit a side order of the "steak fries"; they'll only serve them with the hamburger. So we got hamburgers (not the delicious chicken I'd been looking forward to), only to have FOUR small potato wedges arrive with it, piled artfully like a hashtag. It seems they're also skimping on the delicious bread. I'd suggest management simply reprint their paper menus without the items they can't prepare sufficiently, adding a note explaining that the issue it temporary...(we hope, because as mentioned, Joe Allen's has been a must at least once, on every trip, but introducing someone to their menu / shortcomings in this state simply means they won't come back, and we REALLY hope they don't fail because of it.)
Kitchen was under construction so they had a limited menu. Restaurant/Open table should have informed us.
Old timey place but food was good, and you could actually talk and hear your tablemates!
I like WARM chicken, NOT room temperature chicken in my salad.
A very non-vegetarian friendly restaurant. Not a single vegetarian item on the entree menu. If you are a vegetarian or a vegan stay away.
