Great service but food not so good. The octopus was soggy, rubbery, and had an aged seafood taste I did not eat as it was not freshly grilled. Rice was crunchy with the Jack Fruit Curry but the jack fruit had a good flavor and the place was cold with all windows and doors open at night with an avg temp outside at 55. We won’t be back.
They were out of bacon, milk and carnitas for Sunday brunch...
Great food. Had two appetizers, brussel sprouts and brie. Both really good. Had a special dinner for restaurant week. The included scallops were very good as was the mousse dessert.
Awesome restaurant- don’t let being attached to the hotel fool you. They have fresh and delicious food options. The hummus with beets is AMAZING! Plenty if metered street parking and is one of my Favs when I am in town !
Thank you for taking the time to give us such a lovely review. For future reference, we do validate if you chose to use the Courtyard parking lot, so you won't have to worry about feeding those pesky meters. We do hope that you will be dining with us again in the near future.
Upon entering the restaurant, the host was extremely backed up with reservations and walk-ins. We stood there for at least 10 minutes before being asked our name for our reservation. We sat at the bar while we waited for our table. We looked over the bar menu and decided to forfeit our table and to just dine at the bar. The bartenders were extremely busy and rushed. We ordered a round of drinks, waters and 3 appetizers. The queso fundido was brought out without Gusto bread and when we asked the bartender if it should be served with bread he replied “no”. We asked someone else and they said yes it should be and they brought us some extremely dry gusto bread. I frequently buy Gusto bread and they are doing them a huge disservice by serving old/dry Gusto bread. The truffle fries were delicious. The queso wasn’t good and the mushrooms were slimy. We sat there waiting to order another round of drinks, but the bartenders did not acknowledge us. We flagged them down to get our bill and left. We were really excited to try their food after hearing great things, but were extremely disappointed.
Delicious skirt steak, cooked perfectly, the salmon was delicious, and that cauliflower appetizer? I have been dreaming about it! Great cocktails, excellent service. A real gem in downtown Long Beach.

Great brunch! Bottomless mimosas were outstanding. Disappointed they removed Shakshuka from the brunch menu, but the sauce itself is included in the Huevos Rancheros which is an outstanding dish.
It’s always a great experience at James Republic. Service was a little slow but very friendly. Food is always superb.

This is my second review of James Republic located within the Courtyard Marriott in Long Beach Downtown. I stayed at the hotel for a business meeting so the restaurant was convenient for me. I enjoyed my dinner at James Republic the night before and was dining alone, so I figured I'd go again for the same dish I ordered the night before. Unfortunately, it was quite a different experience this time. I was approached by the bartender if I wanted a drink and he took my order. Close to an hour later, I received my dinner, but only after I inquired why it was taking so long. I'm sure they forgot about me. It was pretty clear that my dish was hastily thrown together, the amount of food was considerably less and really didn't have any flavor to it. After sitting there for an hour twiddling my thumbs and then tasting it, I asked to have it boxed up as I just didn't want to sit there anymore. I got back to my room, took a few bites and threw the bland food in the trash, $30 wasted. I'll still recommend this place, because I just had a crappy server who didn't care, hopefully it'll be different for someone else. It's interesting how important a good server is to a good customer experience.

James Republic is located inside the Courtyard Marriott Long Beach Downtown at 500 east 1st street. They have a comfy bar scene, but are slim on the draft beer choices, but they have a good selection of bottled beer and the usual wine selection as well. Dinner was very good. I had braised short ribs over freshly made pasta with mushrooms, an unusual combination, but very tasty. My server was great and attended to our table with just the right amount of care. This is a farm-to-table type restaurant with very fresh food, give it a try.

Christmas outing with friends but there was hardly any Christmas décor not even Holiday music. Whomever cleans the restaurant really needs to learn how to dust properly. We were sat in a booth which around the perimeter of the booth was covered in dust and cobwebs yes I said cobwebs!!! Waitress was mediocre I asked a couple questions about the liqueur’s in some of the drinks and she didn’t' t know her cocktail menu not to mention it took forever to get our drinks. Food was good but probably won’t be back.

I love going to James Republic. I was just sad that there was no cranberry sauce or anything cranberry with the traditional Thanksgiving dinner they served that day.
The food was amazing. Highly recommend butternut squash soup and scallops.
Ugh one waitress for about 12 tables. The restaurant was so cold. The service was really slow.
It was recommended to us. The food does not taste very fresh. More mediocre. Kind of disappointed.
It's one thing to mess up an order, and fix it... but it's another thing altogether to be given a chance to fix it and then not fix it, and then a third... with the same unresolved result. Between the waiter, the cook and the "supervisor" Leo, you would think that they could deliver a properly cooked medium rare cheeseburger... but you would be wrong. Time for management to clean house.

This was our second visit to the restaurant. We enjoyed the items on menu. Everything was well prepared and presented in a timely manner. We missed son of the items from first visit, yet overall very pleased and recommend this place highly!
I have never written a bad review and I tend to just let things go even when at the restaurant but since you sent email to review I will.
First when we get there the hostess was unfriendly and non smiling. the waitress was very friendly and attentive but couldn't answer any of our questions about the menu. Appetizers were oysters and cheese plate. the pieces of cheese were soooo little for the price. the oysters were ok but they served with cocktail sauce that was old. It was so gelled you couldn't even stir it. When asked what it was she took it back and someone came out and told us it was old. So it had been sitting in a ramekin for who knows how long. The spare ribs were the worst we have ever had, they were so tough it was hard cutting with a knife let alone chewing. The octopus was also tough. Lastly, on open table I had put it was a birthday celebration. I had called before we went to make sure and there was nothing written about it so the girl wrote down birthday dessert for daughter in law. But nothing was said for brought. I know I went on and on but felt if you are asking you should know how it was. I am not asking for anything because we truly do not want to go back there.
The menu is not extensive but that is not a negative: there is something for everyone. The flank steak was outstanding; my sister had scallops she also loved. Kory was our server and offered insight that helped us on our choices. Loved the open air dining...noise level was a tad on the loud side because a large party with small children was near. Would definitely recommend.
Was really great. Met family for brunch and was excellent in every way. I had the Fried Chicken Benedict which I will be attempting to recreate at home. Always have a great time at James Republic.
What a joke. 28 dollars for a steak that wasn’t even three ounces. A $25 charcuterie plate of supermarket salami. A Cobb salad that was all lettuce, and a burger that arrived 20 minutes late. Service so abysmal that the server couldn’t even describe any of the menu items, and I had to ask the greeter to track down the burger. I’m gonna keep it simple - skip it. A $200 waste of money and time.

I am saying I would recommend only because I've had good meals there before and so I consider this meal an anomaly. However, the service has remained, since it first opened, inconsistent and while pleasant, not at a high quality restaurant level. My friend and I were baffled at some of the choices the waitstaff made.
Our new Downtown LB favorite. Delicious cheese board, spicy and earthy roasted cauliflower, and mouth-watering skirt steak. Paired with genuine good service, this was a perfect date night location!

Fantastic location with a great vibe. We had a late lunch so it was quieter than it would be at peak times. Decent brasserie style food and a good bottle of wine. Enjoyed.
It was a date night with my wife. Everything was excellent, the only thing I was a little not happy with was the fact they got rid of the Riesling wine off their menu.
I made reservations at the last minute and there was space (high 5 to me). It was a cloudy day. Had checked the online menu before arriving. I met a good friend there who was in LA for the weekend.
We both had the fried chicken benedict which is creamy/spicy sriracha sauce over a piece of very crispy fried chicken (YUMMY and spicy too!) on top of a poached egg. It came with a small salad. Everything was good. The sparkling rose' was out so we went with another rose. Nice, light wine.
We liked the chicken so much that my friend ordered another piece of chicken as a side order. It was *that good* No dessert- we were too full. I got my half of breakfast packed up to go. We were there for a couple of hours. The server was pretty good but she missed some things. I asked for additional water since we had run out. I don't recall being asked for coffee after brunch dishes were cleared. As we realized that we had been there a while - try over 90 minutes, we had to ask her for the check and that took a bit of waiting to get her attention. Food was great, wine was great. Service initially was good, after we ate, it was almost non-existent.

Menu was a little odd for 2:15pm on Mother’s Day, but everything on it was delicious.
Love open airy seating and lighting. Food was fresh and flavorful but priced to match (not cheap). Nice strong martini verses some places that water down my drinks.
Brunch starts on time at 10:30. Bottomless drinks can be mixed. Excellent customer service.
