this was my second time dining here. I brought a group of out-of-town guests and they thoroughly enjoyed the food and atmosphere.
My husband and I tried Il Forno with his niece and boyfriend before theater. Tables other than for two along the sides are arranged in long rows down the middle, so very casual and rather tight. This is not fine dining, nor did we expect it. We were, however, happily surprised by the freshness of the salads we tried ( one beet, one apple and Gorgonzola), the thin crispy crusts on the pizzettes - one is certainly enough for two moderate eaters, with a shared salad to start - and the generous and fresh toppings. We tried the pepperoni and the mushroom. Service was attentive and we made our play with time to spare, despite a late start to the dinner. Definitely a find, especially for those who, having paid the earth for theater tickets, would like a more reasonably priced meal.
Before going to see Tina Turner Musical around the corner. My second time dining there.
Food was outstanding. Service was good, but a little slow for the pretheater timeframe.
If I were to rank the service solely based on our waiter I would rate it a five, he was great. But we were one of several groups of diners that had reservations that either were not honored or were seated well beyond the time of our reservation. They clearly overbooked by a lot, and didn’t have the customer service skills to handle it in a proper professional manner. This was extremely frustrating as we confirmed our reservation the day before and we had a large party, including my sister-in-law who was running the marathon the next day. The hostess was very overwhelmed.
Very good prefixe dinner before theater. Very reasonable price.
If you'd like to sit for 30 minutes with no sevice, this is the place for you! I waved over the hostess after sitting for 15 minutes and asked her to order a bottle of wine while we waited for a server (all servers and staff were in one tiny corner behind the bar tripping over one another) and sadly, 15 more minutes went by and no wine, no server. Place next door is great, though!
Omar was great
Pretheater - did the trick - excellent service
Seated promptly at nice table. Good for date nights and pre-theater. Service was ok. Food came out quickly.
The only reason I didn't rate Il Forno with 5 stars is not related to the food, service, or ambience, all of which were great, although it is noisy when full, as it was when we were there. I downgraded it a star because of their policy to not answer phone calls with a person. I had a special request, but could not talk with anyone. The recorded message on the phone directed me to send them a text or go to their website. I did both and explained my request in detail, but got no response. When I arrived at the restaurant I complained to the manager about my experience and made my request to her in person. She was very apologetic about the lack of responsiveness of the phone/text/website. She was able to honor my request. She was a lovely person and very professional. The meal and the service at the restaurant were terrific. We were there on Tuesday, October 15th. We will definitely return the next time we are in NY.
Third time dining here during our visit. Consistent, delicious meals. Lunch and dinner are both excellent. Friendly waiters. Quickly seated and food quickly brought out. Large portions!
Highly recommend: Chicken Parmesan, Vodka Penne, Margherita Pizza, Caesar Salad, Fettuccini Alfredo, and the Burrata appetizer.
Our waiter was fun and professional. The restaurant is really pretty and since the weather as beautiful, we were seated near the front open window/doors. The food was very good- a couple of us had the prix fix and others ordered from the menu. I had a salad with pears and blue cheese that was delicious. Then I shared a pizza (more like a flatbread) with a friend that had wonderful mushrooms and lots of cheese. I also tasted the Margareta pizza , which was delicious if you wanted red sauce. We all were pleased and even the wine by the glass was voted more than OK by the 5 who enjoyed a glass. (both red & white for $8)
Will return if in theatre district again.
Very slow service, good food
Nice place for somewhere located so central. The set menu was good value and we enjoyed our evening. The service could have been a little better
Not a beautiful restaurant at all. Food was passable but not great
We found Il Forno on the internet and the location was perfect. It was a wonderful find. The food was very good and the service was excellent. We will return there again when going to the theatre.
Always a pre-theater treat!
Very pleasant place to stop in, but our food was overcooked and bland. Salad and vegetables were very tasty. The cheesecake was delicious. Service was terrific.
Nice restaurant in convenient location on 8th Ave near theaters. Very good pasta and delicious roasted cauliflower salad. “Pizzetee” more if a flat bread.
What was described as Chicken Marsala was an entire boiled/steamed breast on bone with little taste. What little sauce there was had been poured over orzo. A very disappointing meal in preparation and taste.
Great food and service
Great food and great server in Omar! Had him 3 yrs ago when I came last and was fortune enough to get him again! Bravo...counting the next days for the next visit.
Pizza was a little soggy with too much cheese although pepperoni's were good. Penne all Vodka was good and sauce was perfect. No bread was offered which is unusual for an Italian place.
Great pre-theatre restaurant. Good food, reasonable prices, fast service. I would spend the extra money and not get the house wine. While Italian in style, they get you in and out a lot faster than any restaurant in Italy would.
It was great food and very traditional Italian. Open doors made it feel like we were dining outside but it was very noisy. The chairs are small and uncomfortable
Delicious food and decent service. Great location near the theater district.
Great place on 8 th Ave fir ore theater. Nice waiters. Great pizza and easy for pre theatwr
One fish was tasteless and other was very salty
I go here a lot and love it
Ordered the chicken marsala on the prix fix menu, which is a good value. It was tasty, but could have used more mushrooms. Service was good. I strongly suggest a reservation, this is not a big place. Would go back.
My Open Table reservation for three people was for 6 pm. Two of us arrived at 5:55 and I let the woman at the door know we were there. She seemed a little off put and informed me that there would would be at least a 15 minute wait before we would be seated. However, I saw that she had seated a group who had just arrived without a reservation, before me at the table which clearly should have been for me. The food was okay. The bill came and I gave the waitress my credit card. The receipt came back and upon looking at it carefully, I realized I was given a bill almost $50 more than it should have been. I called the waitress back and pointed it out to her. It was fixed with an apology. However, based on how this meal began and ended, I doubt I will return.
Food was very good, will definitely return!
We were seated upon arrival for our reservation no issues there. The food was excellent and the portion size was huge. The pizzas were great and they were very accommodating on the kids meals. My only complaint was it was very hot in the restaurant and we sat fairly close to the pizza oven. Other then the heat “and it was a 100 degree day in Ny” our experience was great and wouldn’t hesitate to eat there again.
Second time there ... just as good as first time ...
I have come here on a number of occasions and always have a nice meal. The prices are reasonable for the neighborhood and my reservation is always ready. thank you; we will be returning!
The restaurant did not accept my open table reward points. No explanation why not. Much too busy to try to get a manager to come to the table.
From the greater not understanding my English, to the pizza oven making it very hot in there, and the pot smoke smell everytime someone opened the door, to being part of the bar next door, to 1 waiter for the entire room. Wasn't worth the price for the experience or food, for me. It looks nice, though. Close to theaters. Everything else was booked.
Was a great place to eat close to theater district. My only complaint was it was super humid and they had their patio open, so no inside seating. Was slightly warm for a HOT New York day!
Close the the theater district and the Port Authority. Casual but food was great and a full bar !
