Grotto is a neighborhood restaurant for me (aren't I lucky?). They stayed open during the worst days of the pandemic and their garlic soup and beef tenderloin with risotto saw me through. The service is always lovely, the food always top notch. The room itself is charming. It's one of those restaurants that manages to be romantic, fun, good for a small group or fine to go in by yourself for a quiet treat.

I love this place. It has a very romantic, rustic feel and the food is delicious. From the little time I spent in Italy, I find this place spot on. I would say the service was a little slow. No one was at the host table when we arrived and, yet, they got a little upset when we seated ourselves. But, I really toss this up to covid and them, possibly, being short-staffed (like the rest of us). I would recommend eating here and plan to go back.

NYE dinner. My sweet potato ravioli app was spot on, as was my pan-seared halibut. My wife’s spaghetti and meatballs was a bit over-seasoned, very heavy on the oregano. This has been noted in other reviews. The starter of bread and EVOO is a nice touch. Tasty Old Fashioned cocktail was classic and the by the glass Chardonnay was a generous pour. Service is attentive. I will return.

Excellent food and service. Tenderloin and Beef wellington were both cooked to perfection. The beet salad with goat cheese was very good. Staff was very attentive and upbeat.

My daughter and I went on a quick trip to Boston. Made reservations for Grotto the day before based on the menu and reviews.

We were not disappointed. The truffle risotto was excellent as was the gnocchi with short rib (although the Gorgonzola seemed to be missing )

Would visit again.

Main courses and starter were ok but not great. The ravioli were good, the beef Wellington was not the best cut and was rare not medium rare. 1/4 of it was too gristly to even cut with steak knife. The rest was ok, ended up just eating the edges. First course of crispy Brussels we’re just topped with bacon and cheese and broiled. Tiramisu is a waste of money. Small sundae cups and hard lady fingers. The gal serving us was not personal, provided little to no recommendations. All said and done instill love the experience of eating here but as the prices are not much less than Tresca and food there is far Superior. I hope they remember that they are a higher end restaurant and don’t just continue to ride the ambiance and past review hype. I will try again but with reservation. Bummer, was indeed my favorite restaurant 4 years ago.

The best, coziest, romantic Italian restaurant in Boston. We come here every time we’re in town. They have an app with steak and a cheesy truffle sauce , omg.

Grotto is a favorite spot whenever I am in the Boston area. I have never been disappointed with the food. Everyone in my party of four had delicious and hearty portions of their ordered meals. Wine was delicious as well. We asked in advance to sit at one of their few booths, and this helped with conversation as the other seating is very close to other patrons and that is challenging now, not only due to it being noisier, but also due to Covid concerns. The restaurant is in a basement and when you use the one bathroom facility you get a view of the back cooking/cleaning/prep areas. Not much they can do about old pipes, etc as you are truly in a basement, but staff work hard and are very accommodating. We had a terrific server, food was served promptly yet we didn’t get any feeling of being rushed with our meals as one can in many restaurants these days. You get the sense that lots of customers are regulars at Grotto’s. I think their food is comparable or better than some of the best North End restaurants, but without the parking hassles. It’s a pretty quiet area of town at night but a short walk to the Common, which looks festive during the holiday season.

Cute and cozy little hidden gem! Our reservation was right at open, so when we first arrived it was empty and smelled a bit like the basement it’s in. But once the food started coming out all the smells were incredible. The service is excellent, probably the best we have ever had at any restaraunt. The food was very good, we had the garlic soup, Caesar salad, short rib with mashed potatoes and cheese ravioli. All were delicious! Tables are a bit small and close together due to the small size of the restaraunt so if you are on the larger side you may be a bit uncomfortable but it’s not too bad. It was a great anniversary dinner, it was a bit fancier than we are use to but still seemed somewhat casual.

I liked the vibe and the service was great but the food is just ok. The bread is so terrible I had to laugh as I’d seen other negative reviews. Do a focaccia maybe. That peasant bread is a bummer with good olive oil. And frankly the chicken parm wasn’t good. So hard and dry. Rosemary?…in chicken parm…I didn’t love it. I probably won’t be back but it’s worth a go if you’re in the area.

The food and service at Grotto is amazing. My partner and I love coming here and will come back again and again. The fondue appetizer is a must! Parking is difficult to find (like most places in Boston) so use Uber or public transportation if you can.

Absolutely loved this restaurant. We'd gone to a different Italian restaurant the night before based on a recommendation, and weren't exactly overwhelmed. Still craving Italian while in Boston, and desperate to get out of the cold, we selected the first Italian restaurant with the earliest possible reservation time, and could not have been happier with our choice. The restaurant is dark, so having to view the menu on your phone is actually a bonus here. The wine selection is excellent, and the food is superb. We'll definitely be back the next time we're in town!

Went to this Beacon hill restaurant on a relatives recommendation. Ambiance, its a cellar and not charming. Ceiling red paint and lots of electrical wires, sketchy. Central chandelier light kept dimming when kitchen appliances running. Specialty cocktail excellent and service very attentive. Beet salad very good. Mussels okay, needed more sauce to dip bread into on bottom of dish. Table bread very dense for foccacia. Husband had chicken Parmigiano very overcooked and over spiced but spaghetti undercooked . Not al dente. He returned this dish and replaced it with the (famous) meatballs, also very heavy on Oregano and dry. My dish was the ricotta filled ravioli, also to chewy but the filling was tasty. We left disappointed and won't be back. Waiter was very attentive but didn't offer to remove any charges from the check for uneaten entrees.

Terrific, intimate setting. Dinner with old friends, one visiting from out of town. Food and service were both spectacular. We shared the Fonduto, Cozze, Cavatelle and gnocchi, then the banana bread pudding and pannacotta for dessert, plus a couple of bottles of wine. Everything was delicious. Our server was professional, attentive but in no way obtrusive, and very gracious. Grotto was an excellent choice for our special evening. Thanks!

We went to Grotto in August and found the food amazing. We visited Grotto twice in November and found the food very average. The staff is amazing and the service is very quick. However, on the flip side, the place is so nice that we couldn't even hear what the person sitting across the table is saying. Hope this feedback helps the customers and the restaurant to improve the food quality.
