GATO is owned by Bobby Flay and Laurence Kretchmer who previously owned the Spanish restaurant, BOLO, together for 15 years. BOLO met an unfortunate demise when its building was torn down to make way for a new development. The partners vowed to revive the spirit of BOLO. They are thrilled to launch GATO as its next renewal.
What Insiders Are Saying
Gato will remind you why Bobby Flay became famous in the first place - because he can cook.
Everything was awesome - service, food, atmosphere. Our server was amazing. Just was thrown by how dark the bathrooms were. That was somewhat uncomfortable.
Love Bobby Flay restaurants!! Never disappointed. Loved GATO. Food, service and ambiance were superb!
It was a great experience for my wife and I as we were on our honeymoon and are BIG. Fans of Bobby Flay, watch his ‘beat Bobby Flay’ show every week!!!
I recommend Gato to anyone in New York.
Pork chop was awesome. Charred steak just ok. Cauliflower was amazing! Service was excellent. Wine was great. Little pricey. But we know we’re paying for the name. All in all a good experience.
I highly recommend and will absolutely return. Its a good date spot. My only complaint was that my seat was right next to the A/C which made for an evening that had me slightly focused on that. All in all, would and will go back.
Everything was excellent
Great experience. Our party of four arrived an hour late because I stupidly thought I had made the reservation at that time. The host could not have been nicer, and immediately accommodated us with a lovely table.
Food and ambience were wonderful
We were so excited to go to Gato! My husband and I have been to Mesa Grill many times and just recently, Shark. Both are incredible! We were excited for our kids to finally have Bobby Flay food. When we walked in, the hostess looked annoyed that we showed up for our reservation. She never made eye contact and didn't speak. It took a while for a server to greet us - then two servers seemed to not know who's table we were. Food was ok to sort of good. Not at all what we hoped for. I felt bad for my kids that this was their first time in New York and their first time at a Bobby Flay restaurant. Love him! Either the staff all hate their jobs there or I have no idea. We will not go back. PS - walking out we overheard another table saying how bad the service was. Yikes.
The $21 grilled octopus was the size of a string bean. A total rip off
Amazing food - definitely not a cheap dinner but great overall experience from the bar to the table. Would recommend for a special event or a girls night out.
Food was very good, however was overpriced for the portions... Staff was somewhat aloof. Waitress could have cared less that she spilt the PORT on my daughter... Other than a cup of seltzer, there really was no apology...
The good was absolutely outstanding , the flavors were deep yet mild,
The halibut in tomato sauce was delicious , very delicate.
Service was outstanding as well , give two thumbs up !
It was nice.. good service and staff accommodated a third wheel that joined and put two tables together after checking the reservations for that additional table.
Been here many times and was always happy with our experience. However, this was the first time we left and were still hungry after our meals. Also, the service was extremely slow. We waited more than an hour for our food. Expect more from the restaurant after spending over $500. Not sure we will go back.
Not a great vibe, impersonal and cold staff. Feels like a corporate production. Also benches all on outer tables are at least 6 inches lower than the chairs and everyone seated there looks like a child with food in front of you almost to your chin. Not comfortable.
The food at Gato is always fantastic. However, service this night was really slow. Something must have happened in the kitchen because we were waiting a long time for our entrees and then I noticed that a table next to us had received their entrees even though they came in significantly after us. When I complained to the waiter, he checked and the food came out promptly after. The Manager came over and apologized and comped out entrees. While an apology would have been sufficient, I'm glad the Manager was proactive.
Rude matre di. Inattentive waiter decent food. What else can i say. So many other better places that will treat you like a real person.
Food was good, service great but, and this is important, it was just too loud for me.
The food was fantastic! Our disappointment came with refills of coke & soda water, that ended up being a charge per refill, with no mention from the server.
Portions are small. No bread arrived. Everything. A la carte. Chicken was good. Some sides were too sweet.
Took my kids there and they loved it! The food felt a little mass produced for the price to me. Lighting was crazy dark, cannot see your food very well. The booths were comfy and a pleasant surprise.
They don’t leave the wine bottle at the table so you have to wait for a refill (maybe a NY thing?) So at times my glass was empty for a bit and I was worried we wouldn’t get to finish our $60 bottle of wine. I found the menu pretentious, serve veggies with the entrees and up the price a bit if needed. There were no specials which is odd during summer? The entrees were pretty good, loved the wine. We are pretty hard to please as we are from Portland where really good restaurants are smaller, fresher, and more innovative with their offerings. The waiter was very nice and gave us some tips (had we all ordered veggie sides we would not have finished and left wasted food on the table.). This was the most expensive meal I have ever had, which makes sense in NY. It was about $80 a head pretax/pretip if you get a cheaper wine and a dessert or veggie. I probably won’t return, but maybe as my kids thought it was the best meal they have ever had. I guess it’s time to take them to LePigeon in Portland!
My waitress was Emma She was absolutely great she had 2 guys working with her I believe they were busboys I’m not sure they were absolutely great everything was on point. I never been so satisfied. The food was great my son was happy and I would like to thank them for making my sons birthday experience special
Great service, great food. I will definitely go back with a bigger group.
We loved this brunch so much - the food was incredible - we had the oven baked eggs and almond encrusted French toast. Dessert was amazing! Great drink choices and service. The bathroom was very dark! We highly recommend!!!
Great food waiter was very helpful. Love this place
We had a lovely dinner. The food was very good and the service was wonderful. My only complaint was that it was very dark and hard to read the menu. Numerous dinners needed to use the flashlights on their cellphones.
Delicious food in a great setting with fantastic service. Always wanted to try a Flay restaurant and was not disappointed!
Had a great time. We wanted to eat at a Bobby Flay restaurant during our NYC visit. This did not disappoint. We went on a Monday which was great because it was not over crowded.
For appetizers we had the crushed pea & avocado which was really good. Our son, a picky eater, had the roasted octopus and thought it was great.
For entrees we had the steamed halibut and also the rabbit, again both were great, extremely well executed.
Our server, Dash, was awesome. He had great suggestions and it was very comfortable, we never felt rushed.
I know Bobby is not big on desserts but the tiramisu was a highlight...just wish we could have walked away with the recipe.
Burrata was excellent...: the halibut was bland and the roasted cauliflower was flavorful. He would be chopped for serving that...have loved meals at other Bobby restaurants in nyc, Vegas and Mohegan. It surprised why the room was only 1/2 full.
I am a Bobby fan .... gato just not reflective tonight of his skill , game and reputation.
This was my second time dining at Gato.
The service was excellent and the food was amazing. I would definitely fine there again.
Exceptionally slow and unfriendly service. Incredibly overpriced. Food was okay but nothing exceptional.
Food here is excellent, service was as well (though waiter was initially slow taking our order and food was VERY slow coming out, good thing we weren't in a hurry). Wine steward terrific, lots of excellent veg options (and I'm not a veg). Don't remember it being so dark, ambiance could stand an upgrade.
We were eager to try Bobby Flays cooking to see if the hype was founded. It was. The food was outstanding, creative and memorable
Our only complaint was that there was an inordinate delay between the appetizer and receiving the entree; probably waited over 30 minutes after finishing the appetizer
Unrelatedly we were only let down that we did not get to meet Mr Flay as was not there and had been in the restaurant the night before:(
Disappointing experience. Our server was very slow and completely inattentive. I had to get his attention to order a second beer, and he never offered my wife a second glass of wine when he did check back before our entrees were delivered and her glass was empty. I ordered a pork chop that was seriously undercooked (it looked like ahi tuna). We were headed to a show after dinner, and because our server was so slow to check back, I did not have an opportunity to order a replacement (I actually had to tell the busser of the issue when he came to clear the table since our server was not around). The manager apologized (after being told of the issue by our busser rather than the server because the server hadn't checked back after our food was delivered) and did not charge us for the pork chop. She indicated that she would have liked to buy us dessert if we had time, which we did not at that point since the service was so slow. All in all a not great experience. I have been to several of Bobby Flay's other restaurants and have always had great service and great food. Disappointed this time.
Will be back for sure! They were very accommodating and the quality of the food and drinks was outstanding
Amazing creative cuisine! Delicious and beautifully presented ! Loved every bite !
Vacation in Nyc and meeting up with local family
This was our second time eating at Gato. The food was very good. I definitely would recommend what we ate; fried chicken entree, mushroom appetizer, pepper with the tuna tartare. We also had the corn which is always awesome (we went to Mesa several times for the corn and rogue chipotle beer) cauliflower and potatoes which were very well prepared and presented. The only thing was was “ok” was our server. We actually had an invitation to BBP for their free burger of the month at the smith haven mall location but unfortunately could not make it We live on Long Island and had a doctors appointment in Manhattan today, which is why we are there today. Love Bobby Flay and will be back.
Service was attentive. Food was great. Glad to see some vegetarian options. Had the roasted cauliflower which had so much flavor, including mint and Fresno chilli. Also had the asparagus and pea pizza. Enjoyed the paella, especially the bits of crispy rice. Dessert of pistachio olive cake was good. Bobby Flay was at the restaurant and working in the kitchen! The space was nice, a bit noisy, however tables were not overcrowded. A good meal for our last day in NYC
