Foghorn Brewery was born of a dream to make craft beer the way it ought to be made—from grain to glass all under one roof.The historic building in King Street had been abandoned for several years when we first set foot inside. In that dusty old warehouse, we saw the potential to create something really special.And so it was that Newcastle’s first modern craft brewery opened its doors in April 2015. The town’s industrial roots have played a big part in shaping the unique character of Foghorn Brewery. Built from the ground up, this art deco era warehouse with exposed roof trusses now houses a custom 1800 litre brewery.

Instead, you’ll need to text a special code to a number on the wall and a host will open the door and usher you inside. Rest assured, it’s worth the effort, having just won Best Regional bar in Australia 2016.Once inside, you’ll discover a moody, eclectic cocktail bar with an urban edge. Exposed brick walls and dark timber are complemented by dim lighting from vintage chandeliers. Holding fewer than 60 guests, it’s this old world ambience that sets Coal & Cedar apart from Newcastle’s bar scene.Ethan and Ryan are the team behind the venture. In 2014, they packed their bags and moved from Sydney to the state’s largest regional city to work on their new dream bar. They found the perfect site on Hunter Street, which was just dingy enough to house a Prohibition-style speakeasy. Transforming the space with taxidermy, eccentric images and many a bottle of booze.

    Had a fantastic night at Hao Chi and it won't be our last visit. The salt and pepper oysters were outstanding — perfectly crisp and full of flavour, a great way to kick things off. The Mongolian lamb was the star of the show though; tender, well-spiced and exactly what you want from a quality Chinese kitchen. Fried rice done right — simple, but spot on. What made the night was the service. Kent looked after us brilliantly from start to finish — attentive without being overbearing, and genuinely warm. That kind of hospitality makes all the difference. Great food, great service, great night out. Highly recommend Hao Chi if you're looking for authentic Chinese dining in Newcastle. We'll be back.

    They went out of their way to make sure I had something to eat when I had a medical issue. My husband had one of the best chicken sandwiches he’s ever had. We will be back.
