The Evening Star Cafe is a rollicking neighborhood gem located in the heart of Del Ray. Opened in 1997, Evening Star is well known for its friendly vibe and convivial setting and continues to shine with a fiercely loyal crowd. Led by Executive Chef Jonathan Till, we combine friendly, gracious service with a seasonal, American menu featuring produce grown on our rooftop garden and by local farmers throughout the region.

The Evening Star also offers a stunning array of nearly 1,500 wines, all of which are available next door at Planet Wine Shop. Our bars, The Majestic Lounge and the No. 9 Lounge, each offer a total of 20 craft draft and cask beers, plus plenty of room to gather with friends.

As always the food was fine. O ur drink service was a little slow but otherwise welcoming. My only concern with ES is the noise level. We usually try to go there on off-peak times which helps spmewhat.

My duck was superb. The farro and brussel sprout confit was wonderful. Compliments to the chef.
My husbands chickery chicken dish was only so so. Next time he sould try the pork dish wich looked great.

Food was tasty but the service was very slow. We had to wait about 45 minutes for our dinners. Then, 2 of the 6 dinners were stone cold on arrival.
Management apologized and comped the 2 cold ones.
Still, we won't hurry back.

The food seemed a bit uneven to me, We started with 2 snacks but my nieces beef cheeks sauce was tasty but the pasta it self was limp & bland. My stuffed pasta Agnoltti was the star of the evening.

Had a late reservation 9:00. Had to wait half hour in bar and my specialty drink was flat. Once we were seated, our waiter was not happy; bad mood? Tired? Not sure but not very excited to see us. Never smiled. Food took forever. I loved my flatiron steak. Absolutely the best. Potatoes that came with it were delicious. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meal. We wanted to try apple crisp/tres leche dessert and asked waiter if it was big enough for 4 to sample. He said we should order 2. The dang thing was a HUGE! Not happy he misled us and we had to box most of it up. Think he was padding the bill. Husband says he won’t come back due to waiter and long wait. I’ll definitely be back but earlier. Hopefully get a different waiter.

Surprisingly poor choices for vegans. Chef said he was going to prepare something special specifically but then gave me something different that basically tasted like microwaved vegetables watery and bland. The promised risotto was not delivered but I ended up with a bowl of salty barley. I can order items without cheese easily enough - that would have been worlds better.

Really enjoyed getting to pick our wine out at the store located next to/within the restaurant.

Atmosphere is very cozy and welcoming.

All the food was perfect. Really enjoyed the cabbage salad and the duck 2 ways.

We had such a great time at Evening Star celebrating our friends' birthdays. Our server Ashley was wonderful. Highly recommend - fantastic little neighborhood gem.

The cafe is such a quiet little setting. It's perfect for a date night. The waiter was very helpful with his recommendations.

Food was other worldly. Chef Jonathan personally present three of his signature dishes. I have been dining at evening star for 6 years and the food is now at a whole another level under Chef Jonathan .

The food was scrumptious, from the appetizer through the dessert. Our waitress Sam was knowledgeable and warm.
The bar tender was excellent providing information about a great variety of beer. Price was great.
Will definitely return!

Each visit has a different menu since the chef works with seasonal items. The starter mushroom bruschetta was amazing. Did not care for the beef port jelly on the chicken pate. The pork chop and the beef cheeks and rolls were truly inspired. Not as jazzed with the apple crisp style dessert but it was interesting. Recommend a reservation even early evening on a weekday. Always something truly amazing coming out of the kitchen.

We really enjoyed our dinner at the Evening Star Cafe. All of the food that we ordered was tasty, from the chicken fried oysters, garlic hummus and fried cauliflower that we had for appetizers to the salmon and sea bass that we had for entrees, and the service was great. We'll definitely return.

Our first time at Evening Star, which we had heard about in very favorable terms. Comfortable booth seating; warm and effective service from Roberto; a good variety of fresh, creatively prepared plates of all sizes. Reasonably priced as well. We will return!

Great meal in cool place. Food was good but I'm a meat and potatoes guy and I passed on some things due to the sides being a bit eclectic for.my taste. But what I landed on (porkchop) was great. Service good and homey and not a bother. Ate there twice in one week ... very pleased. OH ....the bar/lounge was awesome. Our reservation was after 8pm so we hung out a bit ... fun.

Great little gem in a cute neighborhood of Alexandria. The food was amazing, and the servers were attentive but didn't hover. The decor was very whimsical as well, and a good conversation starter! We went for restaurant week and were thoroughly impressed - some other restaurants seem to cut corners during restaurant week, but everything was superb. I look forward to going back!

Our server was extremely personable and attentive. There was a great deal of energy throughout the restaurant. My wife and I went for restaurant week and it was a spectacular deal. We were able to choose from any appetizer, entree, and desert. The food was very good. I had the fryed oysters and they were balanced between salt, fat, acid, and heat. The duck and risotto were good. The duck breast fat was well rendered and a crispy skin, but a tad past medium rare. I wish there was a pronounced sauce to give the dish more pop. There is a wonderful selection of beers to choose from. Overall, a very good meal and we will be back.

You can have a drink at the upstairs lounge bar and then have a nice dinner in the restaurant. The sea bass was delicious. The apple dessert as well.

Really enjoyed my meal here. The entrees are tasty and very good, but not overly complicated. The menu is a reasonable size - enough to provide for a good range of options, but not so many that you worry if they can do all of the menu items well. My only critique is that the only main course that was vegetarian on my night, at least, was quite heavy - lentils and squash with pita. Don't get me wrong, it was tasty, but on balance very heavy and some other veggies would have balanced it out more. Super cute vibe and a nice little bar to wait in before your reservation.

We very much enjoyed our recent dinner here during Restaurant Week: excellent food, solicitous service, and a generous Restaurant Week menu offering everything that was on the regular one. The experience has restored our faith in this restaurant which we previously thought had deteriorated over the years.
