Dafni Greek Taverna
Great place for pre-theater. A relative bargain and the food is good and filling.
What a great find! Delicious food so close to the Broadway theaters. I will go again.
Great authentic Greek food, wonderful staff. Perfect for a pre-show meal.
When my wife and I dined at the Dafni Greek Taverna on July 3, we had reservations for 6 pm. We arrived a few minutes early and was seated right away. Although this was not the first time we had dined at Dafni's, it was by far the most crowded occasion. The wait staff was prompt and thorough but not intrusive. My wife ordered a Greek salad, and I ordered Chicken Souvlakia. We both agreed our food was fantastic. We inquired before leaving after dinner, about the ingredients for their Greek Salad. Our waiter was quick and most happy to answer our query. My wife and I both felt that the portions of food were very generous, and we would definitely try to dine at Dafni's again whenever we venture to NYC.
The grilled octopus was excellent!
The food was mixed bad and good. The fried eggplant and zucchini with garlic dip was delicious. However, the eggplant salad appetizer tasted of mustard, a taste I did not expect in this type of dish. We could not eat it. We both ordered the mixed grill - the gyro was so dry and hard. The beef patty was tasty, but undercooked and very small. The pork souvlaki was tasty, but fatty. The rice was bland. The lemon potatoes were better. The service, however, was off the charts great. That made up for the fair food, but I won't be back.
Food and service good, good value for price and location.
Dafni is convenient for pre-theater on a block that has little else. We’ve enjoyed meals here in the past but this time the meat was extremely salty. It’s also very loud.
Dafni is my go to place for a quick dinner before theater. The servers are attentive, the menu is varied enough for everyone’s taste, the food is fresh and delicious and it is well located for Many theaters.
I am of Greek heritage and the food was extremely disappointing. There was nothing that remotely tasted authentic. The rice seemed like it was Minute Made. The vegetables were soggy and the meat over-cooked. So many other Greek choices nearby--avoid this tourist trap.
I took family who hadn't eaten here before and everyone was happy. For five of us we shared four appetizers, a Greek salad to start and then the main courses. The people are always friendly and the food great.
We have been to this restaurant several times, usually when we go to a Broadway show. This time we were very disappointed. The food my husband had was not good, Lamb to tough to eat. I had Shrimp in tomato sauce with feta cheese. Total mush, shrimp tough! When it came time to pay the bill we had a issue. I had an Open Table reward money. Open Table sent me a pre-paid Master Card that I printed out and they wouldn't take it. I brought it up on my cell phone that said it was worth $10.00 but they wouldn't use it. It was the manager that refused all. I asked him for his name and he wouldn't give it. I will never go to the restaurant again, and will tell our friends not to go.
Too loud couldn't wait to leave. Moussaka was inedible. Salads were good. Service was efficient and location was fine for our purpose.
The food is excellent, the service is excellent, and it is a hidden gem right on 42nd St. My friends and I always enjoy dining here.
Great Greek restaurant in Times Square. Great wine selection and good food.
very disappointed, would not recommend. The wait staff was very nice and so was the pia bread.
Dafni Greek Taverna is a welcome spot amongst all the fast food places in the theater district. It is a REAL restaurant, complete with waiter service and bathrooms!!! The food is very good and the service is fine. We will certainly return when we need a place near the theaters.
Out with friends prior to theater down the street. Meal was very good as was the service. My friend ordered pork chops that she wanted soft and not overdone. The manager came over and said she would not have to pay for them if they were not to her liking. They were not and he did take it off the bill....one chop was fair and the other was overdone. That was the only glitch. The Greek yogurt with honey and walnuts was divine for dessert.
Shared 2 salads with a protein....and spinach pie
Everything was delicious
Dafni serves great food at a reasonable price. The servers are always pleasant, and the tables are always full. Reservations should be made in advance. During my most recent visit the noise level was louder than what I previously have experienced.
Pre theater dining. Everything was perfectly timed except our arrival. We had gotten stuck in traffic., but it was not a problem.
Great food at affordable prices. Conveniently located in the Theater District.
Great food and place but verrry noisy......I have been there before and it was noisy but not like Tuesday night.
Really enjoyed the food. Great service
chicken souvlaki was delicious, so were the potatoes and the tzatziki. the pickles were ok but putting them into a plastic cup was tacky. the wine was delicious as well. the greek greens side was undersalted. the pita was not good. the baklava was ok. service was fast, which is good for pre theater. great place
Delicious moussaka and very friendly service in this Reasonable Greek restaurant in the Theater District.
Fabulous food, great service! We tried so many delicious dishes and they were all excellent! Spanakopita the spinach pie, Saganaki, the fried kasseri cheese , Octopodi--grilled octupus was absolutely perfect, baby lamb chops were seasoned so well. They were gracious that our party was late because of horrible traffic, and we were lucky, because the restaurant was packed!
The service was attentive but not hovering and they have a number of greek wines that are quite lovely.
I'd go back in a flash and would highly recommend.
Close to theaters but food is not good. I love Greek food, it this was bland and tasteless
I enjoyed my meal as always. Service was excellent. I ordered two appetizers and was full. The baklava was delicious.
I have dietary restrictions and called the week prior to my lunch. The person with whom I spoke told me the few items I could eat. When I arrived and tried ordering what I was told I could eat, I was informed I was told incorrectly. Even though the restaurant was dead (there was only 1 other table in use), the kitchen was not willing to accommodate me. Very disappointing. I would have been happy with some steamed vegetables but everything was prepped with oil and I can't eat oil. I will NOT be returning or recommending.
Very solid overall in terms of food, service, ambience and price.
Excellent assorted spreads appetizer with great pita triangles. Shared the grilled bronzino which was very good. Portion size was perfect. Had a side of sautéed spinach which I highly recommend but it was a bit redundant with the vegetable that came with the fish which might have been dandelion. Wished I knew but didn’t really detract overall
I will say it got quite loud but that could be a function of a Saturday crowd
Terrible service. Restaurant is open until 12am, but we showed up at 10:05 pm and were denied service because the kitchen closed at 10. What is worse is that I made reservations online for 10:30 pm....if your kitchen closes at 10 don’t allow for reservations after that time!!! That is unacceptable. Will not come back again.
I was concerned about a restaurant situated on 42nd street, as this is the heart of tourist travel in New York, but all the restaurants we know are at least decent were booked. The décor was acceptable and the service reasonably attentive and polite. However, I was right to be concerned. It is hard to screw up Greek spreads and a simple salad, but this restaurant managed to do it. The fish was probably frozen, in any case tasteless, and although I prefer underdone to overdone fish, was practically raw when first served. Our friend had the pork and said it was more or less inedible. Even the rice was kind of tasteless. There are countless for better places to eat.
perfect sot for pre theater. We were a table of 6 and then we had an addistion. No problem with accomodations; staff/ manager very helpful. Food was terrific. Loved the hummus a different take using fava beans. All were satified with meal. Will come back
Experience was 10x better than we anticipated. The appetizer sampler of 3 spreads was delicious. The vegetarian eggplant moussaka was tasty. The striped bass was a large portion. The 3-greens pies were very filling. The baklava was up there in the best we have had— not cloyingly sweet.
Originally hesitated to eat here because some reviewers complained about being rushed, rude wait staff, and filthy bathrooms. But, this was convenient to the theater,so we decided to try it. We found none of those problems. In fact, our waiter had a great sense of humor. We will be back!!
Be guided by your server, and the ask for whatever you order medium rare.
Food and service are always excellent. Prices have gone up since I was there in the fall, but still a good value.
Very nice very busy place with no noise abatement so quite difficult to converse. Charm and value.....please do something about the noise level!
Overall it was a pleasant dining experience. There were two reasons that I didn't give it five stars. I ordered the grilled shrimp which was butterflied, but with the shell and feet still on. The shells did not come off easily. I had to peel it piece by piece with both hands. Never again. Also, the bathrooms could stand to be cleaned more often.
Great food and good service.
