- AAudreyToronto / Ontario •4 reviews5.0Dined 1 day agoHy’s was one of those rare dining experiences where the atmosphere is as memorable as the food. Upon arrival, you're welcomed through the cocktail lounge, and the first thing that captures your attention is the restaurant's rich, old-world character. The dim lighting, dark wood, classic artwork in ornate gold frames, and vintage steakhouse aesthetic create a sense of stepping into another era. From there, you're guided through a narrow corridor into the main dining room, which feels like a reveal. The focal point of the space is the dramatic open charcoal grill, framed by a massive scroll-like hood where guests can watch the chefs expertly prepare steaks over live fire. Every so often, flames leap into the air, adding a bit of theatre to the experience. Despite the traditional décor, the restaurant feels vibrant rather than dated. The dining room was filled with guests of all ages, proving that Hy’s timeless style feels more iconic than old-fashioned. Our server, Andrew, was exceptional. Friendly, knowledgeable, attentive, genuinely passionate about the menu, and armed with a great sense of humour, he guided us through the experience and helped us make excellent choices. We started with the famous Cheese Toast for Two, which absolutely lived up to its reputation, followed by the Escargot, which was rich and flavourful. For mains, we enjoyed the 8oz Filet with Filet à la Hy's sauce and the 10oz New York Strip, accompanied by Sautéed Cremini Mushrooms that were a standout for us. To finish, we ordered the Bananas Foster, prepared tableside. The waiter transformed dessert into a performance, complete with a flambé presentation that was both entertaining and delicious. Between the atmosphere, attentive service, and outstanding food, it's easy to understand why Hy’s has remained a Vancouver institution for decades. The fries were addicting and the goat cheese and mushroom dip! The dip was probably my favourite. 10/10More infoCHOP Steakhouse & Bar - Coal Harbour$$$$• Steakhouse• Coal Harbour•4.3
