Friendly and warm, tasty food from southern France. Not too noisy and very pleasant experience.
Exceptional food and service
Despite advanced notice, gluten free items were very scarce. Very French, duck and foie gras predominant. Gluten free bread came very late from the freezer and some of the poorest quality I have had in a London restaurant for a long time. Steak was lovely, sorbets too sour and price very high.
Excellent food and attentive service for a business lunch. Cassoulet was great. Guests loved the veloute.
Wine was great, even though the vintage changed (with very different tastes) between bottles of the same during evening.
Main issue was the cassoulet - not good taste or texture at all. Ratatouille side dish more like tomato and onion stew!

Once I saw the menu, I was really looking forward to visiting this restaurant.
It didn’t disappoint. Everything from the food quality, to the service was really great.
The only minor negative is that food portions are enormous. Certainly not a bad thing for most. I’ll absolutely return, but probably order about half the food.

Classic french Brasserie style restaurant, and a place you'll love if you're into your duck! Food from the gascon region sand a sister restaurant to the excellent club gascon. Nice an relaxed venue, great food, service was a little too prompt as things were getting whipped away a little too quickly but that didn't detract from a great meal!

I have been meaning to try this place for ages, but I came for dinner at 7pm on a very very cold Thursday evening, and unfortunately the place was almost empty and rather cold, so the experience was probably not what it should have been. The food was good (nice croquettes to start and a tasty if small foie gras & truffle "burger" which did not contain any kind of meat patty unfortunately)... but I was in and out in half an hour. I'll try again when it is warmer and busier!
Always good to eat at Comptoir Gascon but having recently moved offices I don't find myself in Smithfield quite so often as before. It was, surprisingly, empty when we arrived, but some tables filled up later. However, sud-ouest food remained prominent - lots of duck, foie gras and even a 'Gascon Mess'. That certain something seemed to be absent this time round but I'll still return when I'm in the area...

Great place to catch up with friend. No loud music, good ambience and friendly service. Food was outstanding, really seasonal and was light and lots of vegetables. I loved my dish (the cod).
Only down side is the price.. rather expensive, but then I rarely go out without the kids, so felt like a real treat!

Comptoir Gascon disappointed somewhat this time. They did not have a reocrd of this booking! I had made a special effort to book and provided extra requests via Opentable (the meal was a special occasion). None of that worked. The restaurant was quite cold, temperature-wise. One of the few main courses (guinea fowl) was not 'on' - despite us being the second of 2 tables dining on a Saturday night (more of that later).
Among my 3 friends , piggy treats got good reviews; duck burger with fois gras got muted approval; a tiny fois gras burger type thing in what looked like a hot dog bun was well received; my lamb rump was average at best. The chips were very tasty. House red was perfectly acceptable. Desserts got overall better reviews.
I recall Comptoir Gascon as being a really tasty and interesting place to visit. Perhaps the lack of diners on a Saturday night is reflective of a slide downhill. Certainly on my experiece re this bookng, I shall not be making a detour to visit again.

I have been visiting Comptoir Gascon for several years and was not disappointed by the welcome and the first course but the main, braised lamb, was a disappointment. Quantity was good but it lacked any flavour either in the meat itself or the sauce. Most disappointing, especially as the dish came from the menu of the day.

A rare find in the City. I am impressed by the food and service, absolutely above my expectation. The dessert is also wonderful with right portion. I will recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves French food.

This was a real letdown for us - which was a surprise based on all the great reviews we'd read. I ordered the steak medium rare, when it came it was just too rare for me (should have assumed that they were cooked the french way I guess!) so I asked for it to be cooked a little more - it came back medium to well so didn't enjoy it. The 'smokey greens' were just some steamed vegetables with a dab of smoked butter on some of it. The famed chips were just standard - and a bit soggy. The worst part was that we saw a waiter carrying a meat dish and the juices/fat were running off the side.... onto the chair and jacket of one of the gentlemen at the table he was serving! On getting home we discovered that my husbands jacket also had meat juice/fat down it (it was hanging on the back of his chair). The service was friendly and efficient but the lacklustre food and sloppy service means we won't return. Should have tried a duck dish I think!
Set out of the way opposite one side of Smithfield Market, is a real gem of a place which makes you feel like you've been transported to France. Lunch for three. One had excellent ribeye steak, another had duck burger with food gras and I had the"traditional thick cut pork loin". The only disappointing one was my pork loin, since, although delicious, was cut like thick bacon- about 5mm thick. I can't really criticise the restaurant for this though - maybe my own ignorance of what this dish should be like. Dessert of proper crème before with real vanilla was sublime. £26 bottle of wine wasn't as nice as I'd hoped. Maybe you need to spend more on wine here. Would definitely go again, but choose differently.
Definitely worth a detour. Non-formulaic and slightly unconventional menu makes it a more interesting venue to try. Prices are good and affordable and the food does not disappoint. Friendly and efficient staff and a wine list with sensible prices. Want a pleasant evening meal with friends after work at a decent price and with a pleasant ambience ... come here.
