lamb stew was some of the best lamb i've ever had! bread/butter, as you would expect at a french restaurant was over the top. custom drinks were top notch and well thought out. we will return to try more of the menu!

The server was lovely and helpful but the hanger steak was very poor quality meat recognizing that hanger steak is not a great cut to begin with this was especially bad and overcooked to boot !

With so many good Downtown eating options I doubt I will return

Dining experience was fine but the food was a bit disappointing. The roasted chicken dish in particular was an odd combination of flavors with a tahini paste.

More galling was the unexpected surcharge on the bill, which is deceptive and dishonest. The price on the menu should be the price on the bill. If there is a need to raise prices in order to fairly compensate employees, then raise prices. Adding 4% onto a $30 entree makes it a $31 entree, which is unlikely to turn away potential customers. In contrast, deceptive billing is a sure way to ensure I will never return.

I hadn’t been to Church and State for years (I’ve been living out of LA) and had forgotten how delicious and carefully prepared all the dishes are. Each component of the meal is deliberate and exquisite - expensive, but truly special.

Our waiter Sam was very friendly and helpful.
The food was great and the sommelier picked a wonderful wine to compliment the food.

Our server was wonderful. We had Ahmanson tickets and were running a bit behind and he was great in serving us promptlu and paying attention to our time restraints which was much appreciated.

Our appetizers were outstanding. The leek torte incredible and the roasted beets were divine.
Overall, fantastic experience. Thank you.

We had a delicious meal and a lovely experience for a special occasion this weekend at Church & State. There were a few choices for vegetarians, and my meat eating girlfriend also found something spectacular. We are already thinking of when we can go back.

Church and State is in the arts District which is always super cool because it’s not so crowded with drunk 21-year-olds and 6 Uber’s lined up in the way of everything. The French cuisine here is total comfort food, and the menu is not the typical intimidating French menu that you cannot read. The outdoor seating is especially lovely, and Church and State always plays really good music which is a bonus!

Overall an enjoyable experience. We decided to do small plates since there was no vegetarian entree and it turned out to be a good choice. I had the sea bass which was simply prepared, clean fresh flavors. My son had noodles - very savory and delicious. The salads were nicely prepared and the dressings were light and pleasant. Pretty interior which is laid back and comfortable. Good noise level.

The previous Church and State was better.

French onion soup with bone marrow - need more cheese. Soup base was a little bland and barely warmed. Marrow was ok. Onion was way overdone.

Souffe - ok, could have used a little more vanilla ice cream.

Also, need happy hour if you want to draw in the crowd.

I won’t be coming back.

This used to be one of my favorite restaurants in DTLA. I hadn't been back in a while and was looking forward to reconnecting with fondly remembered dishes. But, alas! Most of those fondly remembered dishes are no more, and the menu was generally disappointing, as was the dinner. Nothing was terrible, but the best thing we had were the frites. We had a suspicion that this was not the restaurant it used to be as the guests were outnumbered by the staff throughout dinner. I don't think we will be back.

We had great service! Food was great.
The mixologist wasn't happy with the drink she made for me, she made another and personally served it at my table. I didn't complain about my drink, that was just her choice. The GM/sommelier came to our table to assist with a wine choice and at the end of night as he walked he saw us and took a pic of us. Just genuinely friendly.

This is a New Church & State with new owners and chef. Sadly, I miss the old Church & State, and I missed Steak Frites which is not on the new menu. My recent experience was OK. The food was good but I can't remember what we ate. The cheese board was good, I remember that. The service began well but as the restaurant got busy the service suffered. We had to look for our waiter a few times and at the end, he forgot a drink order and coffee orders. Maybe they were understaffed. It was overpriced for the food and service we received. I won't go back. There is a lot of competition in DTLA, and I don't think this version of Church & State will survive.

Love the location in the arts district setting, highly recommend sitting outside so you can have a conversation. Inside they pack the tables close and it can get loud. This restaurant is trying too hard and takes itself too seriously. A hipster place, for sure, very pretentious, a little overpriced, and with a very limited menu. We will not return, unfortunately.

Just awful food. It should be made very clear to everyone that THIS IS NOT THE OLD CHURCH AND STATE!!! New owner, new " chef".
Horrible seasoning, boring menu. The manager was lovely, and took the (incredibly over-salted) steaks off the bill, but the food was just sad.
One of our favorites is gone.

Now this is a brilliant restaurant. One one of the best I have been to in a long time. We just returned from Barcelona, and ate in several Michillin Star restaurants. Church & State holds its own among the best. And the somellier is A+. Wow!

I ordered duck, wife ordered ribeye cap. Both were utterly tasteless- aside from duck being gamey (also tough). Seemingly identical, murky brown sauce atop both dishes. Even then wouldn't have complained but waiter made the mistake of asking. Told him mine was inedible. He apologized. Manager came over. I had to ask in all seriousness: do you actually have a chef? They took the duck off the tab. Should have prefaced this by saying we scanned the menu for a long time looking for anything that sounded good. Looking around, everyone seemed to be ordering one pasta dish or french fries. Waiter said they were out of our first choices. Evidently word was out on the beef and the duck!
Wine was good.

They nickel and dime you for everything. Charged a $3 cocktail fee and a $3 "up" fee for my martini. Have never seen anything like it before. Food and service was mediocre from what I remember coming here years ago.
Will not be back. RIP church and state.
