Staff were not very polite when dealing with a complaint.
Food offered was only set menu, al a carte not offered but should have been made aware at time of booking.
Waited 45 minutes for dessert - we chose the cheese board so not sure if they were waiting for the milk to curdle. In those 45 minutes we were not asked if we wanted a drink.
Very disappointing experience. We ate mid afternoon prior to a theatre visit. The restaurant was being tidied up after lunch which did not add to the lack of ambience; it was like being at McDonald's. We were the only diners (4) Yet the food was late, cold, poorly presented and badly prepared. £200 for a lack lustre performance ...Gor to thensure Judged Hare instead!
We went with the Winter Set Menu which was excellent! Our waiter was very friendly and helpful. When we arrived, the place was almost empty but filled up a little later. Good background music but not too loud - good for conversation.
Fantastic Xmas day lunch! Service, ambience and food was brilliant!
Very nice food , however waiter didn’t give me a choice to add the service charge and put it in the card machine without asking
Was very disappointed by Chez Mal. Good poor, ambiance poor, overall poor.
Having seen the reviews we as a business group book a table. The service was extremely slow, even though we were the only people in there.
It felt from the off the staff wanted to go home.
We didn't get ask about drinks until the starters arrived.
The food was very good and some of us even skipped the starter to have dessert. Only to find at the end of the main course it wasn't offered and to be honest given the time taken to get our starter and mains 2hrs.....we couldn't risk the waste of time.
They then charged us £42 service charge which took an age to get removed.
Honestly, far too many restaurants and cafes, which are cheaper and equal in food to put up with such service.
Dreadful, wrong wine served, incorrect food served, confused staff with little/no knowledge of the menus (for example we asked twice if the fish was filleted and we were told it was - it wasn't). Incorrect bill. Highly disappointing.
This used to be a good restaurant, really gone down hill.
Farringdon has an excellent selection of restaurants and sadly this is no longer one of them.
Food was great, service was laughable. They had not heard of the Open table deal we selected, and said it expired at the end of August when we were dining on August 4th! The funniest moment was when our waiter struggled to open a bottle of wine. He was using his hands and saying something was wrong. We informed hime that he both needed to remove the seal and get a corkscrew. Someone else opened the wine The food was excellent, but I would advise some immediate staff training is required.
Good food, relax environment. Friendly staff. We tried some appetizers and 200g fillet steak. Great and tasty
We went here for my friends birthday. The food and service was good and the set menu was good value for money. A bit more ambiance (background music) would have been nice!
Food was very good - we went for the tuna rolls and cauliflower soup for starters and ribeye steak for main. Sides - mushrooms, greens and mash were fantastic. Cocktails were ok - not amazing.
Service was very poor - I'm not sure if the staff is all new but it certainly feels that way. They were very slow despite the restaurant being mostly empty, didn't know about a deal that they advertised on the website (I had to show them) and the waiter cleared my wife's plate while she was holding her fork and still eating.
Ambience was nice, quiet and a bit dark.
Value for money is certainly good, especially with their online deals, but service lets them down
Terrific service, very good food, nice spot. Lovely dinner catching up with friends, good ambience and attentive service. Quality of food was good, and the value was v competitive too.
Very beautiful restaurant, setting and service perfect for a romantic date or valentines day dinner. A bit on the expensive side but well worth it.
Gorgeous fish sharing platter, full of fabulously juicy and large seafood; a whole fish and variety of coloured potatoes.
Would definitely visit again
Cool Locale, disappointing food.
The food & service was hit/miss. I wanted to like it but I cannot lie.
Was a nice place service was abit slow food was ok not great we all asked for medium rare steaks came medium were bit tuff wouldnt of gone if didnt have the deal afew of the boys wanted the rib eye but some how they sold out wouldnt go back
Good place to eat and great ambience. The problem we had was that the female waitress did not know what food came with the mains, sizes etc. She had to go and ask other members of staff for every questions that we had.
Had a very nice steak here, opting for the recommended accompanying wine. Both were fantastic, service was great too. Recommended.
Good service and atmosphere, food could definitely be better.
Waited 20mins for a very rude (wearing suit and glasses) floor manager in the main restaurant area to eventually take our order. He came to the table and got distracted immediately by another staff member and disappeared not to be seen again. Had to flag down a waiter who then took our order resulting in an 25min wait overall. Food was very good but each course took an age to get to the table. Service very poor but food is very good standard. Have been several times to this restaurant however this is our worst experience ever.
Avoid - awful.
I used to visit Malmaison often so was excited to return after a few years' hiatus. I was depressingly underwhelmed.
The food was generally fine (except for a burnt chocolate pudding) but service was some of the worst I have experienced in years - the waiter had no clue about the menu (cafe de Paris butter was "just kind of garlic butter" and sauce vierge was "sort of peppercorn sauce" - clearly not the case since there is already a garlic butter and a peppercorn sauce on the menu) and got our order wrong at every single course - the fries weren't the ones we'd ordered, the wine wasn't the one we'd ordered, the steak wasn't cooked how we'd ordered, mustard wasn't the one we'd ordered, the (burnt) dessert wasn't the one we'd ordered, the milk was cold not hot - each not a big deal at all in itself but over the course of the meal hugely frustrating (and inexplicable since the restaurant was practically empty). And to add actual insult to injury he got visibly cross and argued with us practically every time that either our tastebuds or our memory was wrong and he was right.
To be fair to Chez Mal, the manager was lovely, took our desserts and coffee from the bill and offered us drinks to apologise but such poor, sullen service completely ruined our meal.
Rather expensive for what it was, with off putting music in the background. Food was good enough but the waiter brought wrong drinks and the steak knives were anything but sharp - difficult when cutting a steak!
We went to Chez Mal for an Xmas dinner get together with a few friends. We got the Xmas standards prepared and cooked to a good standard and reasonably priced. The place was busy but we still got good service.
Christmas get together with friends. Very friendly staff and great food. Loved the setting here too.
Went for a Xmas lunch and the place was very quiet which was quite strange in itself given how close it was to Xmas. Despite this the service really was the worst I have ever experienced in London. 2 hours for 2 courses, waited 20 minutes for drinks, forgotten courses, sides brought out 10 minutes after the mains, some steaks double the size of others despite being the same order. Pretty embarrassing really. Which is a shame as the food was quite nice, albeit not as good as, say, Hawkesmoor and much more expensive.
The food was quite nice but nothing special, apart from the salad bar which was a nice touch. We bought a voucher which worked out well in terms of the amount of food and drink we were able to consume. Probably wouldn't go back as the service was quite slow, however friendly.
Good and efficient service. Lovely food. The version was particularly tender and the prawn cocktail quite large.
very friendly service but food a bit so-so
very quick if you need to go to barbican after
See below my daughters comments on disabled access
On Sunday 13th November, I attended a family lunch at Chez Mal in Charter house Square. My father booked the table of 7 through TopTable, but made sure to phone directly to enquire about disabled access at the restaurant as my mother is severely disabled. He had it confirmed to him that the restaurant was fully accessible. Following a couple of incidents where we have turned up for a meal at a restaurant which he had checked accessibility with, and still found that they are not, I also telephoned myself to double check the level of access. I explained to the person I spoke to that my mother would need stair-free access to the table, and also checked that the disabled bathroom would be accessible to her. I spoke for some minutes to the person, explaining a previous incident where misinformation about accessibility very nearly led us to having to call an ambulance, and that by 'disabled', for this individual, we mean she cannot walk. At all. Cannot transfer safely from chair to chair etc. I was assured this was all fine as there was a good disabled bathroom and a lift. I was therefore astounded to arrive for lunch to find my father and brother standing with my mother, in her wheelchair, having taken the lift down to the bottom floor where lunch was being served, staring at 4 steps down to the seating area. Further, we had been seated in an area of the restaurant which would mean, had we in fact been able to get her down those 4 stairs, we would need to take her back up those stairs to access the (yes, indeed very good) disabled bathroom, and down again to return to the table. My mother has various medical issues which mean she may need to be toileted 2 or 3 times during a meal. The manager on duty (Elitsa) was as baffled as us. She clearly had not been given any information as to the specific needs of our table.
Excellent meal and service
Very good dinner with the opentable option "beef and reef "
All the staff is very kind and the place calm and elegant
The reef and beef deal was great value, and the Halloween twist was lots of fun
Three for the Autumn Special menu. Starters: Beet Salad was very nice. Scotch egg with venison and blackpudding unremarkable. Mains: Rabbit Papadelle, Pumpkin Tortellini and a chunk of beef (not sure which steak it was) all very good. Side order of buttered greens turned out to be just Spinach so that was on the house. Deserts were excellent as were the cocktails. The South African Pinotage (2015) was a bit rough out of the bottle but was quite pleasant in the glass after 15 mins.
Service was polite, good humoured and attentive without being intrusive.
A good lunchtime venue for lunch. Excellent attention from Staff
The restaurant was advertised as a steak venue with a 3 course set menu on open table. When we arrived, the set menu didn't include any steak. We ordered 2 sharing Picanha steaks which were recommended as medium-rare but were served rare and were very tough.
Quick, because we asked as we had another engagement.
Excellent Sunday brunch/ lunch at Chez Mal and fantastic value. Nice restaurant vibe for long Sunday afternoons with friends, good food and good service. Will be back.
Came here for a birthday celebration. The service was friendly and the food was good, although the prices were very high.
My partner and I dined here last weekend. We are avid diners and had eaten at Hibiscus the night before. After receiving an email from Open Table I decide we would go here for lunch.
The service was a little slow, however when the food arrived we could not have asked for anything more. We shared the Scallops and Steak tartare. They were both amazing, but I feel the pea puree on the scallops lacked seasoning. The steak tartare was beautiful and the addition of the truffled egg yolk was sublime.
For our mains we had the Beef and Reef, which consisted of sirloin and a large langoustine. The steak was cooked to perfection as was the langoustine.
We have already decided we will return next time we are in London.
