Very relaxed atmosphere, nothing was rushed, friendly staff, food was excellent.
The restaurant was wonderful with great food, service, and view. The only downfall was the romantic nearly $200 dinner sitting outside overlooking the river was partly ruined as a party from inside let their 8 kids come outside to yell and play soccer on the yard in front of us (12 feet from us) for 1.5 hours of our 2 hour visit. For $200 we would not expect children acting like that and it being allowed by parents and management. We will come back but hopefully parents and management will be more respectful of others wanting a romantic dinner.at that price.
Great food. Friendly visits from the chef.
Lovely dinner. Food was wonderful, those duck crepes should always stay on the menu (yum!). Our host was lovely and attentive. Thank you, we'll surely be back!
Everything was great , as expected. We've been here many times since new mgt. took over, never dissapointed.
Beautiful place with excellent food and attentive service
This was our first time at Cedar Knoll. They really made an extra day for Mother's Day. There was a fixed price menu for dinner, and everything was outstanding! We will definitely return and also tell others about the restaurant.
We decided to try Cedar Knoll for our Mother's Day location. Views were great and we were seated in a booth overlooking the Potomac. Service was excellent and we were impressed by how responsive and friendly the staff was. Only real issue was the food. They had a Mother's Day buffet and the options were severely limited. Would have appreciated several more options than what was provided. The quality of the food offered was also fairly mundane and nothing really stood out. Had the food options been better crafted, I would have been happy to give Cedar Knoll a five-star rating. Would still recommend others try the location though given all of the other advantages mentioned.
Not worth the $70 per person brunch buffet. Food was bland and not much selection. We were autograted 20% and the service was way below what would have warranted a 20% tip
We had a reservation at 730 and when we got there we would told it would be a 5-10 minute wait. Not a big deal. After about 20 minutes we ordered appetizers at the bar. Around 830 we are finally given a table but no one comes and gets our order for a while. We finally got our meal at 9:20... again this was a 730 reservation. The food was all delicious, well cooked, well seasoned... but the service is so bad that it almost isn’t worth it!
The drink menu has some really creative drinks that were really well done. The menu itself also has a lot of great choices. The dishes we ordered we're great!
It took a long time to be seated even though we has a reservation. Once seated, it took a while before the wait staff came to the table.
Food was amazing!
It was my mom's 88th birthday party and everything was PERFECT. We were able to sit in our favorite room, the table was beautifully set, and the staff went out of their way to make the evening spectacular. No matter what we needed or wanted, the staff was right on top of it, always with a smile and very helpful. I brought in two different tortes/cakes and the staff did a beautiful job of arranging them on a platter, added candles after I forgot to bring some, and sliced the tortes/cakes so everyone got a slice of each one. My family has been going to Cedar Knoll for years and have always had a wonderful time and good meals, but this time was better than anything we've experienced in the past. Again, I can't thank the staff enough for making my mom's birthday so special and for such a wonderful evening.
Our meals were outstanding...lobster/scallop risotto and boneless lamb shank. Not only a beautiful presentation but so delicious
Truly a hidden gem
I've dined at the Knoll several time since the new management took over at it's been terrific every time. So good to see this old standard living up to today's culinary standards.
The service is consistently inattentive and slow. Food is always delicious. View is outstanding. Trade offs. I’ll go back.
I LOVE the food at this restaurant. I've been there twice now, seated in different rooms each time -- the second time, because the first time was SO noisy, I specifically asked for what was supposed to be the quieter of their rooms. As on the first visit, service was so nice; the food is outstanding; but the noise levels just cannot be overlooked. The entire place is so cacophonous, it is almost impossible to hear a table companion, seated just feet away, without shouting. That is a real turnoff.
Started off with a hostess who reminded me of an entitled 12 year old child, but she gave us all something to laugh about after her little episodes. The servers were kind and sweet, just a little slow and inattentive. We had a fun group, so our overall experience was good. I’m not sure I’ll come back, but I won’t completely write it off. The patio ambience was refreshing and relaxing.
First time we were able to sit on the terrace when going to the inn. We had a great experience as usual but really enjoyed having the true view of the river and grounds.
Veal scallopini was excellent as well.
Having been clients of the Inn since 1970, we have known a variety of management over the years. The venue is perfect, both inside and outside dining, but a bit more training of personal would be appreciated: the hostess pointed us to our table, and left immediately. The table was for 5 when we were 6 guests, with no room to add another setting. Drinks were long in coming. Buffet: twice we had to ask for plates, several dishes were empty at salad bar. Roast lamb was tasty but not carved well (lumpy pieces, some inedible) and mint sauce spoiled by addition of cilantro. Egg and salad stations good, also dessert table.
Pricey option but it was great food and service
Went for Easter Brunch, hard to criticize because the food was excellent but there was not enough quantity or selection. The main proteins were Crab Cakes and Lamb. For such a limited offering the crowd and line was too long. Our server seemed to be in LaLaLand and everything took 30 minutes longer than it should've. Also I ordered an omelette that came out underdone twice. The brunch was $60pp with no alcohol. Loved the restaurant itself but the holiday brunch was underwhelming.
Waited two hours for the entrees. Food was poor overall.
I probably would have given this 5-stars had it not been for the service. 45-60 minutes between appetizer and main course. Granted it was a holiday weekend. Needs much better pacing between courses.
My steak was worth the wait; DELICIOUS!!!
Great food. Slow service. Very loud
Cedar Knoll is a lovely Inn! Great views, really nice professional staff, and wonderful gourmet food. It is very handicapped accessible as well. There is parking right outside the door. Very easy for my 92 year old father to get in and out with his walker. We went early at 5pm on a Tuesday and really enjoyed the view of the river. We had the gorgeous lobster and scallop risotto and the tasty homemade quick-bread. Very easy for dad to eat. We enjoyed our evening there very much. My brother's family went the following night and they all loved it, too. Very homey, special but not too formal. The menu has something wonderful to please everybody.
This is not your parents' Cedar Knoll. Now under new ownership, Cedar Knoll finally offers food that matches the extraordinary views of the Potomac. Already looking forward to returning.
food was outstanding but service was slow and not kept informed on status of order. would recommend because of the food and ambience.
My wife and I met a friend there to celebrate my birthday. Food was great. Service was outstanding (Kudos to Sophie). Noise level was acceptable and it was easy to talk. We sat in a booth that had a great view of the Potomac. This was our second trip and we will be back again soon.
Very intimate and quiet dinner at Cedar Knoll. Very nice wine, appetizers, salads, entrees, deserts. Memorable dining experience for a very special occasion.
It was excellent!!! The atmosphere, gourmet food, drinks, and service. We will definitely be going again.
Cedar Knoll is a lovely restaurant with the ambiance of a Colonial home that is very inviting. The service is always consistent, very accommodating, professional and polite. The food is delicious but a bit overpriced. The portion is of substance but if you are expecting leftovers, you will not have them unless you eat like a bird. My disappointment is with the wine menu. Very few good selections. There are numerous Virginia wines to include on the menu but the two that are offered are of not good consumption. The restaurant has an outside patio with a view of the Potomac River which is beautiful in nice weather. Definitely worth trying and will visit again, just not on the top of our list.
I visited Cedar Knoll on a chilly Sunday in March with two friends and had an extraordinary experience. Impeccable service and delightful courses that were both delicious and beautifully presented. Overall it was a memorable experience that I'd have rated 5 stars.
I brought another guest last weekend to enjoy this special treat. It was a much busier day and overall I was less satisfied with the food and the service. There were large groups being served outdoors so that probably impacted the kitchen and servers. I never received a requested refill for iced tea. The lovely biscuits that precede the meal were dumped on the table in a rush. The entrees were okay, certainly not special.
Cedar Knoll has so much going for it. I will probably try it again and hope for a better result.
We ate brunch outside on the patio on a beautiful sunny day. The view of the Potomac is spectacular We all enjoyed our food The grandsons loved the double decker hamburger & the deep fried French toast. The adults thought the vegetable risotto and duck confit with white/sweet potato hash was fabulous Our waitress was most attentive, pleasant & helpful
I attended a Rotary Alexandria Central event where Cedar Knoll was a participant and provided samples of food and photos. I knew it would be great because a few times I tried to dine there, the parking lot was full, so I was excited to finally get in. Everything was delicious.
I have in the past heard Cedar Knoll has a poorer reputation. Not sure where this comes from. The entire experience was five star. The food the service and the view where all excellent. The staff friendly and informative about the menu. Just go you wont be disappointed.
