Cafe Routier, Bistro and Lounge, serving a three paneled menu format; Regional (a different region of the world every 8 weeks), Seasonal (locally sourced seasonal ingredients) and a specialty menu of classic Bistro fare. A 40 seat lounge serving 'small plates' and tapas adjoins the bar area. Ethos is important to us.
A little disappointed with quality of food. I had the duck dinner, it was slightly over cooked and not a lot of taste. My son and mother had steak/frittes. Both steaks were a bit chewy, but flavor was good, my dad had hanger steak and said it was wonderful. Again, most times food is awesome, this day ( Father’s Day) it was so-so
My wife and I love Cafe Routier! We love the food, wine and atmosphere. Chef Jeremy Haile is a great new addition!
The restaurant is lovely food is good. The dinning room just has lousy service compared to the pub area. The pub menus is much better then the other menu . If your going to have an upscale restaurant with up scale prices then you should have well seasoned wait staff not obnoxious staff . I much prefer sitting at the bar then the dinning room ! By the looks of the people waiting to sit in the pub area I’m not alone .
Always fantastic! Loved the cheese plate and the roast chicken entree.
We went to Cafe Routier last Saturday night for our anniversary on the suggestion of online reviews. The restaurant was lovely, but not very full considering it being a Saturday night. Our waitress was very nice, but also somewhat awkward. The quality of the food was very uneven. I had so send back my drink, but it's replacement was just fine. Our appetizers were outstanding - an excellent foie gras mousse and my fried oysters were devine. My entree was disappointing - perfectly cooked duck which unfortunately had an overly sweet sauce. My wife's steak frites were excellent! The portions were large which left no room for dessert. I think we should have eaten in the bar which was hopping!
Always love Cafe Routier! Great menu, great drinks and great service. Every time!
The risotto, cod, and creme brulée were all delicious!
Food was disappointing. Bland taste. Usually much better experience.
My wife and I both had mothers meatloaf it was excellent , portion was good size. We had heard so much about the French fry appetizer that we had to try them the reviews we right they are great. The staff was excellent Shailene our waitress was great definitely will ask for her when we go back. Holly our bus was much more than that she was very pleasant she took the time to talk to us and was very helpful. Randy the host noticed a potential issue that would have created a problem for us before we did and moved us right away . He was on top of everything. We will definitely make the trip from West Haven again.
Very nice atmosphere, truly excellent service. Nice variation in menu options, appreciated adaptation to accommodate a dietary (allergy) restriction. Will recommend wholeheartedly!
I could come every single night for the charred tomato soup with grilled smoked mozz cheese. It's that good. We enjoyed our dinner and will be back.
Service was very good.
The menu was very limited and not very imaginative.
The food quality was ok but not consistent was the price being charged.
We went on a Friday not and the dining was not too busy.
Now we know why.
Our favorite nice place on the shoreline. Always a nice dinner.
Outstanding! The french fries here are life changing and an excuse to go. The rest of our meals were equally outstanding. The ambiance is understated but chic and the service is friendly and competent. Even though we have been there before, they never cease to impress with the quality of their offerings. The bar is a happening place and the Bar menu is equally good. We ordered from both menus! Awesome.
Our evening was superb. Randy, the Manager, showed us you our beautiful booth. He was very friendly and accommodating. We had some great cocktails with an order of the fritos - the best. Then we tried some of the different salads and they were exquisite. For dinner, our party of 3 had the NY strip, the Veal Chop and Mom' s Meatloaf. The NY strip was the most tender and tasty steak that I have ever had. The other 2 meals were also outstanding- very tasty with delicious vegetables and potatoes. The cocoanut cake with vanilla ice cream was to die for. What a superb, intimate dinner with lots of good service. I think my water glass was filled 10 times. It is definitely a 10 and the prices are moderate. Can't wait to return!!
Very interesting selections. Attentive wait staff.
My first time back at Routier in a couple years and the food and ambience remains excellent -- fresh, innovative and nicely presented. One area I was challenged with and not sure if this was our server or the approach they're striving for, but service seemed very "automated" without personality, passion or individuality. Also, service wasnt rushed, per se, but could probably use a bit more breathing time between courses -- entrees were served within only a couple minutes from when apps were cleared. Overall, very positive but needs a bit of server coaching to reach excellent rating.
The food is usually amazing here however the egg on the asparagus was not cooked and the white portion very runny, the octopus on the chewy side when it’s usually cooked perfectly and the drinks were not balance properly and had too much sour mix and too much alcohol. Disappointing visit for a Saturday night. I think I’ll go on a slower Tuesday and hope it’s properly executed.
Had not been to Cafe Routier recently and went with some friends we had not seen in a while. We won't wait as long to go back. The food and service were excellent, and the atmosphere allows you to have a conversation without yelling. Overall, a great experience.
Great place. Consistently a wonderful place to dine
We ate the best veal Milanese I’ve ever had!
Every time we eat here it never disappoints. The food is always amazing and the service is top notch! Such a fantastic date night spot.
Love this place!
Everything about this restaurant is always outstanding . . . food, service and ambience.
No special menu at all.
Lots of empty tables in the main restaurant and yet they tried to seat the two of us in the empty back room.
The service was mediocre.
Easter lunch. Excellent food, service and ambiance. Thank you!
We LOVE Cafe Routier! The food is amazing, portions great (not too tiny), the atmosphere perfect, and staff fantastic and professional. They have very tasty gluten free dishes also, lovely wines, and great beer.
Veal was a little over cooked but everyone elses meals were great!
Hadn't been to Cafe Routier in a while but decided to celebrate my wife's birthday there and we're glad we did. We started by splitting an order of fried oysters -- always good here and they didn't disappoint. My wife had wild boar bolognese which was as good as comfort food gets. I went with the espresso glazed duck (breast and confit leg), which was cooked to a perfect medium rare....so tender I barely needed a knife. We finished with a shared chocolate / caramel turtle cake dessert that was delicious. Cafe Routier is also a wine lover's paradise with an extensive list that includes many very reasonably priced bottles. Our meal was perfectly paced with no rush between courses, and our friendly waiter showed just the right level of attentiveness without being intrusive. All in all, a wonderful meal! We won't take so long to go back this time.
As always Cafe Routier was an absolute pleasure. This is one of our favorite places to go. Their Hangar Steak, Lobster Mac n Cheese and grilled brussels sprouts are fabulous. We also enjoyed the winter salad. We've been coming to Cafe Routier for years and have always had great service and great food. Strongly recommend them!
Meredith was upbeat and FANTASTIC!!
I was looking for a restaurant that would allow 8 guests to visit and chat without too much background noise. Café Routier provided that atmosphere. The service was attentive and the food was very good. There was enough variety on the menu to please everyone in our group and they also featured interesting specials. I will definitely return to Café Routier!
Our food was very good and we have always had good experiences at this restaurant. The one comment I will make is that both my wife and I noticed that things were quite salty. We both found ourselves drinking a lot of water when we got home. Otherwise, our evening was very nice. The mussels are about as good as any we have had elsewhere, including those served in Nova Scotia and in Belgium!
The restaurant design is understated elegance and set up for a good degree of intimacy despite the large space. The food was excellent as was the service.
This was our third visit after having a wonderful meal in September for our anniversary and in February for my birthday. We came for my husband's birthday. Service was great (Kirstin), and food was excellent. We were glad to see the winter menu again, so I chose the Wild Boar Bolognese which he had last month. The roasted oyster appetizer was outstanding, and my husband enjoyed his onion soup gratinee along with his lamb special. Kirstin and the other waiterstaff were attentive. We each ordered dessert, both of which were excellent -- my lemon tarte and his pineut cake. The lighting at our table was just right, and it wasn't too noisy. We plan on returning again and again.
Interesting menu selections. Delicious food attractively presented.
My only complaint is the noise level in the back dining room.
Food was great, Maybe can use a little updating. Wall paper falling off the walls in areas but overall a nice place to enjoy great food!
