Service was a little slow (which is sometimes the case at Cafe Modern). Food is very good. Fairly good variety on the menu. Extremely loud as surfaces are all concrete or glass and the room was full. In spite of all this, we enjoy going and will go back again.
Loved the food and the simple decor along with the view. The only disappointment was dessert. We ordered
pumpkin tiramisu. The creme had a waxy flavor , the pumpkin had an orange flavor, the
name was not a good choice, It led me to believe it would be tiramisu with a pumpkin flavor, wrong!
The burger was excellent, prepared exactly as ordered. The fries were cooked well but had so much salt on them they were virtually inedible. The salt actually crunched in my teeth there was so much. My mother had their homemade potato chips which she let me try and they were excellent and I wished I had requested them instead. The service is always slow but they are usually very busy and full because overall it is good food and convenient to the museums.
I love thus place! Sadly, on this visit the kitchen was very busy for Sunday brunch and their lack of attention and time was reflected in a subpar dish that had been recommended by the sever. Happily, the manager was solicitous and understanding.
Top marks on character and atmosphere, but it seems like our food always comes out cold and sub-par for the price.
Cafe phone was not answered by staff
Had to call museum & be transferred to confirm reservation for bday party for Sunday brunch
Service was ok even though restaurant got busy - however we arrived on time and were some of first guest seated and it seemed like it took a while to order.
All those things could and were adjusted but both my daughter and I shared the avocado toast option and within an hour of eating got really sick :-(. It was the only item shared at our table and no other guest had stomach issues.
May need to consider a quality check on current food items...
We love going to Cafe Modern for brunch! The overall atmosphere is really pretty because you’re surrounded by the water features in a modern seating area. The reason we gave the experience a 4/5 is because the service is very slow and each time we go, we’re served cold coffee. The staff is friendly and knows the menu well, so you feel like you can really make an educated decision on what you want to eat. When you go, just plan to be there for a couple of hours.
Amazing Bloody Mary! Eggs Benedict and the Grits are a MUST!
Beautiful setting, excellent food, nice service. A wee bit pricey.
Love this venue and it's atmosphere. Menu is always interesting. Appetizer and drinks were delicious. Both brunch entrees were ice cold. I'll be back and hope for the best.
The grits with cheese and bacon appetizer was wonderful. Right after the grits were served the eggs Benedict were served; there was not room on the table for both dishes. To eat the grits,we had to hold the grits bowl with one hand eating with a spoon with the other.
We both had Eggs Benedict. We had to stack the grits bowls on the table to eat the Eggs Benedict. By this time they were on the cold side. The English muffins were stale and difficult to cut.
The Bloody Marys left a lot to be desired. Instead of salt on the rim there was hot chili pepper powder.
Thank God for the grits and the excellent coffee.
Service would be improved with more staff.
Beautiful view of the trees wrapped with Christmas lights. Pasta dish was a bit overpriced.
We have had lunch many times at the Modern Cafe and it was always very good. This time we decided to try the Friday dinner and had mixed results with our dinner. It is for this reason that I have it 3 stars. I had the Texas redfish dish which was excellent in all ways.
My wife instead had the coq au vin reisling. Unfortunately, the kitchen stumbled with this dish. It was so salty she could barely eat it. I encouraged her to send it back, but she chose not to have to wait. I wish the kitchen could see this review and adjust this dish.
The food is always excellent at the Modern but this visit was exceptional, even for them. Roasted Brussels sprouts were wonderful and the Apple walnut cake was a fabulous ending to a wonderful meal.
The view of the water feature was pleasant, and the restaurant has ample spacing between tables so that you do not easily hear surrounding conversations. Front house staff were all very engaging and polite. Miso soup was unique with the miniature mushrooms (don't recall variety) and seaweed; however, it was bland and I would not order it again. The tofu salad was delicious and the star of our meal - very flavorful, healthy, and loaded. The veg beet burger was good, the beet puree full of flavor.
I would have appreciated knowing they were not doing full dinner service on New Years Eve ahead of time. So we had drinks and hors d’oevres before leaving for dinner elsewhere. The flatbread was good but the sweet potato fritters weren’t slightly burned. Then we went to take a picture out under the lights in the courtyard and got locked out though staff could have easily let us back in. Probably won’t be back for dinner, sorry!
This was a disappointing experience. In the past, the food has been excellent. This experience was mediocre at best. I hope this was an anomaly.
Lunch here was wonderful! Some of the best service I’ve had in a while - our waitress was a delight. The food was incredible and the atmosphere is so relaxed and beautiful. I just love this place!
We thoroughly enjoyed our Friday dinner at the Modern. The chicken dish was outstanding and I loved the pumpkin tiramisu for dessert. You just can't beat the price for the food and the lovely view. I plan to return soon and often!
Food was excellent...surprisingly so. Ambiance was ok. Definitely ask for a table near the window for best ambience...otherwise it is just a cafe at the art museum. Watch out for happy hour and 1/2 price wine and beer...no liquor is specially priced and you have to buy the bottles of wine for the 1/2 priced specials. Very deceiving. Overall a very nice dinner with spectacular views of the pond and lit trees for Christmas.
Food often is great; however the mixed-greens salad that I got (with salmon) had very little variety. I think I had one edamame bean and just a bunch of lettuce. The salmon was delicious though. I just wish there had been more to the salad. I asked for a gluten-free preparation, but that should only remove some croutons at the most. It’s not good when you finish your lunch and have to go buy a protein bar.
Food was okay, not great. Service outstanding with a wonderful ambience!
Ordered the omelet. It was dry and tough! I would have said something but I was with a guest. Was going to leave whole thing but brought it home hoping to add more cheese. Still not so good so didn't eat it. How do you ruin an omelet? No one should be in a restaurant kitchen that doesn't know how to cook an omelet. Over the years I have eaten here several times a year and have enjoyed lunch. Yesterday was unusual. I even mentioned to my friend "I wonder if they have a new chef".
Since I had walked over from the Kimball and had to walk back to my car, I was really disappointed after the effort. Next time I guess I will stay in the Kimball and do the buffet.
Waitress was nice but apparently spread out in the dining room. We were offered the check without having been offered dessert and coffee! My guest actually got up from the table to get service for coffee. You asked so..........
Very inattentive waiter
Food and service was average at best.
We chose the eggs Benedict and the avocado toast. The Hollandaise sauce was bland. There was just a thin shmear of avocados. Disappointed. The view is amazing.
Cafe Modern is a lovely spot this time of year to enjoy a Friday night. The holiday lights and Modern structure provide a wonderful view from the restaurant. The food is delicious. The service is friendly. The acoustics can be on the noisy level, so diners should be prepared for a celebratory feel and din.
Dear Spencer, Thanks for writing! we strive for excellent customer service, so this is very helpful to hear and we will certainly share this with our team. We really appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback and look forward to having you dine with us again soon. Best, Roxanne McLarry

My friend and I had an outstanding meal at Café Modern on a Friday evening! There’s free entry at the museum on Fridays, we we arrived early and enjoyed the artwork. We made reservations at the café and were able to be seated early, and we had the best table in the restaurant. I highly recommend requesting to be seated by the windows. Our server was prompt with water and fresh, warm bread, and we ordered a bottle of wine because they were having a half off special. My friend got the pumpkin gnocchi and loved it, and I had the five cheese baked pasta and also loved it. I would highly recommend this restaurant for any special occasion!
Dear Meg, Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience at Cafe Modern. We're so happy to hear that you enjoyed your meal with us. We hope to see you and your friend, again soon. Regards, Roxanne McLarry
The waffles are the best in the world. I want the recipe.
Dear Susana, We're thrilled to hear that you enjoyed the Sweet Potato Waffle, and will share your compliments with the culinary team! We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience with us. Cheers, Roxanne McLarry
Outstanding in every respect!
Cafe Modern is always a treat. The food is great and a little different from what is offered at other restaurants. The view is outstanding and the two put together make this a wonderful place to come for lunch.
My wife and I went for our anniversary. It was a little cold, but the food and drinks were delicious. I loved the fall menu. I recommend the gnocchi!
Dining on Friday evenings are pretty noisy due to Happy hour crowd. Food and service is excellent. Special wine tasting days with an outside Chef a few times a year is a great idea however they do it in group seating and they do not announce or advertise it accordingly. I don’t think everyone will be confortable dining in groups. I strongly suggest Cafe Modern to re- consider group seating and offer proper table seating for special dinners.
We enjoy the ambience of the Café Modern and the lovely views of the water feature and the building. The menu offers unique and delicious dishes such as the quinoa bowl I had yesterday and the sweet potato waffles. Prices are reasonable especially for the varied and tasty meals served.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. Our culinary team is always thrilled to hear positive feedback from guests, so we will be sure to share your comments with them. We hope you dine with us again soon.
Our waitress, Summer, was outstanding in explaining the menu items in a delightful way. She also got our dessert to us in time for us to make the concert in the auditorium! We love dining at Cafe Modern!
I ordered a dish with poached eggs I asked that the whites be cooked through… They were not! I sent it back, it came back the same! I couldn’t eat it and they still charged me for the dish. Very unusual for a nicer restaurant.
Food was great. Service was quick and the server was very courteous and very helpful. The ambiance was gorgeous with us on the water/fountain side of the museum- the view was beautiful.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience at Cafe Modern. We're so happy to hear that you enjoyed your meal with us. We look forward to welcoming you back again soon.
Host in particular had good professional manners.
Summer was a great server. Really enjoying the new menu. The Waldorf salad and chicken salad have interesting twists on the usual.
