I hadn’t been to Café Deluxe in many years and was somewhat disappointed. The menu seemed more limited than I remember. My cousins and I all found something we enjoyed—the special crispy oysters were quite good—but we were taken aback by a couple of things. The bread appeared to be day-old and been warmed to the point where the crust was so hard it was barely penetrable. In a lesser restaurant we would have passed this off, but I expected better of Café Deluxe. The wine was also an issue. I am very aware of markups and expect them, but a bottle of Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc for $52 is/was insulting. We ultimately ordered a bottle of Italian Pinot Grigio and three glasses. We got three glasses of wine and no bottle. There was an apology but no real accommodation. It may be several years before I go back. As it is a neighborhood restaurant, I regret that.
This is, for me, a neighborhood restaurant. I have reviewed it before. However, I believe it has become better in the last year or so after a slump: both the food and service seem better quality. I went for Sunday brunch this time and was delighted with my Salmon Florentine Benedict. it had a full serving of grilled salmon, perfectly cooked eggs, nicely herbed hollandaise and zucchini fritters rather than english muffin.
I look forward to my next visit.
Food was fantastic. The waiter was incredible. The manager stopped by to say hello. Fantastic
Very relaxed, casual setting. Good food with excellent service. A great place for an enjoyable time.
I always receive the BEST service at Cafe Deluxe.
Great fresh food. Nice ambiance. Wonderful menu choices.
Waitstaff was friendly, and we enjoyed our meal!
The service here is unfortunately always just so-so; items forgotten, food cooked to the wrong temperature, drinks forgotten or taking forever to come. All that said, it is still a very nice neighborhood place, and comfortable with kids.
Salmon was cooked to perfection, salad nicoise was equally good. A little bit noisy, and we were interrupted a bit too often by multiple people inquiring if everything was to our liking. But too much service rather than too little is not a serious concern.
Cafe Deluxe is a great place to grab any meal at! The location is great and the food tasty - they have the best desserts. Additionally the bar is a great place to grab a drink before dinner or for happy hour. There is one bar tender who is the best, I believe his name is Andy and he is the best!
On one of the hottest days of the year, they had the front doors and window panels left wide open. Heat & humidity were a killer. Surprisingly, and unusually, no flies were evident. I couldn't get out of there fast enough.
Very good food and service
Service was excellent at this lovely neighborhood cafe. We were there for Sunday brunch; omelet and eggs Benedict. Food was fine but nothing special. I would like to try it again for lunch or dinner. Cost was very reasonable.
My salmon dish with asparagus risotto was excellent, but I missed seeing lamb shank on the menu.
The restaurant was really crowded when we arrived, but we were seated in accord with our reservation. Had a very good waiter, whose name was Thomas (I think). He was covering many tables, but he kept us all well attended. Thanks!
Just horrible. The place is old and very dirty. It needs remodeling.
We arrived on time and were seated very quickly. The service was good, but the waiter forgot to bring the coffee until we had the entrée. Otherwise our food was good and will return.
Good place for a quick dinner.
WE had reserved 8 people for brunch on Sunday, 4 kids , pre-afternoon matinee. Turned out to be 10 people for brunch! Some members of the party arrived late, and one with two extra people, and the other with only 20 minutes to eat. Food was really good and arrived hot and in good time. The service was outstanding. Our waiter dealt with the confusion with aplomb, good spirits, and flexibility. He was GREAT.
My husband and I come to Cafe Deluxe about once a week or two when it's quiet. We know what we like and don't like on the menu. But we always feel comfortable and the service is good.
We had another very good meal at Cafe Deluxe in Cleveland Park. It can be such a nice place to have a relaxing catch up visit over yummy food. The extensive food and drink menu is always fun to look at. We had a wonderful server and our usual great overall experience.
I had the Porter burger and it was delicious! Our waiter was very friendly and attentive, and very good to our 2 year old.
One of my go-to spots. I like the cafe Deluxe in downtown DC as well, but the Cleveland Park site is casual and community oriented for those who like a neighborhood feel (with a great view of the National Cathedral on the porch). Our server was friendly, animated and excellent (can't remember his name, but he mentioned being diabetic - smaller guy with a mustache and a full, bushy head of hair). A nice, low key evening where we celebrated Father's Day.
Great location if you are attending the National Cathedral (2 blocks away). Service was a little slow due to the presence of a good sized wedding party, but the quality of the brunch food and the hard work of the staff made the experience a delight.
Please stock a good quality chocolate ice cream. Chocolate lovers view this as a serious deficiency in your desert menu which can easily be rectified.
A local favorite. Great food and service.
Cesar salad was horrible - grilled chicken on my goat cheese salad tasted only of garlic and was over cooked— we won’t be going back
Everything was lovely, Thomas our server was prompt, courteous and unobtrusive. My one question, why was the sauce on the eggs Benedict a bright orange? Traditionally the sauce is a pale yellow hollandaise. Just askin' !
I haven't been to Cafe Deluxe in a while and on this occasion we were sad to see that it's not as nice and as good as it used to be. First I want to say that the service and staff were all wonderful - very friendly, efficient and on-point. We had no issues with staff at all. Unfortunately, the food, ambiance, and cleanliness were just not up to par. We had young kids with us and were seated in the back next to an open kitchen galley - the rest of the place was pretty empty inside so it just felt like we were relegated to steerage. The bathrooms were not very clean and the hallway to the bathrooms was also not very clean - I think the style of the floor was supposed to look worn but it just looked dirty and gross. The food was ok, but nothing was fresh and a few things that used to be on the menu are no longer there. We took some leftovers home with us and discovered that the box had a giant Sysco logo on it which explained a lot. All in all we had a nice time with friends but will probably find another place to go in the future. Nothing terrible happened, and again, the staff were great, but in DC, where there are so many places to choose from, Cafe Deluxe does not stand out as a contender.
Great food and exceptional service - very on top of it.
We had a lovely family meal here for Sunday brunch. The lunch menu was also on offer which is a nice departure from other restaurants.
Make sure when you check in at the front, that you are certain they have marked you as arrived.
It seems deaf people are not welcome there. Bad everything over there. I won't go there again.
The burger is a good basic burger. Mixed salad greens with a grilled chicken breast was very nice with crispy chicken and nice vinagrette. Loved the pumpkin seeds added to the salad for some crunch! It has a nice bustling ambiance, and we sat by the window and enjoyed the fresh air for a pleasant Mother's Day lunch.
My partner and I went there for Mother’s Day brunch. Service was incredible and the food was DELICIOUS!
Excellent brunch menu for all occasions year round.
The menu and food was good but the service was awful!! We were seated and it took her at least 5 minutes before she greeted us. We asked for straws with our drinks, she never brought them, we had to ask another server to bring them. I asked for my sandwich to be on a croissant instead of toast and it did not come out correctly. I also asked that my fruit side did not have pineapple in it because I am highly allergic. She wrote all of this down and it did not come out right. We also asked for our check to be separate and she did not do that either. The food was good but based on service I may not come back.
Cafe Deluxe is one of our neighborhood favorites for brunch, lunch or dinner. Its also great for a late night dessert and coffee. Sometimes it can get loud, although it wasn't bad on our latest visit. The service can be also be iffy, but overall we consistently enjoy it.
Cafe Deluxe is always reliable. Our book club popped in for a quick get-together and the food and service are constant. It might not be flashy or fancy, but it is fabulous for the family and a place that is consistent.
The Cafe was very nice about seating our group of five, despite the fact that we were 20 minutes late. Service was ok but slow. Food was pretty mediocre - I had shrimp and grits and the grits were very soupy and tasted like corn chowder. My friend had a cobb salad that was not very appetizing in appearance. Another in our party had a chicken pot pie that was about the quality of a banquet dinner. The only thing that really recommends this place is its proximity to the National Cathedral and its location in an area that just doesn't have many great restaurants. I will look harder for something better next time I am in NW Washington.
I used to visit Cafe DeLuxe regularly many years ago when I lived nearby in McLean Gardens. I remember a place buzzing with conviviality and good wholesome food, such a happy place that it was difficult to get reservations on the day or to walk in without a wait of 30 minutes. In those days it was worth it. Now I am living in Japan, so this was a pilgrimage back and to see an old World Bank colleague whom I had not seen for more than a decade.
Frankly, the restaurant was disappointing, apart from the friendly serving staff. It was half empty. The food was so so minus, the steak incredibly chewy and the apple crumble sweet and lacking in biscuity bite. The menu did not have the appeal that I remember from before. The wine (red Argentine) was good, and the bill was reasonable. Our reunion was good, just such a pity that the restaurant has aged, not for the better.
Our family enjoyed a good meal together after the National Cathedral Kirkin of the Tartans. Wide variety of choices for everyone in the group, including our vegans. Service was good. Noise level was rather high, mainly from a table of young children and a disengaged dad, but otherwise a pleasant dinner.
