What a delicious meal! We liked it so much we came back a week later for more. Tried the sausage sampler this time - delicious! Portions generous, beer drinks good, everything was great!
VERY noisy inside, staff VERY helpful getting us sitting outside!
Small menu, but food was good. Huge beer selection. Long narrow space, so can feel cramped. Reserved a table for a party of 6, which worked out nicely. A little loud, so conversation was difficult. Service was prompt and friendly.
Stumbled upon BRU via OpenTable while looking for a place to grab a fast dinner pre-show at the Academy of Music. Decided to give it a try even as a substantial amount of reviews were not overly favorable (esp. if they didn't come from college-type crowd)
Unfortunately, the place didn't live up to what we expected.
To be fair - we were greeted courteously and seated promptly upon arrival. The table, however had some spills, I guess from previous clients. The spills were immediately taken care of upon notifying our server but one may argue that they shouldn't have been there to begin with.
The server was very friendly but a bit 'hurried'. Once we ordered our drinks and she was back for appetizer order (which was within 5-mins) I asked her if I could change my drink since I saw something on the menu I missed the 1st time . She apologized but said she can't do it since she 'already entered it into the system' (?!?! - )
The place is very loud! I would say it was probably 1/2, maybe slightly more filled and the noise was substantial (again, something that many other people also noticed in their reviews).
The food was just OK - not overly good, but nothing to be happy about. The best thing that we liked was a pretzel with smoked gouda cheese fondue on a side. Everything else was by all means eatable but just 'un-inspiring'. And when everything is said and done - its a sad thing that the best thing from a $75.00 meal (OK that includes 3 drinks and gratuities as well) is a $6.00 appetizer.
The place's web site clams to offer "a cartload of authentic German delicacies just off the boat from das Mutterland." I honestly do not think any self-respecting German from Mutterland would give Bru any high marks for these so-called 'German delicacies'.
So, most likely will not be back as the area has a huge number of many other places to sample from.
Don't like to write negative reviews but every so-often one just happens to be the right fare - and this one was IT
Great experience. The manager was very friendly and considerate. They went to the closest shop to get us candles for the bday cake.
Great hospitable service! Potato pancakes and salad was delicious!!!
Great food. Lively atmosphere. Some people might like a quiet dining experience. If that's the case, you might want to find a different location. If you enjoy Wurst, Schnitzel and Spätzel, then this is your place. Some of the best sauerkraut I've ever had. My wife got the mussels and they were so savory. Be ready to speak up to be heard, but more importantly be ready for a great meal served by a very polite waitstaff.
Maybe a good bar, but awful restaurant. Brats were good, but the other food was definitely NOT German (as advertised). Didn't anyone ever tell them that German potato salad is served WARM?! BRU's salad was cold and potatoes were not cooked through. The only really good thing (other than the wursts) was the Brussels sprouts. So...go to have drinks (if you don't want to talk to anyone - too loud), but do not plan on a good dinner. Much better bar food at other places.
Great location near City Hall and the Convention Center. Great list of authentic German beer and authentic German good. It does get a little loud later in the evening but overall a very good experience.
Ordered an appetizer and it never came. Ordered wurst plate. German potato salad was completely tasteless--like paste---and sauerkraut was nothing special at all. Way too noisy/could barely talk. Won't go back.
Our experience may have been a typical, or just a busy Saturday night. We finally sat down 45 minutes after our reservation time, but once we did our server was friendly and fun and the food was good! We were seated at a table next to the rear exit, next to a large, loud party and watched people parade in and out of the back door between the bar next door and the restaurant. The front of the house seemed tame and would have more enjoyable four our party. We'd go back but maybe for lunch.
Great selection of German beers - Hefeweizen and its maltier cousin Dunkelweiss being my favorites. The female wait staff are dressed in revealing outfits. It's as if someone crossed a German bierhall with a go-go bar, so it's a great choice for a guy's night out. The crowd is co-ed, however, so the place doesn't feel creepy; the atmosphere is upbeat and festive.
When I arrived ahead of time for my 1:00 PM reservation, I was told by the hostess that due to an event, they could not honor my reservation. There was no offer to let us wait, we were just simply turned away. I have been to this establishment before and do not plan to return. I understand that glitches happen, but am extremely offended at the way I was turned away. I feel that you have misused the Open Table website, and you certainly threw a wrench in my plans for the afternoon.
Really impressed with the variety of beers offered. Shared an appetizer and the Bru Platter. Really good sized portions, plenty to share. The wait staff were attentive and upbeat, even though the place was jammed. Bar area was very crowded and music loud, but if you're with a group you probably wouldn't notice. Looking for a fun date night? Check it out earlier in the evening then make your way to Monk's after.
Went with a pre-theatre dinner crowd and had a great time. Seated and served promptly by a very friendly waitress. The food was good and the beer list quite extensive and interesting. The noise level was off the charts and did inhibit conversation but the place was vibrant! I'd go again.
I love coming here for the sandwiches and beers. Lots of German beers available.
Go for the variety of beer, both on draft and in bottle. This place has just about everything on draft, from two Hefeweizen drafts to genuine Kolsch from Koln to the Hofbrauhaus Helles and Dunkel. The food is great because of what they offer. It may be average for a German Kneipe, but it is a great find in Center City. The place was packed mid afternoon. One caveat: the average age of the patrons is in the 20's, you would find older generations enjoying this place in Germany.
Great beer selection but the reservations were behind. The manager recovered but then sitting, the music was so loud that it was difficult to have a conversation. Smoke from smokers outside wafted into the table. The food and service were very good but the atmosphere for a sit down dinner was not desirable (even for my college age kids)
This was our first dining experience at BRU - we went for lunch, it was perfect! Currywurst, kase spatzel and the doner kebab were delicious!! Also had some great beers to wash down our lunch! We will definitely return!!!!
One of the best beer offerings I'd ever seen. Not only do they have a tremendous selection of draft beers, but their bottled offerings are superb. Many "hard to find" domestic craft beer as well as imports from around the world. There's something for everyone. For a Saturday night, the place was extremely lively with loud 80's/90's rock music playing in the background.
Our server seemed a bit new, but still did OK, although she probably could have sold us more food and beer if she were more attentive.
As part of our pre-concert tailgate, we started out with their Bavarian pretzel and then had the Charcuterie which was small, but tasty. Finally had the mussels which were excellent.
The place is quite massive as they also have a biergarten. Lots of people, lots of great German style food. Don't come here if you're looking for a quiet, romantic evening. Come here to celebrate something.
Great beer menu and and really good German themed menu,, overall very good for a late night diner with friends. It's a little loud for a business meeting or special occasion, but great for friends.
Our first time here was very good food and we had the same choices this time. Not sure why it was not as tasty as before so don't think we'll be back. Perhaps it is a hit and miss thing. I would suggest that you go yourself and have your own opinion.
This place looks really cool from the exterior (with U-Bahn next door). When I walked in, the hostess? said to sit anywhere. I mentioned I had a reservation, but she seemed disinterested in this information. There wasn't a soul in the place....this should have alerted me to the quality of the food. Go elsewhere!
Besides the waitress which was cute and nicely dressed, the food is far from the authentic German taste and quality. The beer is OK, but it is not cold enough.
This was my second visit. This time around the service was slow, but more importantly, the food was not impressive. Potato salad that had vinegar in it during the first visit was tasteless this time around. The special, and asparagus flatbread, was a piece of flavorless somewhat uncooked dough with maybe two spears of asparagus, two cherry tomatoes and some arugula.
If you are looking for a traditional German beer hall then this is not your place. If you are looking for great German foods (fit for someone who isn't familiar with German foods) and a beer list that is stupefying than this is it. The bar and inside are very modern and loud, I choose to sit on the wooden tables outside where it is quieter and you can hear your friends speak. The wait staff is very friendly, very knowledgeable. And very easy on the eyes. A true gem of the Philly bar/restaurant scene.
Overall the experience was ok. We were really dissapointed with the beer wall. Because we got there for lunch at 1230 not all of the beers were ready yet do we waited and then when we were told they were ready we got two entire glasses of head bc the taps hadnt been bled from the night before. We showed them to the waitress and were basically told we were out almost 10 dollars. The food was good and enjoyable but not alot of selections . We were disappointed also that we have a bar wall key with 6 dollars on it that rather than cash back we had to take it with us even though we didnt want to return.
Great food and even better beer. And the pre-paid key-fob for the self-serve beer taps is so much better than waiting for bartenders.
Very extensive beer list with many on tap. Good vibe and the menu gives a number of choices, both German and more basic brew pub options. The wurst platter was very good and everyone liked the sides that come with them. The pretzels are a good start to the meal
The service was amazing, the atmosphere is great the menu is short on food but they have a huge selection of drinks, I will definitely comeback !
I HAVE THE BRATS FOR LUNCH. NOTHING SPECIAL ABOUT THIS PLACE.
German food at it's best http://sebblog.com/2015/06/30/philadelphia/
Fun atmosphere although quite loud. We were a party of 8 and I'd say 4 of us really liked our food, 2 were fine with it and 2 were disappointed. Weiner Schnitzel was very dry and you'd think a signature German dish like that would be a specialty. If you don't like beer, you may be hard pressed to find something you want to drink. Did not get to sit in Beer Garden which I think would have made the experience more enjoyable. I sometimes think Open Table reservations get put in the "cheap seats."
I would not go back here. There are better German restaurants in Philly including Brauhaus Schmitz and Frankford Hall. This place was so loud that you had to scream for other people to hear you just a foot in front of you. The food was mostly overcooked and not worth the price. Tables were cramped and despite requesting outdoor seating in the reservation, we were given a table inside.
+ Large beer list
+ Waitress did a great job
- Way too noisy
- Cramped tables
- Bad food
Maybe good for a drink if you like a loud scene? If you are getting food, go with the soft pretzel.
We had the wurst platter which easily feed a group of 4. Very delicious curry wurst. Amazing selection of beers and ciders. The soft pretzel was by far everyone's favourite.
We selected this restaurant for the German food. My friend had spent most of her childhood in Germany. I was especially surprised that I enjoyed it too. The staff was friendly and attentive.
Great place! Only complaint was in the seating ... Wobbly table and uncomfortable chairs. However, the food, service and beer were incredible!! Great location too!!
This was our second visit and it was noticeably different. The food, except for the brussel sprouts, was terribly average. I had the turkey rueban and it was just okay, nothing special like the menu descriptions. My husband had the wiener schnitzel and was disappointed. One person had the salmon, and she thought it was good.
Can I just say it, I hate it when the server interrupts conversation to take away a plate when the table is not finished.
Food was abundant, beer selection wide and excellent. Noise level violates OSHA limits for airport tarmac. My ears are still ringing 2 days later. Seriously, wear earplugs. The beer selection may be worth a visit, but absolutely not without hearing protection.
good German food and craft beer! What more could you want on a cold Saturday afternoon.
