Border Grill - Downtown LA
What Insiders Are Saying
All-around solid Mexican food with a slight corporate vibe.
First off, they sat us by a party of 8 ladies drinking. You can imagine what that was like and how loud it was. Second, I ordered a margarita and chips and salsa. The drink came in 15 min and was watery and the side of chips and salsa came when the meal did... 25 min later. The second drink took another 15 min to come. I cant imagine why it takes them so long to make a drink when they werent even busy. The tacos were delicious but the experience was disappointing and wished it was better.
Service was very slow. Wait 40 minutes between bunch second serving. Then received things we didn’t ordered or already had. Didn’t like the changed bunch new menu items. Never received birthday wish for my daughter or candle either. Tighten it up BG!!
Our Server was amazing! Food was tasty!
We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at the Border Grill. We visited for lunch on a Saturday. The food was excellent, the service was outstanding and the artwork was evocative. I had the carnitas tacos, which were perfectly done with crispy pork and a very balanced citrus-y slaw. My husband had the chicken quesadillas (a go-to at any restaurant for him) and he gave it 5 stars. We normally don't have dessert with lunch, but just had to finish with the churro tots, and they did not disappoint! The service was personable and warm, by waiter, server, and bus person.
Missed having Prix Fix option on menu
Best happy hour on the patio in downtown LA, in my opinion!!! Great food, great drinks, and great patio!
NeNe was great!!
Everything was great - food, service, soundtrack, décor etc. The only thing I would change if I could is to lower the music volume.
Always reliably fun, with interesting menu choices, great drinks and friendly staff. The plantain empanadas were wonderful. Corn tamales and pork eggs Benedict less tasty than they sounded on the menu.
Still one of my favorite Pre game or pre theater hangouts.
Great waitress & food was good. Very loud music was only drawback.
We really enjoyed this recommendation from the Jonathan’s Club. Loved the chips and dips. Our entrees were all hot and delicious! Highly recommend this location in DTLA.
Hip joint by early celebration chief Feniger and Milliken. Bold flavor profiles and nice presentation.
The noise from the private party was overwhelming, had to go get our own plates for appetizers, had to go get own napkins because server didn't bring them, portions were too small for price, and drinks (Margarita) were too sour (too much lime juice and NO simple syrup). Sorry, we wasted time/money.
This is our go-to place for birthday lunches. Border Grill always has delicious food and great drinks!
It was nice. Went for happy hour and dinner. Happy hour service was so so. dinner service was good. Food was AMAZING. Price was pretty good for DTLA.
Really nice to sit outside. The server was really great, altho service a bit slow for someplace that wasn't that busy. Food was good, i would go back when it is convenient.
Went for brunch and we LOVE all the vegan options. Food was fresh, flavorful, and creative. It’s great seeing a vegan brunch menu. I’ve never seen an all you can eat brunch before. Hope the vegan menu continues and expands.
Good food, great server, small portions and overpriced. 3 each small tacos, beans, rice and 1 beer: ~ $70
I have always loved this place, the cookbooks, the radio show etc. but it seems like it has gone downhill. The waitstaff were very nice and attentive, but the atmosphere was awkward with a big loud party in the front and a empty feeling dining room in the back where we were seated. We were celebrating a special occasion but it did not feel special. As for the cuisine, the brussels sprouts were soggy, brownish, and had an off flavor. The tostada with farmers market vegetables did have some swiss chard, but the rest of the vegetables were minimal and the beans were cold. The prices seemed very high for what we got. Overall, it was an underwhelming experience.
Food is great when it gets out in a timely matter. I've been a few times and all I can remember is they take so so long to bring food to the table. The kitchen needs to work on their turnaround times for food to get to tables. They're always nice when spoken to but definitely kitchen needs major time delivery improvement. Some of the service staff could be much more aware of theire tables and their needs.
The food was terrible .
My family of four and I attended Father’s Day Brunch yesterday at noon. The bar area was relatively open as was the patio and the dining area. The dining area was also very dark. The further in we got the more it seemed like it was getting darker. Upon checking in I had asked about patio seating and was told by the hostess that it was already full.
After being seated it took our server about ten minutes before he came to greet us/ask for our drink order. As first time patrons we expected more information regarding brunch service particularly because it is a bit unconventional. Not a true brunch, more of a tapas type service.
Upon ordering there was a large lapse of time between ordering and the food arriving. Assuming that some of the food had sat on the pass for a while, it was merely warm upon arrival. The plating looked rushed and often unappealing. Thankfully the food was tasty.
The bean empanadas were tasty, as were the chilaquiles (plating looked like two scoops of slip on a plate). The farmers market tostada was very tasty (plating looked like two mounds of veggies dumped on a plate). The steak (very tasty) and eggs (WAY OVER COOKED, over hard not over easy) was much tastier than the eggs Benny (the sweetness of the pork flavor did not compliment the rest of the dish. The French toast was very tasty but was very soggy from sitting on the pass by the time it made it to our table it was soggy limpy bread. The chicken and waffles were flavorful and crispy as was the fried chicken tender. The brisket and baby back ribs were very tasty with nice plating on paper boats. The portions however were very small, like single very small bites. The corn was grilled perfectly. Sadly more than a few of the items we ordered never made it to our table.
Frustration turned into disappointment when I asked our server for a few napkins. I had to remind him twice and upon his return he handed be five unfolded brown bathroom hand towels. See yelp for more...
Sat at bar. Bar was dirty. I was in la for a day and craved Mexican. This is like a chi chis. No big deal. Mediocre at best. Service was good.
Outstanding creative food
Good atmosphere. Food was up and down. Some peoples dishes were cold.
We met for a Saturday brunch at the Border Grill, on my suggestion. The place was quiet as there were not too many people out yet. We sat at the bar and were served by a bartender who was the archetype mixicologist. I ordered a Beefeater's Bloody Mary and what I received was a botanical, worthy of an apothocary. He mixed the normal spicy Bloody Mary mix with basil, cucumber and other "secret ingredients". Needless to say I ordered another! My companion had a margarita and received the same magical herbal mix. This guy has talent! For brunch, my date chose the Yucatan Pork Benedict. I had the standard steak and eggs. What we got was nothing standard, but rather very much above standard! My steak was what is called in Mexico an "Arranchera". It was tender and juicy and perfectly grilled. The eggs were perfect. My friend's pork benedict was an arrangement of tortillas, poached eggs and a savory pork with sauce. She loved it. At the end we parted company with our wizard barman and enjoyed the day totally restored.
Great all around!! Before the Ahmanson or LA Phil , very convenient. Always great service & food is creative....
Went in for a quick bite in the cantina and the server (bartender) was fantastic
Loved the restaurant and Pablo! I would definitely return in the future when I’m in town
Parking is a problem .It cost you $10.00 plus the food cost .
Food was very good. Service took way too long.
Had a wonderful mother’s day brunch at border grill! It was a little later than we would have liked - 1:30pm- since we waited til just a few days before to make the reservation but it turned out for the better since we had children with us and had plenty of space out on the patio to enjoy our meal.
Food was good but came Luke warm
Very good service from all the staff. The brunch is a good deal. Loved the ceviche.
Good service and friendly waitress. Good food and comfortable environment.
Visited Border Grill on Cinco de Mayo so it was pretty crowded and loud but that just added to the ambiance and was expected on that evening. The food flavors were authentic and flavorful, the only reason they only got a 4 star review from me was because the food temperature could’ve been higher, my tortilla soup was lukewarm when it was placed in front of me, and the tortilla with my taco was a little stiff,, it felt as if it had been made and sat there waiting to be picked up and brought to me... which leads to the service that was a little slow - again,, expected for a holiday evening like that. Overall a good and tasty choice.
The $10.50 margaritas were the worst I have ever had anywhere. This was the consensus of the 3 people in my party that had the same drink. There was a really off taste that we could not identify. We asked the server if he had any suggestions and he said “If you don’t like these margaritas then you won’t like any margaritas.” I have had many margaritas at other restaurants that I have enjoyed but these were the worst. We asked for sangrias instead and they were also almost undrinkable. It tasted like a cross between Hawaiian Punch and cough syrup. Again, I have had sangrias at other restaurants that I have thoroughly enjoyed, but. It these. The food was mediocre and overpriced. I had such high hopes for this well known, high end Mexican restaurant for our dinner on Cinco de Mayo but was incredibly disappointed.
The noise was horrible it gave me a headache service was terrible we had to keep calling random waiter's for napkins straws and our food took forever and it was cold
A lot of waiting and sequence /timing is a real problem .
Meat is good though . Attention to allergies .
