The Blue Nile is a family run Eritrean - Italian café and restaurant, harking back to Eritrea’s colonial history.
Our menu has a mix of Italian and Eritrean classics, from Italian coffees, pasta and ice-creams to Eritrean ‘kemem’ tea (tea infused with cloves, cinnamon, star anise and ginger), warm ‘ful’, meat stews infused with cardamom and cinnamon and cooked in ‘tesmi’, a warm and comforting spiced butter and our delicious home made sweet cardamom flavoured bread called ‘himbasha’.
A lot of our recipes are gluten .
Amazing experience as per usual!!!
The restaurant has an industrial feel to it very cool. Service was attentive. I booked the restaurant as was staying with a friend and wanted a change from our usual haunts. I also had read the Open Table article on the top London restaurants and Blue Nile is featured. We ordered a mixed platter of meat and vegetable dishes and it came with a traditional spongy bread. I thought the meat dishes were very good shame there wasn’t more of it. The vegetable dishes were ok but the bread was cold and so the dishes didn’t quite marry well together and I wasn’t a fan of the consistency it’s quite yeasty/spongy. The Ethiopian beer is recommended. I’m not sure if we ordered badly perhaps I would go back and go for the meat dishes.
Consistently brilliant, every single time. Don’t hesitate to visit, esp. if vegan.
I’m so glad I finally got to try the food at Blue Nile. Although there are not many options, the food caters for meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans alike. It was quiet and the owner explained how to eat the food traditionally and how they dishes were made. Bar the noise from people standing outside the shop (as it is in the middle of a busy street in Woolwich) the atmosphere was relaxed.
Perfect night as usual and expected at this gem of a place.
Amazing as always we love the blue nile.
Food and service was great.
Lovely to try out some new dishes, friendly service, and happy vegan dining companion too!
Beautiful family run restaurant, great food and amazing service.
Been here a number of times and is my favourite place in Woolwich.
great food in a beautiful interior and very warm owners that make you feel you are amongst friends.
Heard about this restaurant a few years ago and finally went at the weekend. The food , service and ambience was outstanding. We are all vegetarian and the food was lovely. Bill for 3 including desert £50 - bargain
This place is an absolute joy, we love taking guests here.
Quite honestly one of the loveliest restaurants I have been to. The owners/hosts, a lovely couple, were warm and welcoming, and the food was affordable and delicious. My friend and I had the injera with meat and veg dishes and kemem tea. We were so full and satisfied we could barely walk! I also had a very informative chat with the gentleman about Eritrea and its current situation, and he was very kind to give me some pamphlets and notes to take home. I can't wait to visit when I am next in London. Keep up the great work :)
Delicious food and great service, would recommend to everyone!
Brilliant as always! Went to Blue Nile for a belated alternative pancake day! Great food and super lovely people working there. Very much to be recommended.
Amazing as always. GREAT ATMOSPHERE
Lucky to have this gem in Woolwich.
Authentic Eritrean food in Woolwich. Good value meal out.
Would definitely recommend, especially to those looking for a vegan meal in Woolwich. Shewa's vegetable stews are superb! Also, make sure to try her homemade caffeine free tea and the coffee she ROASTS HERSELF.
Blue Nile is a wonderful restaurant. The food is always excellent, the service warm and welcoming, and the atmosphere relaxed and pleasant. Highly recommended.
Great space, superb food and amazing hospitality. I love the place and people more with each visit, a true gem
Fantastic little restaurant great food great service
Quirky place, with lovely friendly service. Was good to experience completely different food. Would return with friends.
If you've had Eritrean food before, it's fairly standard and a bit overpriced. The main downside is the arrogance of the owners - they're better off getting young fresh faces who can cope with service if they're not going to greet and serve you with a smile.
They went out of their way to serve us dinner despite a booking error. Food and the ambience of the place were also amazing. Definitely going back again
Beautiful little restaurant in the middle of Woolwich, the food is fab and our whole meal was £28! For 2! It's great value.
The staff are lovely super kind and friendly.
Totally recommend it
Really enjoyed the meal at Blue Nile. Such a unique location and worth the trip out of our way to get there. Super value too
Small, specialist menu. Be prepared to dine with only a few serving spoons and no other utensils. A rare experience, a glimpse from Woolwich into another world. Genial waiting staff, willing to advise and instruct.
Lovely authentic food. Friendly atmosphere, fantastic home made wine
Very delicious and lovely decoration. Loads of food but not too heavy
My friends had wanted to go for ages and loved it.
Another thoroughly enjoyable meal and such amazing value for money.
The lentils and the tomato dish were the highlights.
An amazing secret jewel in Woolwich.
Fantastic food. Great service. Warm, cozy and friendly
Amazing value for money. We loved it!
Very good service, delicious food and lovely people
Cosy and rustic venue, with delicious food and generous portions. Love you the place, hence I've been there three times already.
Lovely unique food in a homely unpretentious family environment. Great value for money too.
Great customer service, very tasty food the atmosphere pf the place goves you the feeling of the Eritrean culture.
The food was ok but nothing like what I expect from Ethiopian food. All dishes were watered down in terms of salt and spice to suit the western palette resulting in dishes that did not taste anything like the originals. The prices were also steep for the portions - we were two adults and a child and ordered the sharing menu, the owner asked if it was three and I said yes. Mistake. We got the same portions as would come for two people but were charged for three. I knew about the portions as a couple next two us ordered the same and got the same portions. Disappointed.
The ambiance is also not traditional Eritrean/Ethiopian. The place was a sausage shop in the past and the owners decided to keep the same decor! Except for a map of Eritrea, nothing related to the culture. The sign in front of the shop also needs an upgrade IMHO.
But on the up note, the owner, Hapte, was a gentleman and was quite nice, chatting with us about Eritrean history etc.
Amazing Eritrean restaurant
Friendly, helpful service
Beautifully cooked menu
Wife had worked in Horn of Africa in 80s & was almost swooning as the smells & tastes came back
Can't wait to visit again with rest of family
First time at Blue Nile, food was fantastic & very authentic. Highly recommend... hidden gem in Woolwich.
We had a wonderful time at the blue Nile, we always do, great food, great service, so warm & friendly, also great because a lot of the food options are vegan, as well as meat. I highly reccomend!
It's our fav restaurant in London. The family who run it are incredibly nice and warm people, the food is just great - if you're into "unconventional" stuff, that is - and it's surprisingly cheap. Their wine list is quite short with only a few options, but they're all quality Italian wines from independent farmers and they're all great. The Injera they make is just unique and their meat & veg stews are something else. This is so enthusiastic that some people might think it's a fake comment, but honestly, it's in my top-5 worldwide list.
