What Insiders Are Saying
Blue Door Kitchen is a nice but not too fancy Gold Coast restaurant in an old mansion. The courtyard patio is beautiful for when it's nice outside.
I’ve been here several times and have been pleased until the last visit. We came here for the fried chicken and the crawfish mac and cheese. Both were on the online menu, but they had apparently taken the crawfish mac and cheese off of the actual menu. We would have gone elsewhere if we knew that ahead of time. We waited almost an hour for our food. Our server was unfriendly and had a terrible attitude. The outdoor patio is lovely, though a bird pooped on my lap. (That part was actually comical and wouldn’t affect my decision to come back.) It also smelled like cigarette smoke for our first 15 minutes or so, but we couldn’t identify the source.
Great food, brussels and kale salad is my favorite. Service was not good. Did not ask how we were doing or come back, forgot order, very slow
I want to come back for dinner! Food was very good. We didn't see the waiter until it was time for our bill but others were bringing us food or syrup when we needed it. Was sorry they didn't have the beignets that day.
Just a lovely brunch spot!
Wonderful setting and superb service.
Mom was visiting and I booked outdoor seating. My reservation was confirmed and there was a private event so we weren’t able to sit outside. Would have been nice if someone could have notified me beforehand. We had to sit upstairs in a creepy quiet atmosphere with 4 other people.
Amazing cool patio. Service friendly and prompt. Food delicious and not too expensive. Neighborhood so neat.
Nice little restaurant, cozy, food is good. However, had a terrible server who was clueless about wine, food allergies, preparation of the food on the menu. Could not get his attention. A large party of 10 was seated and the noise level made it impossible to have a conversation. Got the bill and left ASAP! Not sure I would go back.
Very cute patio area, great for a evening in the summertime. Decent happy hour menu
A pleasant afternoon with a good friend spent in the Blue Door's lovely back terrace.
It was a wonderful meal to celebrate my Birthday!
Loved it. We came for a late Saturday lunch and it was fabulous. Tried the Chicken and Waffles and the friend chicken Benedict and both were excellent.
Bring back the cheddar biscuits!!!
As always the food was excellent as was the service. Our only gripe is that the city was in the midst of a nasty heat and humidity wave and the AC in the restaurant couldn’t keep up.
When we asked if something could be done we were told that the units would start dripping if turned any lower. BDK is basically an old home. With a commercial kitchen kicking out heat, the restaurant was uncomfortable. We might have stayed for dessert had it been a bit cooler.
We will continue to go as we have, but will think twice about doing so when it’s hot.
Looked peaceful online photos a bit cramped and loud when busy. Sat outside where it was much more peaceful however seating uncomfortable. Table needed lowering to match the chairs they were obviously aware of this issue as they retrieved extra cushions from nearby seating. Staff super friendly. No eats for kids.
Great outdoor patio. Service is good. Didn’t have half the menu options available when we went. Food was fair for lunch. Expected better based on reviews.
The outdoor patio and service were fantastic. The food was mediocre.
Not really impressed the food and service was just ok.
Overall, great food but the wait time for the food after ordering was long.
Excellent restaurant .. highly recommended for Brunch or any occasion also... Great Food, atmosphere and service !!!
Love this little restaurant for brunch out on the patio. Thye have the typical brunch fare-eggs benedict, crispy chicken sandwich-didn't see anything sweet but I may have missed it. Ingredients were fresh.
This restaurant is one of my favorite brunch places in Chicago. In particular, having breakfast in its courtyard garden in summer is truly lovely. All dishes there are tasty, but Art Smith's Fried Chicken is outstandingly brilliant; crispy, juicy and perfectly seasoned. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Food is on the healthier side and delicious. Our waitress was very overwhelmed and frazzled. The restaurant is so loud we could barely hear each other.
This has been one of our favorite spots within walking distance for dinners and brunches. We took friends who'd not been and while the fried chicken was terrific (as it always is), the sea bass dish (two orders of it) was quite a disappointment. The fish itself was seriously overcooked and over salted and the rice with apricots that accompanied the fish was almost tasteless and devoid of apricots. The final straw was being informed that they had run out of the bread pudding for dessert! We ate at 7 PM on a Friday night so really unexpected to have run out of a menu staple.
We've come to expect much better from the Blue Door than we go on that occasion.
We were thrilled to start outside on the lovely patio. Unfortunately the rain started before our food came. The restaurant was totally prepared for this possibility and they quickly moved us to inside dining room. Very impressive planning on their part. I do miss a few things that used to be on the menu such a hummus and crackers and salmon. But there were plenty of other selections.
Our first time there. We sat on the patio, which is just beautiful. Dinner was delicious. My only complaint is the Chicago wealthier! Will definitely be back soon!
Food was great, service was not very good. I had a party of 8 that was sat at 7:30 and we didn't receive our main courses until 9:30.
Definitely worth going, especially if you sit out on the patio on a beautiful night. Definitely worth it!
The food is outstanding with great service to match, which makes for an incredible dining experience.
I dined here with my family after a Cirque du Soleil performance. Our waitress was very attentive and accommodating, even offering to swap the type of liquor in a cocktail.
When she noticed that we were roasting, she asked what it was for. At the end of the meal, she brought a slice of cake with a candle in it to help us celebrate a birthday! She also gave us champagne (and Sprite for the kids) so that we could do a proper toast. She mad the experience very special!
The food was simply delicious and very flavorful. Everyone was pleased with their choice. We will definitely return in the very near future.
Sat outside and the smoke from the cigar shop was awful. Great ambiance outside but couldn't get past the smell.
Best fried chicken I’ve ever had. And loved the Salmon. We sat outside and it was perfect.
Delicious food and great service. Beautiful patio.
Love the fried chicken! High Tea cocktail is delicious!
Favorite spot for brunch! Doesn’t disappoint!
Very rude manager. Misled us to think our reservation was for outside when they don't take reservations for the patio.
For a Michelin Star Restaurant, the service was seriously lacking and they were not even busy! They had several servers but it seemed like ours was the only one handling multiple tables and when I asked another for a refill of iced tea she had to go get our server. Maybe some training woe's? Our server was also confused about using the full amount on our gift card, it was a little crazy! The food was good, it was not knee buckling good as I have had elsewhere, but it was good. Don't recommend the Porkbelly appetizer as the two bites were not worth the $15 price tag and it tasted like a bite of pork chop. They also ran out of shrimp for the appetizer? How is that possible on a Friday mid-day when there is a fish monger up the road?
Beautiful inside and out-garden is amazing. Ian was a super host! Have to try the best fried chicken ever!
Love the patio! Great service and what a treat to meet the Chef
We really enjoyed Blue Door Kitchen & Garden. We had dinner in the garden and it was delightful with attentive service and great food. It has a little French garden vibe. Very comfortable. I plan to return!
It was so nice to sit outside! One reason I chose the restaurant was the garden ✅ and the menu!
The menu online was quite different though to the actual menu and there was very little options for vegetarians left! I pointed it out to the waiter and they were very aware that the online menu needed updating!
How hard can it be?
I still had a nice evening because I had nice company and the weather was great!
Always an excellent place for good food and good conversation!
The food was spectacular. The service was a little slow and a few things were delayed getting to the table (pre-dinner cocktails and the wrong dessert initially). However, the pleasant waitstaff and the ambience made up for this. Would definitely recommend.
