BlackSalt Ratings and Reviews
Wonderful service, fabulous food and great ambiance. We came here for our significant anniversary and all was done to the "T". These folks know how to take care of you for that unique occasion in your life. I'd recommend them both hands down. Great place, one that we'll come back many times more!
My wife and I both ordered seafood tacos, and we agreed that they were about B +. I ordered a soup, on the other hand, that was very good.
My wife was ill to her stomach that evening. It may not be fair to blame that on the restaurant, but you have to wonder. Henry Ryan
We've been to Black Salt several times and have very much enjoyed our visit each time. The food is inventive and well prepared. Our waiter, Tom, was engaging and provided helpful dining information. I learned things about the menu that I hadn't known before, in spite of previous visits.
I still love this place. The server was wonderful, top notch, and helped us imagine what we could order off the menu that we really wanted. We picked our fresh fish and the chef cooked it using simple preparation and it was splendid.
It’s my third time here and every time is better than the last.
Wonderful experience celebrating mine and my wife's 5th wedding anniversary. The atmosphere was lively, yet soft enough that we can enjoy each other's conversation. From the moment we sat down to the moment we paid our bill, the service was extremely flawless and impeccable. Our server was attentive and not once was there a delay during each course. The food was phenomenal. My wife and I enjoyed the paddlefish caviar, and the oysters from Washington, Massachusetts and Maine. All were quite exquisite. We also enjoyed the halloumi board as a second course. Our third course featured the NZ John Dory and the big eye tuna, which we both highly recommend. Lastly, we delighted on the chocolate peanut butter crunch cake for dessert. Overall, our dining experience was exceptional and will definitely return in the future. Not to mention the personalized menu they gave us, which we took home!
This is the place to go for fish. It's fresh and they know how to cook it. Salads are inventive. Desserts are good. Excellent wine. It's a bit on the pricy side, but good fish is costly these days even in the grocery store so if you fancy fish it will cost you to get quality.
We meet our French friends for dinner at Black Salt twice a year and always are glad we did. We were once seated in a crowded, noisy back room but this time we were in a booth not as far back. The food was all delicious, especially the grilled Halloumi board we shared, the tuna entrée and the delicious special brownie dessert. My only suggestion is to include a flourless chocolate cake on the regular dessert menu.
We explained clearly to the waiter that we wanted our fish to be grilled without any sauce or any oil due to health reasons. He assured us that they understand and they will give us exactly what we asked for. After a very very long wait, our fish came with a sauce and pretty much with oil all over. When I told the waiter that this was not what we ordered, he said that this is how the chef wanted it and the chef thought that the sauce was needed. He also added that all the oil is just olive oil and not bad for us. I was shocked. There was no apology or offer to replace the food with what we had actually ordered. I was with my guests and didn't want to argue further and make the evening unpleasant for my guests. It is one thing for a restaurant to tell me that they cannot do the food the way I am asking for, it is another thing to say that they can and then bring me something totally different. This was unacceptable and the experience was very unpleasant.
I'd been wanting to get to this restaurant for a long time after many recommendations by friends who'd actually grown up in DC and didn't just go to restaurants they'd read about in a list. The restaurant is small which probably explains why reservation windows tend to be limited, but the menu was great, and it was tough to choose between some of the items on the menu and some of the specials being served that night. Doesn't have to be next week but would definitely like to get back and try some of the other dishes. Great attentive service as well. Well worth the trip and the seafood options were on par with expectations based on the great things I'd heard.
It looks like there have been fairly recent menu changes and the Low Country Seafood Stew is not nearly as tasty as the Seafood Provençal that it replaced. The Day Boat Scallops with gnocchi and crispy kale were excellent, and I love that starters can be ordered as an entree portion.
The service was only fair. There were several miscues. We had asked to have the salads and entrees brought together so that 2 of the guests would not be sitting uncomfortably without any thing while others were having their salads. One steak order was rare rather than medium well. At the end of the luncheon the wait person disappeared for over 15 minutes. The food was good and interesting but for a party of six for lunch a bill with tip of over $230 one might have expected better service and less miscues.
I have been here a few times before and really enjoyed their tasting menu in the past. This time however, the service was poor and the 7 course menu had 2 repeats of the same fish and 2 repeats of the same broth/sauce. This is only acceptable on a tasting menu as part of the same course (something done 2 ways) not as part of separate courses.
The service was also not great. There was no overview of the tasting menu at the start. I indicated one dietary restriction during reservation and of course we were served the item and it has to be sent back.
Also, did not get the sense that the staff really cared about how our experience was going. I may go here again for casual meal but not for special occasion to send over $300 for dinner.
This was truly one of , if not THE best meal i have eaten in a restaurant. and i go to NYC quite often. the presentation, flavors, portions, service, wine ...EVERYTHING!....was exceptional! i would go back there in a minute and will when i come to washington dc. my compliments to the chefs, management, owners and staff for a magnificent dining experience, from start to finish!
