This is the first time I have been to restaurant and I will be back, we enjoyed everything we had from wine to meal and even the caramelised onion butter was delicious. The food was very high standard and delicious. Service was excellent. Our waitresses was friendly and informative.
Can't fault anything about experience. Looking forward to next time.
Pleasant location eating out in the former cloister. Good Sunday lunch, well served with plenty of gravy.
Blackfriars is one of our local favourites. Sunday lunch was nice but I must admit, reluctantly, I have had better meat at other venues. A little fatty for my personal preference.
Delicious food but small portions! Friendly staff.
Lovely warm welcome as usual by the very attentive staff
Celebrating my husbands 70th Birthday
Two glasses of Cava on the house was a unexpected gift
Scallop pie for me and Venison with duck egg starter for husband both a delight
Stuffed noisette of lamb was his choice very tasty
I chose the halibut and was rather disappointed as it seemed to be drowned in the sauce all too rich for me.
I am sure the halibut some broccoli and a drizzle of lemon would have sufficed
Pudding saved the night chocolate mousse for me and vanilla custard tart for the other half.
We love this restaurant and tell our friends it’s the best in town
We will be back on
Delicious food and wonderful service in a beautiful setting
Always great value for money and food tastes wonderful. Very relaxed and lovely surroundings. Great organisation around covid rules and felt completely safe.
Whilst never the cheapest night out you don’t go to worry about how much you pay; you go for the outstanding food, amazing drinks and beautiful setting. Didn’t disappoint, a real treat well worth a visit.
Lovely atmospheric restaurant in beautiful, historic building. Food was delicious and menu was interesting.
Lovely meal although the lobster and crab salad was a bit runny great value for money.
We went to Blackfriars to celebrate a birthday, we arrived only a few minutes late for the 2 4 £12 cocktails, to be told we’d missed out, which was disappointing as we were good customers. The setting and the ambience in the garden was lovely, the waiter was very attentive but not overly so, he brought my partner a complimentary glass of fizz, a nice touch. The table next to us was rowdy, put me in mind of a pub atmosphere, this spoiled it a little, they should’ve been asked to respect other diners. The food - we are both vegetarians - was delicious, a very different, thoughtful and tasty combination of flavours on the plate that complimented each other perfectly - I had smoked cheddar croquets, leek gratin, fried duck egg and barbecued onions and my partner had curried cauliflower fritters, warm coronation style potato salad, toasted seeds & chilli oil, we both had desserts, which again were mouthwatering & delicious.
Great quality food, great choice, exceptional service at great value, highly recommend
Lovely meal in excellent surroundings with very friendly staff
First time I have visited and have to say the best meal I have had in a long time. Flavour combinations were spot on and the service excellent. Would say this is probably the No.1 restaurant in Newcastle for modern classic British food.
I felt we were rushed as table needed two and quarter hours after our booking (6pm). We arrived early and has an aperitif outside, we were told when table was needed by 8.15. My guests arrived, ordered a drink and shortly after it arrived we were asked to go to our table ( perhaps 6.10). Asked about food allergies when ordering and I informed the maitre de that I was gluten free. My starter came with croutons and I asked for them to be omitted, not a problem I was told. All four starters came out at the same time. Mine unfortunately had croutons. I explained and it was taken away. My guests had to start ahead of me as there was a delay while a fresh dish was prepared without the croutons.
These perhaps minor things spoilt the night for me.
Excellent food, very pleasant dining experience, helped by a very warm sunny afternoon.
A lovely venue with excellent service and tasty food.
Really great friendly service, could not go far enough for us. And the food as ever is excellent.
Excellent dining experience. Friendly service, outstanding food and great surroundings
Had lunch in the garden, very pretty & relaxing, starters were ok perhaps a little too much sauce with the lobster & crab cocktail was a bit runny, mains was the confit tomato & basil tart & it was a very dry & hard, had difficulty cutting the pastry, it needed some wetness to it as the crumb was very dry on the top too, maybe a little basil coulis?. Did not have a sweet but they looked delicious. Cote de Provence wine was amazing & service was excellent, overall food could be better & it would have been perfect.
Beautiful food, lovely atmosphere. Ate here twice, once was a Sunday lunch, both times food and service was excellent. Lovely place, highly recommend
As this was our first time at the restaurant it was very nice and friendly. Will definitely be back
Lovely Sunday lunch, beef a bit chewy, chicken was flavoured with herbs which we didn't realise so my young daughter wouldn't eat it.
Really enjoyed our Sunday lunch! The food was amazing, the service impeccable! Always enjoy the overall ambiance at Blackfriars.
Excellent service and food (as usual). This was our first time in a restaurant since last year and we couldn't be happier with the Covid-19 arrangements. The staff were all excellent and so friendly. I hope to book up again soon!
Excellent food and polite service, very enjoyable evening
Outstanding quality of food and lovely atmosphere.
We visited for the second time and it was absolutely fantastic. Great food, friendly staff, awesome restaurant
Visited for afternoon tea. Because the weather was sunny we were sat in the courtyard. It was so picturesque and a wonderful setting for afternoon tea. The food and drinks were fantastic and the service was brilliant, the staff would regularly check if there was anything we needed such as drinks refills, without being too interruptive. We will definitely be going back.
Outstanding food, service & wine. Love being able to let them pair the wine to the food.
We went for a birthday celebration and had a lovely time , relaxing atmosphere, great staff and fabulous food
Excellent setting , food , drinks and ambience . The service was very good and we thoroughly enjoyed our evening with friends having the Early evening Set menu .
The only criticism is the fact that we had to choose both our food and drinks online , paper menus are not being encouraged . Not the easiest and most convivial way to start the evening.
Otherwise , just excellent . We will be back .
The food was gorgeous and the drinks were lovely and the atmosphere is great...all these things were important to us but what really made our Blackfriars dinner so special was the whole way that we were treated. The attention that the staff paid to us was outstanding...they were not fussy and did not try to be our "best mates" but they noticed everything and gave us a very personal and professional service...little things made the difference; knowing who had ordered what drink when they were served, knowing who was the birthday girl in our party without having to ask, displaying a very good knowledge of the menu and drinks so that recommendations were spot on, bringing an extra spoon that was needed without being asked, serving wine with one hand behind the back...little touches of professionalism and care that made all the difference. We came away feeling very well fed and very well looked after. Thank you for a lovely experience.
The food and waiting staff were fantastic but we were a little underwhelmed by the experience as a whole. Given it's at the higher end of the price range and the restaurant' setting and history, we were a little surprised and disappointed by the cheap and very worn looking wobbly furniture. The cutlery had obviously had a hard life too... The kind of flimsy cutlery you'd expect from a service station cafe rather than a top-end restaurant. Plus, the food came out so fast, especially the starter, it does make you wonder how much/if it was made to order and we did feel a little rushed to get in, get fed and get out... But the food was delicious none-the-less.
Lovely birthday meal with the family, the lunch menu is delicious and great value. Highly recommended
Fantastic restaurant. Excellent service.
A peaceful oasis in the centre of the city. Brilliant for a relaxing meal in calm quiet surroundings. This restaurant never fails to produce superb quality food and wine .
An excellent lunch enjoyed by the family. Well prepared and extremally tasty.
