Bateau's selection of steaks are butchered and dry-aged in house and presented on a chalkboard that changes daily. Steaks are butter basted and finished with your choice of finishing butter. Chef Taylor Thornhill also offers a 5 course beef-centric Tasting Menu with optional beverage pairings.
I'd expected outstanding savory selections but the dessert options truly set Bateau apart. If I'd known how unique the menu of finales would be—pea & Pernod sorbet, and a flowering currant ice cream, which I couldn't resist—I'd have saved room to try them all.
The service was OK but no check on the food. Fries were overdone by a great deal and when I mentioned this to server-silence. When I am making a decision to spend 200$/head for a meal I coextensive excellent service and attention to all detail
This place was MOST BEST! We were fortunate to arrive a little early and sit at the bar & talk beef with their in-house butcher. He educated us about some cuts we would not ordinarily try.We tried three steaks. They were all excellent. The other items we were great too.If they need a t-shirt logo it might say:
"Go Beef or Go Home"tm If you do not like beef do not come but if you do it is EXCELLENT!
Outstanding selection. It's fun is try different cuts and "share" them. Didn't have any cuts that were anything but outstanding.
Wonderful service and perfect for a celebration dinner. Food was fantastic
Steaks might be not as you expected sometimes. Take burger!
The tasting menu was really great. The server was really sweet. We added on a steak and that was the best decision ever.
Not cheap but absolutely outstanding meal and service.
Food is fantastic, servers very knowledgeable. We were disappointed with the extra long wait time between our appetizer and dinner.
So first off, the staff contribute hugely to the experience. Our server was amazing. She helped us select steaks from an overwhelming list of ranches let alone cuts. All grass fed and finished. Someone beat me to the “ball round” but the Jacobs ladder was beautifully marbled and cooked to perfection. The starters were all so delicious and thoughtfully prepared. Best meal out in some time.
I love the ambiance at this restaurant. The concept with butcher’s specials means that each time you have a different experience and learn something. If you love the idea of a steakhouse restaurant but detest the dark, ritualized meat presentations and clichéd side dishes then this what to try. Service is superb and the starters (try the tongue) and sides are delicious.
Absolutely exceptional from start to finish. This experience should be at the top of your list whenever possible.
The service here is consistently spectacular, the food is delicious, and the price is a bit high but you're getting what you pay for. The staff has an encyclopedic knowledge of food and wine and the place runs like clockwork. It's my special occasion place and everyone I've taken has been extremely impressed.
Have lived in Seattle for many years and had never been to Bateau. My husband brought me here for my birthday...what a fabulous experience. A very friendly greeting as we arrived with a happy birthday wish, followed by excellent service by our server, Jessica. The food was over the top with the special corn and the heirloom tomato salad as the standouts. A little birthday postcard at the table and a special candle plus bread pudding for dessert was another added surprise. Hats off to Bateau for a job well done!!!
Absolutely incredible experience from start to finish. Tasting menu was beautifully prepared. Jessica provided excellent service. Highly recommend!
Quite possibly the best steak I've ever had. Really good prime cut, excellent cooking/presentation. Side dishes also to die for (summer corn was amazing and mashed are really good French style mash).
Bateau was phenomenal! The beef was excellent, but dare I say that the sides were what I came home raving about?! Get there early to ensure that you get a full choice of what’s on the board in terms of beef, and let your waiter lead the way!
Truly unique dining experience. Highest quality steaks and beef from local farms with knowledgeable staff explaining the differences between all of the cuts.
We were here for my husband’s birthday. Our 11 year old son loved everything we ate especially the beef liver mouse with a plum paste. Highly recommend this place. It’s our favorite Renee Erickson restaurant.
Order the burger! My husband got it for dessert (that’s a first)
Concept restaurant taken too far. The chefs are quite skilled but who wants everything on their plate to taste the same. There is beef in everything (even the desserts) and lots of salt. The steaks are super tender, we did get a free basket of awesome fries (not sure what the mistake was they mentioned). The restaurant is small and looks like a boat. The open window was very nice on a warm night. The sinks in the bathrooms are urinals? Too weird.
The house policies were off putting. We made reservations 3 weeks in advance (they collected a credit card at reservation) and they couldn't put our tables together? We weren't allowed to stand in the bar (which is miniscule). We couldn't be seated until our time. We were told they would take a drink order then they disappeared.
Our server was wonderful, efficient and personal and made the evening much nicer.
Keep your pretense. I won't be back.
Just order the burger. Its the best burger you’ll ever eat.
Birthday. Service was awesome. Our waiter was the best!
Overall a very good experience, and we would happily go back or recommend to others with very deep pockets.
-All the people we spoke to were warm, charming, and seemed genuinely interested in our enjoyment.
-The bartender was great. Entertaining and knowledgable without being in your face about it.
-Food was outstanding. 5 out of 5 on every dish we had.
-Room was cute, love the big windows and the "meat locker".
-Music either wasn't on at all, was too quiet, or was playing brutal techno that didn't match the space
-Arrived an hour early, said we were more than happy to wander the neighbourhood while waiting for our reservation, as the night was amazing. Was told to have a drink at the bar and we could be seated very shortly. 45 mins later... was still at the bar. Would have rather been out walking.
-When ordering a nice bottle of wine and asking for it to be decanted, it should be done tableside, not hidden in a back room. If there isn't room to do so, that is not the patron's fault, but the design of the restaurant.
-While the restaurant look is cute, the overwhelming amount of white made the room feel a little a hospital-esque.
-Incredibly expensive. I understand good meat costs money, but with no prices listed on their website, be aware, this is a $100+ per person for food type of evening.
Overall, a very good meal, that tasted fantastic and was expertly attended to once seated. Bring your 401k and a paintbrush.
Food was AMAZING!! The meat melted in your mouth. It was cooked and seasoned to perfection! Service fabulous! Caitlyn the GM couldn’t have been nicer. Jessica was also great! They both went above and beyond. It was a great atmosphere. You didn’t feel rushed. It was like being at a dinner party in someone’s home.
Amazing service, amazing food. 11/10 would recommend. This restaurant never disappoints.
The 2 of us did the tasting menu and shared a small filet after the 4th course at the server's suggestion. It was a spectacular meal albeit pricey. The service was outstanding, the wine pairings exquisite and the ambience was perfect (we were across from the bar). Did I mention the filet - a steak a do not typically order - was the best ever! Great for special occasion...it was our anniversary...and they acknowledged it several times. Highly recommend!!
For me, Bateau is one of those restaurants that I can visit every once in a while, and know that they’ll always deliver whenever I‘m there; unique menu system, high-quality meal, and great ambience. My last visit (August 20, 2019) was no exception to this.
Food: The food was flavorful. I ordered the 5oz Filet Mignon with some Summer Truffle and Mashed Potatoes on the side. The steak was very tender and tasty, I had to slice it little by little so I could enjoy it slowly. The truffle was also flavorful, and of course, you can never go wrong with the mashed potatoes! I has the delicious Tallow Cake for dessert and a pot of Earl Grey tea to wash all the food down. (Oh and, their plates are a treat to look at)
Price: The pricing for the steak and sides were really reasonable. Pricing for the steak ranged from $25 to around $150, and pricing for the sides ranged from $10 to $20 (depending on the dish). You can definitely find a steak for your desired price point.
Service: The service was on-point. Every time I went to the restroom, the servers would always fold my napkin and place it neatly on the table. They were also very attentive during my meal; the offered me more and asked me how my meal was. The good service definitely adds to the whole experience.
Just like Rolex is known for its watches, or Gucci for its luxury clothes, I now personally associate Bateau with amazing steak & food. I enjoyed my latest visit to Bateau, and I have no doubt I will return there again in the future.
Everything was amazing! Food was outstanding and there is always something new to try with the rotating cuts. Server was very knowledgeable and great with recommendations.
Once the ordering is understood, an exceptional dining experience. We will be back.
We went to Bateau on a recommendation from a friend to celebrate a birthday. It was by far one of the best birthday dinners we have celebrated together. We had a reservation and didn't wait at all. They immediately sat us before we even had a change to take our coats off, which we really appreciated because we were hungry! The staff was super friendly and knowledgeable and helped us with recommendations along the way. We will definitely be returning here in the future!
Beautiful restaurant . A great dining experience , I love their approach to responsibly using the whole animal in their restaurant. Every item we ate was perfectly cooked , they are bold with their flavors and you certainly won’t leave hungry . I will absolutely be back and I would absolutely recommend Bateau to people .
I don’t really understand the hype. Food and service were fine but not outstanding. They already get 20% so they didn’t have to do anything extra and I don’t think they really did.
We really enjoyed our experience at Bateau - it is a unique concept and the meat picking experience was fun! The staff was very attentive and knowledgeable. The food was delicious but we felt there was a lack of fresher items like a salad or other veggies on the menu. The other downside was that the butter placed on the meat really overpowered the taste of the meat. A warning that the butters are pretty strong in flavor would have been appreciated as we would have probably opted to have them on the side.
Fantastic experience. We both had the 8oz fillets and they were phenomenal. As good as any I have had at John Howie, the Met, etc., but the flavor definitely more intense for a fillet due to the French butter basting technique they use to prepare it. service was impeccable as well. Will definitely return. The tables are a bit close together so the staff has to wedge in a bit, but that is hardly an issue. One of my new favs in Seattle and kicking myself for not going earlier. Also learned of a butchering class they offer a few times per year that I will definitely be following up on.
Beautiful space but overpriced for what you get. Service mediocre at best. People were polite but not attentive. Husband did not like the butter that his steak came smothered in and there was no offer to fix the situation (although we were offered a comped dessert). Much better choices in the area.
Outstanding gracilis steak and marrow butter!!! Excellent hostess and waitress! Very enjoyable experience.
They made our Anniversary very special. The tasting menu was delicious and we loved the whole animal approach to cooking. Fantastic!
Mario and the rest of the team are the best. Bateau is consistently a wonderful and delicious experience.
I like the concept of Bateau, but the reality of it wasn’t as enjoyable as I’d hoped. Their steaks are their hallmark, but unless you’re there early, you’re likely to only be left with less desirable cuts at a hefty price point.
While they’ll cook each piece of very high quality meat perfectly, I still find it underwhelming eating cuts like chuck or bavette at the price point that I could get a very nice rib eye steak at elsewhere.
I think my main issue is the value for money and lack of predictability about whether you can get their better cuts. At $106 for a 16oz rib eye, I’m still not sure it beats out some of the other premier steak houses in the city where you don’t have to roll the dice on getting the steak you prefer.
The rest of the food we had was quite good without being exceptional. I will say that their summer truffle scrambled egg didn’t taste very truffly; so that one was a little disappointing.
