The actual restaurant, food, and ambience were exceptional. My only complaint was lack of service and attention, probably secondary to other tables that were on time constraints for a theater show therefore they were concentrating on getting them in and out. Otherwise would highly recommend this restaurant!
Delightful and delicious classic Italian food
To quote my boyfriend, this was the fanciest restaurant we’d ever been to. With that said, it was not the most expensive. Win, win. from the moment we entered the restaurant, when the coat check person took our coats, to the maître d’ bringing us to our table and our team of servers throughout the meal, the entire experience was exceptional. It is worth noting, that this is not your typical Italian restaurant. You won’t find chicken Parm or marsala on this menu. Instead, there is a variety of meat and fish such as roasted salmon with lentils or braised beef in a red wine reduction over polenta. The pre fixe menu was a fantastic value! The espresso chocolate cake (similar to a flourless chocolate cake) was divine. Aesthetically, the restaurant is beautiful. The service was extraordinary. The food was delicious. We can’t wait to go back.
Delicious meal as always. Very good value for the money. We did the Prix Fix menu but were there after the theatre crowd had already left, so it was very quiet and relaxed. WE always try to eat here when we visit NYC.
This is a NY institution. Revisited after many years. It was every bit as good as we remembered it. I had Sea Bass perfectly cooked with seasoned crisped crust, my wife had rack of pork also delicious and well presented.
Food, wine and service were all excellent. Cannot wait to visit again.
The place is what it supposed to be. Very old restaurant. Food is good but plates are very small and a bit pricey for what they are. The restaurant felt a little of a tourist trap. I say this for the fact that is in midtown it didn’t feel as authentic as it thought it would be.
Old word style Italian restaurant, right in heart of theater district. Pre theater menu was perfect and only a short walk to show.
Food was very good and ambiance as well.
We didn’t want to sit by the loud piano so we were moved to a quiet table in the entry and a had a lovely pre theatre dinner. The Pacific bass was perfectly prepared. Can’t wait to return?
We usually love Barbetta but had a bad experience this past Saturday. They seated us upstairs which was a library like ambiance, not nearly as pretty as downstairs. We were seated next to a door and it was cold and drafty. The food was not as hot as usual because it had to be delivered from downstairs. Even though we paid for dessert, it was not served until 7:40pm and we had to leave for an 8:00pm curtain. This was amateurish and made us feel cheated and stressed.
The wait staff were very attentive. We went for Saturday lunch. We were quickly asked if we were planning on seeing a matinee. Our answer was no. We stayed at our table until there were no customers left at the restaurant. The team ensured we enjoyed our stay with zero pressure to leave.
The food was delicious, and the waiters were very attentive. The restaurant seemed crowded so we were a few minutes late arriving at our show. But overall - very good.
Overly pretentious with small portions that were not very good. Out of our three entrees, only the lanb chops were up to standard. Certainly not worth the money.
Too pretentious and overbearing
Food is very good
I had wanted to try this place for a long time and just happened to be in the neighborhood that evening. I got there earlier than my reservation and wasn't sure if they would be able to seat me, but that was not a problem. I walked into the lovely dining room and there were only two occupied tables. It turns out that the room just cleared from everyone that went to the theatre. It was a lovely evening and I'm happy I finally got to dine there.
I was disappointed that it was a pre-set price for menu option which was not clear when we reserved. They let us order a la cart for the kids but it was still SO expensive. So many wait staff standing around and I felt too conspicuous in the big dining room - a bit stuffy - with all elderly people. I love the tradition but I think it needs something fresh to liven it up.
We were looking forward to dining at this restaurant prior to our broadway show. Nice location & seemed charming. I had the mushroom risotto, my husband the sea bass. Both dishes were average. Our waiter was inattentive & a bit curt. restaurant was not busy. We were underwhelmed.
We loved the old-world ambiance and atmosphere of this classic Italian restaurant.
Old world elegance at its finest!!
I used to dine here many times in the past (last time being probably 5 years ago) so I was looking forward to coming here again. Overall - I would recommend this place but only when they are not in pre theatre mode.
The food was very good as always but I was not expecting to only have the pre theatre menu available as this was not mentioned anywhere. From what I was told this is due to the time of the res (6:15pm). They did accommodate a request for an item off the regular menu but we were made to feel like it was a big pain. The service was not like it used to be - ex: I asked 2 different times for a sommelier to come over so that I could get some recommendations for a good bottle of wine and he never came over. Possibly the service was off because others were rushing to get done before the show, not sure. They were good about bringing out a birthday dessert for my girlfriend.
Great dinner before the theater. Eduardo and all of the staff were amazing.
The food was delicious, but the waiters were not friendly at all. I asked for a wine list and received it 10 minutes later, but he never came back to ask what I wanted until the entree came.
We had dinner at Barbetta after seeing a Broadway matinee. Everything was spectacular, from soup to nuts. All four of us found the food, service and ambiance to be superb. I highly recommend this restaurant.
My husband had the pork from the pre theatre menu And had a hard time chewing it I had the chicken and not allot of effort went into presentation and taste. Maybe their regular menu is better but we had the theatre menu and I don’t think I would go back.
This is a classic restaurant. Food was fantastic and service was wonderful. If you LOVE old world charm this is the place for you. Setting is an original "Manhattan mansion" and you feel the history. Pre theatre menu great.
A NYC gem! One of the best restaurants in a city of great restaurants! Consistently excellent food with outstanding service!
Had the scallops. Wow - excellent taste and texture. We shared a appetizer and dessert and still reasonably priced. It was too cold to sit outside but the second floor dining room is lovely.
While the food was good and the ambience was good, when it came time to pay the bill it took forever even though at the beginning of our meal we said that we were on a time schedule to go see a play. I asked for the check three different times and when it finally came I asked for five dollars change and for them to keep the rest. It took 20 minutes to get that five dollars back. This caused us to be late for the show. Every time they had to go into the kitchen for transactions. I think it would be much better if they had their payment equipment outside the kitchen and somewhere convenient.
A quick get together with my best friend from college. I had to find a place you can depend on for fabulous food and great service. Love the attention, and I want to say vintagy atmosphere. Had the fresh mozzarella for a change. Delicious. I can’t believe this restaurant has been open over 100 years, again the vintagy feeling. Great spot.
Ambiente particolarmente datato, avrebbe bisogno di un rifacimento del look . Cibo buono ma quando tornerò a New York non lo sceglierò senz’altro . A questo prezzo questa città offre di meglio
Beautiful and nice location. Wasn’t loud too. Food was ok
Our favorite restaurant
This restaurant is wonderful. The history behind it is so cool and the service is EXCELLENT! They went out of their way to make sure we had a great dinner before the show.
I write this review as a gentle reminder to please polish the rough edges up a bit. I love this place, however it is not cheap, so little things mean a lot.
Our waiter LITERALLY berated a co-worker in front of us and then went on to tell us what a slacker his co-worker was. Inappropriate.
During our meal, a server (or Busboy) LITERALLY whisked away an empty chair from our table. Didn’t ask. Didn’t explain. Just took it and left us with a naked table, with no consideration.
Fish entree, although a nice cut, didn’t seem fresh and smelled fishy.
Half of the pre-dinner entree items had up-charges attached to them. And there was no regular menu offering. Don’t offer a set price and then bait and switch.
You HAD to choose your dessert when you ordered your entree. Sorry, but I would like to decide how to end my meal AFTER I’ve had it, not before.
Most of these issues were small, however our entire party was a bit annoyed by the end of the evening.
Owner/manager: Please do not rest on your history alone. Live up to your glorious reputation and uniqueness. You’ve earned your respect for many years - please do not let it slip away like so many NY icons before...
What a delightful restaurant! Very charming and the food was very good! Definitely want to come back!
In one word, it was Superb! I went with 3 friends before matinee, we all ordered different dishes, we tasted each other’s and all loved everything we had! The Hudson Valley apple dessert was great!!!
The room is lovely. We went for a pre-theater dinner and ordered off the prix fixe menu (though it is not necessary to do that, if you want the regular menu, just ask for it). The food was very good (not great, but we did not expect it to be in pre-theater mode.) We thought the prix fixe menu was a good value at ~ $60 pp for appetizer, main course (some had surcharges), salad, dessert and coffee. The waiters were very efficient, which is comforting when you know you have got to leave at a set time for the theater like everyone else in the place! Yes, it was a little rushed. But that was appropriate and indeed comforting under the circumstances.
The staff went ABOVE AND BEYOND to make the occasion so special. It was our kids (7yo and 10yo) first time in the city, and Barbetta made sure they were given royal treatment. They even brought out free desserts for the kids!! I would definitely recommend this restaurant for the ambiance and service!
Had a great meal. It was relatively quiet for a Wednesday night. The food and staff were outstanding.
Great historic place close to theater district. Excellent food and service
