Barb & Ernie's Old Country Inn
We decided to take in the German buffet on Saturday. The food selection was good, no surprises, tasty but maybe a bit overpriced for the amount of choice available. The biggest problem is the place overall is a bit grimy. The drink menu and condiment bottles on the table were dirty and sticky, as well as the tray they were sitting on. The decor is tired and worn out. I get the current owners are probably trying to maintain the sentimental value that was created by the original Barb and Ernie but the furniture and the space are DONE. Time to renovate!
What a great experience. Great food. Great variety on the buffet (we went on a Friday night) and there wasn't one I tried that I didn't like - no need to add salt or pepper at this place as it's all flavoured great to start with. And to top it off, there were so many choices for dessert that we wished we hadn't eaten so much. Wonderful evening. Will definitely return, but will have to rest my stomach for a month before I stretch it again - so yummy I just couldn't stop eating.
Always great for breakfast
Large group and was pleasantly surprised how quickly and accurately our order came to the table. Lots of service for coffee and anything we needed. Excellent brunch menu and amount of food. Highly recommended!
I always have an amazing time every time I have dinner here. The staff is super friendly, and always joke with us, and the food is consistently delicious! I would highly recommend Barb & Ernies!
We love this place. It is so down-home and the buffet is absoluely yummy - more about quality than quantity.
Very friendly and accommodating staff. Half of our party was late making it to breakfast However; we never felt rushed or as if we were an inconvenience in any way. The food was very good and we all enjoyed ourselves. Will definitely be returning in the future!
Buffet was good. Nice variety. Restaurant could really use some renovations. Getting pretty run down.
The eggs Benedict was amazing! More food than I should’ve eaten. Server also came over with delicious desserts for my birthday!
Been going for over 25 yrs. Owner's are great as well as the food and service. Nice quaint restaurant. German dinner buffets are a must try.
Wonderful Thanksgiving buffet, turkey, all the fixings as well as the usual schnitzel etc! Desserts plentiful, numerous choices and fantastic!
The food is very good and service was excellent! Family friendly atmosphere and lots of food selections to choose from.
Wonderful buffet, great selection, everything was hot, desserts were incredible! Can’t say enough good things about this place!
Great German food. Place could be spruced up a bit but the food is important and it was great.
Barb and Ernies has the best eggs benny in town! Our favorite breakfast spot in the city. Keep up the amazing work guys!
As always, the service was great and the food was exceptional! Go with an appetite because the portions are massive!
Our table for 9 was available as we walked in the door thanks to our Open Table reservation. Service was prompt and accurate as there were several modifications to meals for special diet concerns. Food was plentiful and delicious. Can’t wait to return!
Great service. Great value. Great food. What more do you need?
The Father's Day buffet was served our if the rear furnace room/ mechanical room. The dirty ceiling was exposed and it was very off putting. The food was decent but not spectacular. The staff were fantastic.
Amazing experience. Family friendly. We had such a great time AND the food was awesome! Thank you!!
Barb & Ernie's is famous for their breakfasts but we love going to their German buffet in the evening. It's very good authentic German food. There is always a homemade soup as well as many delicious salads and desserts. It's a bargain at 24.95 per person.
Thomas and Char have outdone themselves with their Father's Day buffet.
Everything was perfect.
When we arrived early we asked if we could enjoy a beer while we waited and sat down with two lagers.
They completely hit the spot.
We then started with an incredible beef soup then the salad bar that always has unique items.
I sampled each of the items in the buffet and (as always) really loved the Rouladin and Schnitle.
The Sauerkraut was made with baby back ribs so it had a little different flavor this time.
Pierogies were great with bacon and sour cream.
Chris had extra space for the desert table so she created over 20 different deserts, each of which were perfectly portioned so one could try a few instead of just one.
We really enjoyed our dinner and highly recommend Barb & Ernies to anyone who loves food food, great service, and wonderful people.
Food had a wonderful homemade taste and comfort. Enjoyed our buffet meal very much. The desserts especially reminded me of my childhood. So good.
The food was good, homstyle cooking in generous portions. Service was friendly. The perfect place for our brunch gathering of 10 people.
Déjà vu experience ... have been to Barb and Ernie’s numerous times since opening - but not in last 15 + yr. Still great food and great hosts.
Thank you Thomas, Chris and Char.
The weekend buffet is just like Christmas dinner at grandma’s house. Absolutely the best home cooking around.
Food/staff fabulous as usual. Family enjoyed it as well.
Great service and great food! We always have fun when we visit.
We were there for a fundraiser, it was our first experience and we came with about 16 family members. We had a buffet. All the food was delicious, full of flavour, good variety and temperature. We were never left standing and waiting for food to be replenished. Desserts were amazing. Highly recommend to all!!
We are from the Spruce Grove area however they are worth the extra drive, we will be back!!!
Great service - super friendly staff! Loved the buffet, great value for the price - includes soup, salad bar, great entree selection and dessert bar.
Took my husband out for birthday dinner - had the buffet on a very slow night (major snowstorm) so the food wasn't as good as it could have been but there was lots of it and a good variety. Managed to spend time having a nice chat with the owner (I think) who was very friendly and nice.
We had the supper buffet on a Saturday. They were very busy and had some large tables so it was quite loud and the place isn't very big. The buffet was quite good if you like German food or a change from the usual and great value for your money!! I really enjoyed most of the food and the desserts were awesome!!! I would go again, maybe not right away but down the road a bit.
The staff were amazing at accommodating our large group. I was hesitant to book a group of 19 for dinner, but they were definitely prepared to host us, and went above and beyond to keep us happy. Drinks filled, menu questions answered, dessert recommendations, you name it. Can't wait to go back.
We booked for a group pre-Christmas brunch, and as always, it was a good solid choice. Prices are reasonable, good solid homestyle food, killer schnitzel, served in abundance. The place is always full, and we still didn't feel rushed, staff is friendly amd great service.
Only downside was our table was directly in line with entrance door, amd got pretty chilly at the end of table closest to the door with people going in and out.
We had a great time and was absolutely fantastic to find a place open to reservations even though they are always busy.
No issues ever recommending this restaurant for good, abundant homstyle german food, and menu has lots of choices.
Outstanding service and food was great! Had a party of 18 for a Christmas breakfast. Had our own room, decorated table with Christmas napkins. Chris our server was excellent, ensured we had everything we needed and some! We will be back for sure!
Thanks so much Chris!!
Nice family get together to celebrate a birthday. Long time since we had been and it hasn’t changed a bit. FANTASTIC!!!!
The starter soup was yummy. Although there wasn't a huge selection in the buffet, it was delicious and totally satisfying! The corn pudding was oh so yummy!!! It was my choice for dessert . The salad bar and dessert bar were great too, root beer cheesecake that really tasted like root beer! We all left quite happy!
We arrived late in the evening for the buffet. The only reason it didn't get five stars was the snitzel was tough. Borsch soup was great. Lots of choices for dessert. The rest of the main course choices were all good- I tried them all.
We will return
I am so glad we made reservations as this place was hoppin' on a Sunday morning and we were a party of 9. Unusual breakfast choices with a distinctly German flair. The kids loved the pancakes, Bratwurst sausage and the eggs Bennie combos. The schnitzel was a bit too thick for my mother but she likes it done with veal and pounded till it was nearly see-through before frying. (and served with lemon). Overall though, good service, cozy atmosphere and great portion sizes. We will be back!
A charming touch of German quinine, brought back many memories of my time in Lahr, Germany
