Food was really tasty - classic dishes with a twist. Didn’t much care for the shrimp ceviche - a little too raw but nicely plated. We’re big fans - always look forward to a meal here.
Perfect Valentine’s Day Dinner. Service was terrific as usual; enjoyed seeing the new wine store as well!

I am a huge fan of this restaurant and have eaten here many times since it’s opening.
I’m just thinking they cannot handle the demand of a day like Valentines Day as the meal was surprisingly not well executed. The service was attentive and the hostess was gracious and helpful. This low review only reflects our experience with the food. We came to this restaurant for the food.
To begin, the wine selection was delicious and we enjoyed the options. We chose the Dinner for Two option, a prix fixe menu. The appetizers were a little salty, but we stayed in it and were excited to try our Lobster and Seafood Paella.
When it arrived, the presentation was beautiful but the dish itself was very dry and lacked flavor.
We were shy to send it back, but considering the $100 price tag we opted to see if we just ordered the wrong item and kindly asked the waitress if we could switch it for something else. She was incredibly gracious.
I opted for the pork shoulder and my husband chose the NY strip.
My dish was delicious and flavorful, a thoughtful play on Mexican carnitas with Chile verde salsa using the flavors of polenta to replace the tortilla.
My husband’s dish was ice cold. The mashed potatoes must have been pre-cooked because they had a brown crisp on top however when you bit into them they were ice cold, the baby carrots were also cold. Both also tasted like freezer burn. We were surprised. Rather than send the dish back a second time, we decided to ask for the check and end the meal. There were others waiting and we reasoned that on Valentine’s Day many people come for ambiance, and the restaurant offered intimacy and atmosphere. AltaEats has this and on a regular day, it also has a deliciously prepared menu.
My wife and I had a strange and very disappointing experience a few days ago. The food was okay (overpriced, but okay; we thought the $17 for a glass of wine was ridiculous; needless to say, we passed). The $19 hamburgers were good, but . . . not that good.
The service was terrible and strange at the same time. The server who brought our appetizer spilled the sauce all over the table, and acted like nothing had happened. Then, halfway through our entree, she brought a basket of bread, for which we were charged. We didn't ask for it, and certainly didn't want it AFTER our appetizer and toward the end of the meal.
We didn't criticize any of this, but it was poor service for the price, and we won't be coming back.
The flavor profiles of each dish we ordered was spectacular. I'm sure the dishes change with some frequency, but the lamb we had was excellent, as was the cauliflower. Highly recommend.
Best dish was a Cauliflower appetizer with a peanut sauce and raisins. Arugula and Gem salads good; certainly not the best we have tasted. Very disappointing entrees. Milanese chicken breast and Australian Sea Bass was dry and tasteless. Desert Panna Cotta fair. We have dined here 4 previous times; also mixed results
I specifically asked for the green pepper sauce that came with the steak to go with the left over steak. Got home, no sauce!
The food was great. However, the two waitresses were unfriendly.
First, the hostess ushered us in and told us that if we wanted to know what the specials are, we had to squeeze our way through the crowded room(after being seated) to read the specials on a chalkboard by the cook area.
Later, we saw the witness give the table next to us a beautiful description of the specials after they arrived.
The waitress was ok and apologetic-
Took forever and they took our bread plate while we were still eating the bread and butter, which I think is not free on the menu.
My partner ordered the ribeye-the cut served him was inferior meat-and his Side of mashed potatoes was cold. My lamb was cold and when I sent it back, it returned overcooked. The food had clearly been sitting on the counter for pick up for some time.
We skipped dessert, warning to get out of there. They apologized and comp’d our glasses of wine, but quite frankly this is the second time I’ve had meh to worse food there, and we kept saying was “we should have just driven the distance to Repulique.”
Since we are in the restaurant's neighborhood, we usually recommend it to our neighbors.
Love this neighborhood gem. Creative food which is yummy, attentive service, and the owner Paul is always accessible. Love the center table - gives a great opportunity to talk to those sitting next to us.

This is my 3rd time dining at Alta Eats, and this time it was not as good as the previous times. The service was excellent. We were waited on hand and foot with attention, prompt responses to our requests and with humor, smiles and professionalism. We had a group of 6, so we kept the waitress and the hostess busy and they were GREAT!!!
However, the food this time was disappointing. My chicken melanaise was dried out, overcooked and over breaded. My mashed potatoes were cold. I was disappointed. Other meals at the table were good. The salmon, burgers and vegetarian plate were good. Perhaps it was an off night. I would still go back and still recommend it to others.
We’ve done a number of special occasion meals at Alta Eats and they never disappoint. The service is terrific, the food is always great, and it feels like a special place and home at the same time. What a great experience! Thank you!
It was the first time that we had been there. We have heard good things and finally went. We stopped off at the liquor store next door and picked up a bottle of wine. No corkage if you bring in from there, great price and larger selection. We enjoyed the menu options and the salads we're fresh and not overly dressed. The steak was cooked just to perfection.

We were in town for the Breeders Cup and a friend at the races recommended Altaeats after dining there the night before. My dad doesn’t drink and ordered a Coke, which they didn’t have, but it was sweet that one of the servers ran across the street to get him one. That really is going the extra mile. We ordered the olive starter, the cauliflower starter and the wedge salad. Probably should have served them in that order dish-wise, I thought it was a little strange the salad came before the cauliflower but that is an extremely minor point as all the dishes were excellent and the service was great. My dad had the ribeye and I was caught between the opah or the pork chop, ordering the latter with the server’s recommendation and was not disappointed. Both dishes were excellent and I enjoyed my Pinot Noir and the evening in general. It’s a little tricky to find in the dark at night with no signage other than a welcome mat out front and you wouldn’t think that nice a restaurant would be located between a barber shop and a liquor store but it’s a hidden gem and highly recommended to others looking for a fine dining spot.

Amazingly wide selection of creative menu items for a small restaurant! Salad of arugula & strawberries was a terrific combination. Opakapaka baked tended to be unfortunately dry even though accompanying rice & asparagus were perfect. Apple tart another winner!

We had an early reservation, but had to wait 30 minutes or so for our meal--rack of lamb and duck. The lamb was less tasty than what my wife has had before. I tasted it and agree. The duck was tasty but such a tiny amount. The service was noticably lacking compared to previous visits. It looked as if the staff was overwhelmed by some large groups.
The fish was dry and the scallops salty , the rice was mistaken by pilaf and I just got jasmine rice

Our favorite local restaurant and doesn't involve driving into Pasadena. This a curve ball on fine dining with a more casual approach and atmosphere, yet owner Chef Paul uses only the freshest and best of ingredients. Jessica, our server is always outstanding and attentive. Tommy and Eric in the kitchen are fantastic chefs, plus Chef Paul consistently hits it out of the park. My rib-eye was perfectly rare, as per cooked to order. The scallops in mushroom risotto was a table favorite. Try the roasted cauliflower with peanut sauce and sexy Moroccan spices or simple French fries with house-made ketchup for a start. You can't go wrong with Chef Paul's house baked bread hot out of the oven. Reasonably priced wine list, or you can purchase a bottle or two of fine selections next door at his wine shop (and unique liquors), Altadena Beverage. Corkage fee is waived. Another must try is Chef Paul's mystery wine. The wines are covered and you simply choose a bottle for a fixed price. More often then not, you'll receive a bottle that far exceeds the selling price. A fun idea for wine selection! Don't forget to indulge in dessert, we had the apple turnover in a flaky crust oozing with a fresh, hot apple interior. An intimate place, perfect for small and larger-ish parties. Highly recommend this one of a kind hide-away tucked into Altadena.
Such a weird experience. The storefront is dark and unmarked, like an abandoned private detective office from the 1950's. Inside, fairly lively but no colors unless you like industrial green. Our greeter pointed us to our table. Service started out fine, but $3 for bread and butter. How European. A group of six was next to us, and most had ordered the rack of lamb, and their plates were clean. Easy choice! Our starters eventually came. No worries. We can be European, take our time and "dine" instead of "eat". But then the entrees arrived. Something that was not Rack of Lamb was placed in front of me, by the greeter. "We were out of the Rack so we're substituting with Lamb Porterhouse", I was told. "Your waitress should have told you". Well, no one did tell me, or give me the opportunity to ask more or change my mind. (And they never made the change on the blackboard). Since she made it sound like a better deal, I accepted, also because I knew my husband would wait for me to get my food and we did not wish to keep waiting. The "Lamb Porterhouse" was just ok. Not very tender, as if they had known far enough in advance they would be serving it, they might have prepared it differently. The couscous and butternut squash were also dry and nothing special. My husband enjoyed his $19 burger as much as he enjoys most burgers, ie nothing special.
As I was eating my meal, I was wondering if we should continue in the European spirit and not leave a tip. But then the greeter returned, and offered to comp my meal. Saved themselves a star.
The was seasoned well and not at all over salted. The warm olive tapenade was matched to crisp toasted baguette.The scallops were exquisite.
Altaeats is wonderful. I love their rotating menu and their vegetables are delicious. I think they have the best burger in LA- it is waygu beef and they are always changing it up. The only restaurant for foodie americanish/fusion food that I would compare it to around here is Union, but Altaeats has better value.
We dined at Altaeats this past Saturday night. We've eaten there easily a half dozen times, taken friends and always enjoyed our meal there. This time the though the kitchen had an off night. Maybe I should have know it wasn't going to go well when the good bottle of wine I brought was corked.... We split an appetizer (bacon wrapped dates, yummy as usual) and a salad, also delish. We ordered the rack of lamb & ribeye. Neither had any flavor - it was as if the kitchen forgot to season anything, including the sides. While both were cooked to an acceptable level of doneness, the steak had an odd consistency & no flavor. None. The mashed potatoes almost seemed like they were made from reconstituted potatoes. It had gotten busy, so we were pretty much through what we were going to eat before the service person stopped by to ask how the meal was - she could tell immediately from our look & amount of food still on the plates we hadn't enjoyed it. To their credit they immediately took both entrees off the tab, (which we didn't ask for). Even if they hadn't, we'll go back again, this is a neighborhood gem so hopefully this was a 1-off experience.
I've been to AltaEats twice and both times I'm hoping for a chance to come back soon. The food was fantistic. Our waiter, Connie took excellent care of us. If you can find it (part of the charm) go to AltaEats!
