About this restaurant

  • Hot spot
  • Neighbourhood gem
  • Lively
In Italian, Acquolina means “mouthwatering” – illustrating what happens when you see a delicious, inviting dish. This phenomenon can only happen when food is made with passion and love. For us, food “is a social matter. ” In turn, Acquolina weds a passion for food with a real respect for the community in which it stands – welcoming a mix of locals and visitors, singles and families, welcoming guests of all ages and lifestyles.

At Acquolina, we endeavor to create a vibrant and lively atmosphere where our patrons can revel in the experience of an authentic and “regional” Italian meal. The Tuscan-infused menu is meant to pair with an assortment of wines, with samplings from Italy and California. In the spirit of the Tuscan Trattoria, everything is meant to be authentic – the pasta boiler and the pizza oven came direct from Italy, brought here to guarantee a perfect plate of “al dente” pasta and a perfect slice of thin crust pizza.

If you love cheese, you need to try cheese wheel pasta in SF. We got the cacio e pepe and this was such a fun experience seeing them make the pasta in front of you. Customize it by letting the chef know how much cheese and pepper you want. If you post about this experience on your instagram they will also give you a free dessert. Check them out! @acquolinasf

Review summary

Acquolina offers an "attentive service" and delightful appetizers, making it ideal for an enjoyable night out. During SF Restaurant Week, it stands out for "great value" with live cooking shows. The cheese wheel pasta is a unique experience, and the Etna Rosso wine pairs beautifully with the meal.

Very good experience! Especially during restaurant week, great value! Love the cooking demonstration! The food quality is very high! Parked at the north beach garage on Vallejo and I recommend that too. If you miss living in San Francisco or and want your favorite meal from Italy I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

We visited during SF Restaurant Week. I’ve been wanting to try the “cheese wheel” pasta experience so I ordered the Spaghetti Parmigiano, Funghi & Tartufo (bad choice - the “funghi” was canned). After removing the canned mushrooms, I was able to doctor the pasta - I added more parm and finally added salt to salvage my main - sadly, the spaghetti was overcooked. Boo. In hindsight, I should have ordered the Spaghetti Cacio & Pepe but I really was surprised that canned mushrooms were used in a meal. At a restaurant. On the green. Given it’s SF Restaurant Week, I do feel you’re getting more bang for your buck for a 3-course meal at $45 + $15 up charge for the Live Cooking Show “experience”, a very good Burrata appetizer, and a pleasant tiramisu dessert. My partner’s main Pennette Al Pesto was good - a bit heavy on the garlic, but where my pasta was bland, his was overly flavorful. And the Penne was cooked exactly right! His Frittura Calamari E Gamberi appetizer was lightly breaded and seasoned! My favorite dish of the night :) Overall, the Service was attentive. The Appetizers were better than expected! And sharing a bottle of Etna Rosso with my partner in crime, our date night turned out very enjoyable.

I have been here a few times. Our food this weekend was absolutely terrible. My husband’s calzone was so doughy and my pasta and my daughter in laws pasta was now fully cooked. The appetizers and service was amazing.

First time at the restaurant and I enjoy the service. I got the tableside pasta cheese wheel and it was so delicious. Only thing I would comment is that we got our pasta and pizza a little bit longer had to wait but once we got the food, it was worth it.

The pasta di bascailo was horrid. Looked like it was cooked well before the other dishes. Dried up, tasteless and a sauce like paste. Amateurish presentation.

Right when we got there in the entrance, we had to quickly dodge one of the waiters who was reaching for something near the door and wasn't very nice when asking us to move. It took a while for water to arrive at our table and even longer for someone to wait on us. When the food got there it was very average.
